If you want an app gone, try Start > All apps, right-click the app, and select Uninstall. You can also use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the app’s More menu, and choose Uninstall. If you only want to stop an app opening when you sign in, leave it installed and turn it off under Settings > Apps > Startup or in Task Manager’s Startup apps list.

Uninstalling and disabling startup are different: one removes the app through its supported removal process; the other leaves it on your PC but stops its automatic launch. Some built-in apps cannot be uninstalled, and available controls vary by app and Windows configuration. Start with the least disruptive option that meets your goal, and avoid forcing removal of an unfamiliar component.

Choose between uninstalling an app and disabling its startup

Start by deciding what you want to change. If you no longer need the app, use its uninstall option. If you still use it but do not want it to open automatically when you sign in, disable its startup entry instead. That leaves the app installed and available to launch manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These actions solve different problems. Turning off startup is a focused change to automatic launch; it does not remove the app. Uninstalling runs the app’s supported removal process, but it does not necessarily address a security problem or fix another Windows issue. Choose based on the actual problem rather than assuming every app that opens at sign-in should be deleted.

Before removing anything, check whether you rely on it for a device, work task, accessibility feature, or another app. There is no universal list of apps that are safe to remove from every Windows 11 PC: what matters depends on your device and how you use it. If you do not recognize an entry or cannot tell what depends on it, do not force its removal or delete related files.

Your situation First choice What it changes Limit to know

Microsoft’s Windows 11 support instructions describe Start and Settings as normal uninstall routes, Control Panel as a fallback for some programs, and Settings or Task Manager as ways to manage startup apps. The exact labels and available actions can vary by app and device configuration, so use the controls shown on your PC rather than expecting every app to have the same menu.

Uninstall a regular app from Start or Settings

Use the Start menu

  1. Open Start and select All apps.
  2. Find the app, right-click it, and select Uninstall.
  3. Follow any on-screen instructions from Windows or the app’s uninstaller.

If the menu does not offer Uninstall, or the removal does not complete, try the Settings route or the Control Panel fallback below. The Start menu is a convenient first check, but an app’s presence in the menu does not guarantee that every Windows 11 device will offer the same removal option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Installed apps in Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app. If the list is long, use its search field when available.
  3. Select the app’s More menu, then choose Uninstall.
  4. Follow the prompts. If the app asks you to confirm, make sure you have selected the intended app before continuing.

Check the app name before confirming, especially if several entries have similar names. If the app presents its own uninstaller, follow its instructions rather than closing it partway through. When the process finishes, return to Installed apps and check whether the app still appears or whether Windows shows another available action.

The list and available actions depend on the app. Microsoft notes that some apps cannot currently be uninstalled from Settings, and some built-in apps cannot be removed. If there is no uninstall action, that does not necessarily mean Windows is malfunctioning. It can simply be a limit of that app’s supported removal options.

Use Control Panel when Settings does not offer removal

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the desktop program and choose its uninstall option, then follow the program’s instructions.

This fallback is for programs that expose an uninstall flow there. Store apps and other app types may not appear in Programs and Features, so an empty result is not proof that the app is removable by another method. It also does not mean you should start deleting folders or registry entries to finish the job.

In practical terms, try the supported route that matches what Windows offers: Start or Settings first, then Control Panel for a desktop program if Settings has no uninstall action. If none of those places offers removal, there is no universal supported force-removal method established for every app. It is safer to leave the app in place than to remove a component you cannot identify.

Stop an app from launching at sign-in without removing it

Turn it off in Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Find the app and switch it off.

This changes whether the app starts automatically; it does not uninstall the app. You can still open it yourself when you need it. This is often the appropriate first step when the complaint is only that an app appears after sign-in, rather than that the app itself is unwanted.

Disable it in Task Manager

  1. Open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
  2. Select the app you want to stop from launching.
  3. Choose Disable.

Task Manager includes startup-impact information for listed entries. Use it to inspect an app’s reported impact, but do not treat that label as a guaranteed measure of how much faster your particular PC will start. Startup impact and performance improvements are not quantified for an individual PC. Turning off an entry may be useful if you do not want the app to launch at sign-in, but Windows support guidance does not promise a particular startup-time or performance gain.

Before switching off an entry, consider whether you expect that app to be ready immediately after sign-in. If it is something you use, the consequence of disabling startup is that you will need to open it yourself when needed. The setting leaves the app installed, so you can turn its startup entry back on if you change your mind.

If the app is missing from the startup list

Some apps start through shortcuts in a Startup folder rather than an entry shown in the Settings or Task Manager lists. Microsoft’s startup guidance describes checking the current-user or all-users Startup folder for shortcuts. Remove only a shortcut you recognize and can identify as belonging to the app you intend to stop. If you cannot identify a shortcut confidently, leave it rather than deleting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registry entries can also control startup behavior, but editing the registry is not a good first step for routine cleanup. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences. If you cannot identify a startup item confidently, leave it alone rather than deleting an unfamiliar entry. For the ordinary goal of stopping an app from opening at sign-in, use Settings or Task Manager first.

Repair an app you want to keep

If an app is malfunctioning but you still need it, try its repair options before uninstalling it. Some apps provide these controls at Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options. Repair and Reset are not the same as disabling startup: they are troubleshooting choices for an app that should remain installed.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and locate the app.
  2. Open its More menu, then select Advanced options if that option appears.
  3. Choose Repair first, if available, and check whether the problem is resolved.
  4. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, consider Reset if offered. Read any on-screen explanation before confirming, because the available effects can vary by app.

Not all apps provide Advanced options, Repair, or Reset. If you do not see them, use the app’s own supported help or uninstall flow rather than assuming the controls are hidden in another Windows menu. If the app is a desktop program and its controls differ from a Microsoft Store app, follow the route Windows presents for that app type.

Repair is the more conservative first try in this sequence. Reset is a further option only when it is available and you are comfortable proceeding after reading the explanation shown on screen. Do not assume that every app’s Reset command behaves identically; Microsoft’s instructions make clear that options vary by app.

Troubleshoot an uninstall that fails

For a failed uninstall, work through simpler steps before considering a major Windows recovery action. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting, trying Repair or Reset when those options are available, using Settings to uninstall, and following Windows troubleshooting prompts.

  1. Restart the PC. Then try the app’s uninstall flow again.
  2. Try Repair or Reset, if offered. The controls are under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options; use Repair before Reset.
  3. Try the supported uninstall route. Use Start or Installed apps in Settings, then try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for a desktop program if Settings has no uninstall action.
  4. Follow the relevant Windows prompts. App type matters: desktop programs and Microsoft Store apps may have different troubleshooting paths.

Keep the steps in proportion to the problem. If a restart or supported uninstall route resolves it, there is no need to move on to a more disruptive recovery option. If Windows displays a troubleshooting prompt, follow the prompt relevant to the app and the problem rather than assuming that every failure has the same cause.

Do not jump straight to Reset this PC for one app that will not uninstall. Microsoft presents that as a later option after simpler troubleshooting steps fail, not as the normal first response to an app-removal problem. An app-specific uninstall issue should first be handled through the app’s supported controls and the applicable Windows troubleshooting path.

Handle suspected malware as a security problem

If you think an app is malicious, do not rely on uninstalling it as the only response. Use Windows Security or another security tool to scan for and address threats, and follow the security tool’s cleanup guidance. Removing an entry from Installed apps or disabling startup does not establish that a threat has been fully cleaned up.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters because ordinary app management answers whether an app should remain installed or launch at sign-in; a security scan addresses whether there is a threat. Do not treat an unfamiliar name alone as proof that something is malware, and do not treat a successful uninstall as proof that a suspected threat has been fully handled.

If you are unsure whether an entry is malicious or a component you need, avoid deleting unfamiliar files or making registry changes. Use the security tool’s findings and supported remediation steps to decide what to do next.

Why an app may not be removable

  • It is built into Windows. Microsoft says some built-in apps cannot be uninstalled.
  • Settings does not support removing that app. Some apps are not currently removable from Settings; a desktop program may instead have an uninstall flow in Control Panel.
  • The app type uses a different route. Not every app appears in Programs and Features, and desktop programs and Store apps can have separate troubleshooting paths.
  • The available controls vary. Windows labels and app options can change with updates and differ by app or device configuration.

Use the supported option actually shown for the app. If Windows offers no uninstall command in Start or Settings and the app does not appear in Control Panel, the available guidance does not establish a safe universal method to force-remove it. That is a reason to stop and identify the app or seek help through its supported route, not a reason to guess at hidden removal commands.

There is no app-by-app removability list that applies to every Windows 11 device. A choice shown on one PC may not be shown on another, and the app type can affect which removal route is available. Check the Installed apps list and use the controls presented for your own device.

What to expect after cleanup

Disabling startup prevents that entry from launching automatically; it does not remove the app or its files. Uninstalling follows the app’s removal process, but no general storage amount or startup-time improvement can be promised: neither is established for an individual PC by Microsoft’s Windows guidance. Check the result against your original goal—whether that was to keep the app but stop auto-launch, fix a malfunction, remove a program, or investigate a security concern.

Windows 11 labels and controls can change with updates, and options vary by app type and device configuration. If a menu item described here is missing, use the available supported route for that app rather than assuming your PC is broken. The procedures here reflect Microsoft support instructions checked on October 13, 2026.

What should I do if Settings has no Uninstall button?

First check whether the app offers Uninstall from Start. For a desktop program, try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. If no supported route offers removal, do not force-delete unfamiliar files or registry entries.

Should I disable startup or uninstall the app?

Disable startup if you still want the app but do not want it to launch automatically at sign-in. Uninstall it if you no longer want it installed and Windows offers a supported removal option.

Will disabling startup make my PC start faster?

Task Manager shows startup-impact information for listed entries, but Microsoft’s guidance does not quantify a speed improvement for an individual PC. Disabling startup stops that entry from launching automatically; it does not guarantee a particular performance change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if an app is malfunctioning but I want to keep it?

Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options. If offered, try Repair first; consider Reset only if needed and after reading the on-screen explanation. Not every app has these options.

Is uninstalling enough if I suspect an app is malware?

No. Scan with Windows Security or another security tool and follow its cleanup guidance. Uninstalling an app or disabling its startup entry is not a substitute for a malware scan.

The Bottom Line

Use Start or Settings to uninstall an app you no longer want, Control Panel as a fallback for some desktop programs, and Settings or Task Manager to disable an app you want to keep but stop from launching at sign-in. If the app is broken, try Repair before Reset when those options are available; if you suspect malware, scan with a security tool. When Windows offers no supported removal option, do not force-delete an unfamiliar component.
