To remove Gears of War: E-Day mods safely, first undo the installation with the same mod manager or the mod creator’s removal instructions. Back up saves and any files you deliberately edited. Then use your PC storefront’s repair or file-verification feature. In the Xbox app for PC, the documented route is My Library > E-Day > … > Manage > Files > Verify and Repair; the Xbox warning says that mods and saves without a backup will not be retained. Reports about E-Day mods include character-model replacements and, in a more recent report, HUD and performance-related modifications. Those reports describe PC activity; they do not establish an official removal method for every mod. Performance claims in those reports were not independently tested, so restoring the unmodified game is the only dependable way to compare behavior.
Back up saves and intentional changes first
Make a separate copy before using any repair command. Save the copy somewhere outside the game’s installation directory, such as an external drive or a clearly named folder in your Documents directory. If you use cloud synchronization, still make a local copy: cloud behavior can vary, and a repair operation may replace local data before synchronization finishes.

What to preserve
- Campaign and settings saves, if you can identify them through the game or your storefront’s save-management tools.
- Any configuration, accessibility, controller, or graphics files you intentionally edited.
- Mod-manager profiles, load orders, and downloaded archives if you may want to reinstall later.
- A note listing the mods, versions, and installation method. This is especially useful when you need support.
Do not assume that a file is safe to remove merely because its name contains “mod.” Some games store saves, screenshots, caches, or configuration data beside installed content. E-Day’s authoritative per-file mod map was not established in the available official material, so preserve uncertain files rather than guessing.
Remove a mod through its manager or installer
Recommended sequence for a manager
- Exit E-Day and close the mod manager. If the manager has a deployment or virtual-file mode, stop deployment first.
- Open the manager’s profile for E-Day and record which mods are enabled.
- Use the manager’s Disable, Remove, or Uninstall action for each mod. Use the manager’s own wording; do not substitute a file deletion.
- If the manager offers a “restore,” “undeploy,” or “clean” operation, run it after removing the mod. Read its confirmation dialog for any save or configuration warning.
- Launch the game once without reinstalling anything. Check the title screen, characters, HUD, and settings for obvious signs that the modification is still active.
If the game starts normally and the manager reports a clean or undeployed profile, you can proceed to normal play. If visual changes remain, do not keep deleting random files. The mod may have overwritten an original asset, or another enabled profile may still be active; return to the manager’s profile and creator instructions.
Recommended sequence for an installer
Use the installer’s uninstall entry if one exists. Some installers place an uninstaller in the same package or in the operating system’s installed-app list. If neither exists, follow the creator’s documented reversal steps. Keep the backup you made until you have completed a successful launch and confirmed that your saves load.

Bethesda Support documents a general Xbox app for PC repair flow. It is storefront guidance, not an E-Day-specific, tested recipe, but it is the concrete procedure available for the Xbox app.

- Open the Xbox app on Windows and select My Library.
- Select Gears of War: E-Day.
- Open the game’s … menu and choose Manage.
- Open the Files tab.
- Select Verify and Repair.
- Read the warning and continue only after your saves and wanted files are backed up.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game from the Xbox app.
The warning reproduced in the Bethesda Support instructions states: “You will then receive a pop-up warning that you will not retain any mods or game saves that are not backed up.” Treat that as a destructive possibility, not as a routine informational message. A repair can restore files managed by the storefront, but it does not give you an official list of every file a particular E-Day mod may have added or changed. If a mod used files outside the managed installation, those files may require the creator’s cleanup procedure or help from official support.
What to check after Xbox repair
- Start E-Day before copying any backed-up configuration or save files back.
- Confirm that the modified character model, HUD change, or other visible alteration is gone.
- Check that the game reaches the main menu and that a new or known-good save can be created.
- Close the game, then restore backed-up saves selectively. Keep the untouched backup until you have confirmed that the restored data works.
If Verify and Repair reports an error, stops repeatedly, or leaves the same modification in place, do not escalate by deleting directories whose location has not been verified. Record the exact message and use the official Gears support route.
Steam: verify from the live client, not from a copied path
Steam provides a game-specific technical-support entry point for E-Day. However, the available E-Day support result does not publish a detailed file-verification sequence, and Steam’s menu labels can change. Use the current client’s own instructions rather than treating a third-party guide for another game as authoritative.
- Back up saves and note your installed mods, as described above.
- Open Steam’s Library and select E-Day.

If the game still shows a replacement model or altered HUD afterward, return to the mod manager or creator’s instructions and then contact E-Day’s technical support rather than guessing at folders.

Restoring a manual installation without destroying the wrong files
Manual modding is the situation in which indiscriminate deletion causes the most damage. The available official material does not establish E-Day’s mod directory names, file extensions, or a complete list of files that a mod may replace. Do not transplant paths from another Gears title or from an unofficial “cleaner” script unless the E-Day mod author or official support specifically confirms them.
If the creator documents a file list
- Close E-Day and make the backup described earlier.
- Compare the documented file list with your installation. Move matching mod files to a quarantine folder outside the game directory instead of permanently deleting them.

Avoid posting personal save files or account credentials.

After repair: prove that the original game is back
Run a clean first launch
Start E-Day with the mod manager closed or its E-Day profile disabled. Check one area affected by the mod, such as a character model or HUD element, and then open the settings you changed. Do not reinstall a mod while diagnosing a repair result; changing several variables at once makes the cause impossible to isolate.

Only restore the backed-up saves after the repaired installation reaches the menu and can create or load a test save. If a restored save causes a crash or missing-content message, remove that restored copy and contact support with the save’s provenance. Keep the original backup untouched.

Update only after the baseline works
Once the clean installation launches, allow the storefront to finish pending game updates and restart the client if requested. Test again before enabling any mod. A game update can make an older mod incompatible, so reinstalling immediately can recreate the problem you were trying to remove.

The mod is still visible after verification
Confirm that the correct storefront installation was repaired and that the mod manager has no active E-Day profile. If the mod was a manual replacement or added files outside the storefront’s managed set, verification may not identify every change. Use the creator’s removal instructions or official support; do not search-and-delete by filename alone.
The game will not launch after removal
Close the storefront and restart Windows, then run the same verification or repair operation once more. If the failure persists, note the error text, the storefront, the mod-removal method, and whether the failure began before or after restoring saves. Send those details through the official Gears support route. Do not download replacement DLLs or executables from an unverified source.

Saves appear to be missing
Stop launching repeatedly if you are unsure whether synchronization is active. Check the backup you made before repair and the storefront’s own save status. The Xbox app warning specifically says unbacked-up saves may not be retained, which is why the backup must precede Verify and Repair. If no backup exists, support is safer than copying files from an unknown directory.

The repair option is unavailable
Make sure the game is installed through the storefront you opened and that the client is updated. A manager’s “clean” command is not a substitute for storefront verification. If the option remains absent, use the storefront’s current help or E-Day technical-support route rather than following instructions for another edition.
