If you only want to hide Avira’s menu bar icon while keeping the app, Avira’s support instructions reviewed here do not document a hide-icon setting. The supported route they describe is to uninstall Avira Security for Mac, which removes the app—not merely its icon. First check whether the symbol is actually a macOS control; Apple provides separate controls for those items.
First identify what the menu bar icon represents
Apple’s menu bar instructions apply to items added from System Settings and Control Center. To remove one of those, use System Settings → Menu Bar to deselect the item, or drag the Control Center item off the menu bar. Those controls are not documented as a way to hide an app-owned Avira icon. If you recognize the icon as Avira and want it gone, use Avira’s uninstall procedure below.
Avira’s support pages do not establish whether a particular release has an in-app option to hide its icon. They also do not specify which Avira or macOS versions their steps cover. If your interface differs, check Avira’s current support for your exact version rather than trying unverified removal commands.

Uninstall Avira Security for Mac
Avira’s standard removal procedure is to move the app from Applications to the Bin and let its uninstaller finish. Apple recommends quitting an app before uninstalling it; it also notes that an app’s own uninstaller is the best way to remove associated login items, extensions, or other files stored elsewhere.

- Quit Avira if it is open.
- In Finder, choose Go → Applications from the menu bar.
- Drag Avira to the Bin. Avira says its uninstaller starts automatically.
- Wait for the uninstall process to finish, then click Finish.
- Empty the Bin to permanently erase the item.
Moving the app to the Bin is not the whole process: allow Avira’s uninstaller to run and finish.
If Avira will not uninstall
For legacy Avira Antivirus for Mac only
Avira documents a Terminal fallback for the rare case in which Avira Antivirus for Mac can no longer be conventionally uninstalled after an operating-system update. This is not the normal procedure for the current Avira Security for Mac app.

- In Finder, choose Go → Utilities → Terminal.
- Run this Avira-documented command:
/Applications/Utilities/Avira-Uninstall.app/Contents/MacOS/Avira-Uninstall
Avira says this command removes Avira Antivirus for Mac completely. Use it only for the legacy product and failure condition described by Avira.
If a failed uninstall left antivirus files running
Avira’s separate remedy for leftover files is an attached Avira_Uninstaller.zip cleanup script. Avira describes this for cases where the uninstaller was moved to the Trash but the program did not uninstall correctly.

- Download and unpack
Avira_Uninstaller.zipfrom Avira’s support article. - Right-click
Avira.Uninstall.commandand choose Open. - Enter your credentials when Terminal opens and prompts you.
What uninstalling does not remove
Uninstalling Avira does not cancel a subscription purchased with the app. Manage or cancel billing separately through the relevant purchase channel. Uninstalling also does not delete documents or other files you created with the app.
If macOS says Avira is in use, make sure the app is closed. If it still cannot be removed, Apple advises restarting the Mac or starting it in Safe Mode before trying again.
