If Xbox sign-in stopped working immediately after Windows Update, first identify the update’s KB number and installation date, then remove it from Windows Update settings. On Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates. If Windows will not start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
Removing an update is a diagnostic rollback, not proof that the update caused the sign-in failure. Record the exact KB, test the same Microsoft account after restarting, and reinstall a corrected update or follow Microsoft guidance once the problem is confirmed. Removing a security update can reduce protection, and Microsoft warns that some updates cannot be uninstalled.
What to remove—and what the Xbox symptom does (and does not) prove
A generic message such as “Xbox cannot sign in” does not identify a particular Windows update. Several Windows components participate in authentication, including the Xbox app, Microsoft account services, Gaming Services and the operating system’s sign-in infrastructure. An update installed shortly before the failure is a reasonable suspect, but the timing alone is not conclusive.
Use Windows Update history to find the update’s full name, KB number and installation date. Those details let you roll back one specific change and give Microsoft or your administrator something precise to investigate. If the Xbox app is the only affected program, app repair may be safer than removing an operating-system update. If Windows itself is unstable, repeatedly crashing or unable to boot, the update may be a broader system problem and WinRE is the appropriate route.

Before uninstalling: protect the device and collect evidence
Uninstalling an update changes the security and reliability state of Windows. Microsoft’s guidance says, “Before uninstalling a security update, make sure you understand the risks.” A rollback can remove a vulnerability fix as well as the code that appears to have triggered the Xbox problem.
- Sign in with an administrator account. Standard users may be unable to remove updates.
- Write down the Xbox error text or code, when the failure began, and whether other Microsoft apps can sign in.
- Open Windows Update history and record the KB number, update type and install date before removing anything.
- Save open work and connect the computer to reliable power. The uninstall and restart can take several minutes.
- If the update is a security update, plan to install a corrected release or obtain vendor guidance rather than leaving the machine rolled back indefinitely.
- Do not remove several updates at once. Removing one candidate and testing makes the result identifiable and easier to reverse.
Choose the rollback route
Use the normal Settings route whenever Windows is usable. Use WinRE only when Settings cannot be opened, Windows cannot complete startup, or the system is too unstable to stay running long enough to uninstall the update.

Identify the suspect KB in Windows Update history
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Expand the relevant quality, feature or other update category and note the KB number, title and installation date.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Choose View update history.
- Record the KB number, title and date for the update that preceded the Xbox failure.
Do not infer the KB from the Xbox symptom alone. If several updates were installed on the same day, start with the newest candidate, but keep the complete list so you can explain exactly what was tested.

Uninstall the update from Settings
Windows 11 procedure
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Scroll to the related section and select Uninstall updates. Windows opens a list of removable updates.
- Locate the candidate by matching its KB number and installation date. Avoid selecting a different update merely because its title looks similar.
- Select Uninstall beside the update, then confirm when Windows asks.
- Allow Windows to complete the removal and restart. Do not power off the computer during the process.
Windows 10 procedure
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select View update history, then choose Uninstall updates.
- In the installed-updates window, select the candidate KB and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the prompt and restart when requested.
Microsoft states that “some updates cannot be uninstalled.” A missing Uninstall option, an error during removal or an update that reappears after restart can therefore be expected behavior rather than evidence that you selected the wrong menu.
If Windows will not boot: uninstall through Windows Recovery Environment
Windows Recovery Environment is the supported fallback when the desktop is unavailable. You can reach it after repeated failed starts, from Windows’ recovery options, or from Windows installation/recovery media. The wording can vary slightly by build, but the relevant menu is the same.
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Uninstall Updates.
- Choose Uninstall latest quality update if the failure followed a regular cumulative update. Choose Uninstall latest feature update if it followed a Windows version upgrade and that option is offered.
- Follow the prompts, authenticate if asked, and let Windows restart.
WinRE may not present a KB number to choose from; it normally offers the latest quality update or latest feature update category. That makes the pre-removal record from Update history especially valuable. If the system still cannot start after the rollback, the boot failure may have another cause, and repeating update removal is unlikely to help.

Restart and test Xbox sign-in correctly
After Windows starts, open the Xbox app and test the same Microsoft account that failed before. Use the same network and account conditions where possible so the comparison is meaningful. Check whether the app now reaches the sign-in screen, accepts credentials and remains signed in after closing and reopening it.

- Sign-in works: Record the removed KB and the time of the successful test. Use only the update-pause or deferral controls available in your Windows edition and organizational policy while you seek a corrected update.
- Sign-in still fails: The update may not be the cause, or the rollback may not have removed the component involved. Proceed to Xbox app repair rather than removing unrelated updates at random.
- Windows became less stable: Restore the removed update when possible and seek Microsoft or device-vendor guidance, especially if the removed package was a security update.
Repair or reset the Xbox app when rollback does not help
If Windows is otherwise functioning and the problem is confined to Xbox, repair the app before attempting more invasive system changes. Windows provides these controls only for apps that support them.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox in the list and open its menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair. Windows attempts to correct the app without deleting its stored app data.
- Restart the Xbox app and test sign-in.
- If Repair does not resolve the issue and a Reset button is available, select Reset, confirm, and test again. Reset can remove the app’s local data and require you to configure or sign in again.
If Advanced options, Repair or Reset is not shown, that control is not available for the installed app on that Windows build. Do not substitute random registry edits or scripts; use the available Windows and Microsoft support paths instead.

Gaming Services scripts: a narrow, dated workaround
Microsoft documented a separate Windows 10 workaround for Gaming Services installation or startup errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F. The procedure removes Gaming Services packages and two Gaming Services registry service keys with PowerShell, restarts the PC, and then reinstalls Gaming Services from the Xbox app. Microsoft published that guidance for a 2021 issue, with KB5004476 released on June 11, 2021 as the out-of-band resolution.
This is not a general Xbox sign-in fix and is not the first step for an unspecified authentication failure. Use it only when the documented error family matches and you can follow Microsoft’s exact KB5004327 instructions. Registry and package removal mistakes can damage app installation or other Windows functions, so do not improvise commands, broaden the deletion to other keys, or run the workaround merely because uninstalling a Windows update did not help.
Quality update versus feature update
Latest quality update
A quality update is the normal cumulative Windows update category. If Xbox sign-in broke after a recent monthly update and Windows otherwise starts, the named KB in Update history is the most precise rollback candidate. Removing it can also remove security and reliability fixes delivered in that package.

Latest feature update
A feature update changes the Windows version more substantially. WinRE may offer Uninstall latest feature update when a version upgrade is the suspected trigger. Because this rollback affects a larger set of operating-system changes, confirm that the timing matches the upgrade and back up important work before proceeding.
What to do when the update cannot be removed
Some updates are permanent on a particular build, have already been superseded, or are protected by servicing rules. If Settings and WinRE both report that removal is unavailable, do not force the uninstall with undocumented commands. Keep the KB number and error text, repair or reset the Xbox app when those controls are available, and check for a newer Windows update or an official fix.
If the Xbox failure affects multiple accounts or other Microsoft apps, treat it as a broader Windows or account-service problem rather than an Xbox-app-only defect. If only one account fails, verify that account independently on another device or in a browser before changing more system components; an account or service outage can look like an update problem.

Removing a security update leaves the computer without that package’s protection. Keep the rollback temporary, limit exposure while investigating, and reinstall a corrected update when one is available. If the removed update addresses an actively exploited vulnerability, contact your organization’s administrator or Microsoft support promptly instead of leaving the system in the rolled-back state.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 Xbox sign-in failure that appears after an update may therefore require a supported upgrade plan, an organization-managed maintenance policy or direct vendor guidance rather than an expectation of a new free fix.
