To remove one Steam game, use that game’s Library entry and its game-level uninstall command. After Steam finishes, inspect only the matching game folder in the Steam library where it was installed and delete it if it is still present and you no longer need its contents. Do not use Windows or macOS procedures for uninstalling the Steam client when your goal is to remove a single title.

Before deleting anything manually, check saves, mods, screenshots, configuration files, Workshop content, and Steam Cloud status. Some of that data is stored outside the game’s installation folder, and deleting a folder does not necessarily remove every trace of a game.

First decide what you are removing

Steam has three different cleanup tasks that are often confused:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Task What it affects Correct approach
Uninstall one game The selected title’s local installation files Use the game’s Library entry and game-level uninstall command
Keep files for a later reinstall The game folder and any saves or custom data you want to preserve Back up or leave the relevant library files in place; do not delete the folder
Uninstall the Steam client Steam itself and, on Windows, installed game content in the Steam installation directory Use the operating-system or Steam client-removal procedure only when you intend to remove Steam

Steam Support states on its Windows uninstall page: “This process will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” That warning applies to removing the client, not to the normal game-level uninstall action. Removing Steam is therefore not a shortcut for deleting one title.

Back up anything you may want later

A game uninstall can remove the main installation while leaving saves or settings elsewhere. Review these items before confirming removal:

  • Local saves: Many games store non-Cloud saves in a location chosen by the developer. On Windows, Steam says a common location is C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games, but this is not universal.
  • Steam Cloud data: Cloud synchronization can contain saves, settings, profile statistics, or other user-specific files. A cloud copy does not prove that every local file is safe to delete.
  • Mods and custom content: Mod managers, manually installed mods, reshade files, and custom maps may be outside the files Steam tracks.
  • Screenshots and recordings: These may be stored in Steam’s screenshot locations or in a game-specific folder rather than in the main executable directory.
  • Configuration files: Key bindings, graphics settings, logs, and controller profiles may remain after an uninstall.

If you are uncertain, copy the relevant save or configuration folders to another location before uninstalling. A backup drive can be used for preservation, but Steam does not recommend relying on an external hard drive as the active location for a live Steam library because connection and performance problems can affect games.

How to uninstall one Steam game

Use the game’s Library entry

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Find the game you want to remove. Make sure it is the correct title, especially if you have multiple editions or tools with similar names.
  3. Open the game’s context menu from its Library entry. Choose the current game-level command that removes or uninstalls local content, then confirm the dialog.
  4. Wait for Steam to finish. Do not force-close the client while it is changing files or updating library information.
  5. Refresh the Library view. The game should no longer be shown as installed, although it may remain in your account and be available to install again.

An older official game manual describes this action as right-clicking the game and selecting Delete Local Content…. Steam’s current wording can differ by client version and operating system, so use the uninstall or remove-local-content command shown for the selected game rather than assuming that older label is still exact.

What this action is meant to remove

The game-level action targets the title’s managed installation files in a Steam library. It is the safest first step because Steam knows which app is installed and can update its own library records. It is not a guarantee that every game-created file, save, mod, shader cache, or third-party launcher file will disappear.

Find the library folder that actually contains the game

Do not assume every title is in the default Steam directory. Steam supports multiple library folders, and a game may be installed on another internal drive or in a custom path.

Windows paths

Steam documents this as the default Windows game directory:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon

Each installed title normally has its own folder inside common. If you created another Steam library, use Steam’s Storage settings to identify the active library and inspect that location instead. A matching folder name is useful evidence, but confirm that it belongs to the game you just uninstalled before deleting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS paths

macOS installations can also use a library location selected by the user. Do not confuse the game’s library folder with Steam’s client data folder at:

~/Library/Application Support/Steam

That path contains Steam data and, depending on the installation, library-related content. It is not a reason to delete the entire folder when removing one game.

Linux and Steam Deck

Linux and Steam Deck users can have libraries on internal storage, removable storage, or another path selected in Steam. There is no single game-installation path that applies to every setup. Use Steam’s Storage view and the library assigned to that title. The researched Steam support material does not establish a universal rule for which Proton compatibility files or every non-Cloud save location a per-game uninstall removes, so back up desired data and check the game’s own support guidance before manual cleanup.

Remove a leftover game folder without damaging Steam

If Steam reports that the game is uninstalled but a clearly named folder remains, manual cleanup can reclaim the remaining space. Treat this as a narrow, game-specific operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exit Steam completely. Close the client rather than leaving it minimized in the notification area.
  2. Open the library location that actually held the game.
  3. Enter the library’s steamappscommon folder on Windows, or the equivalent common directory on another platform.
  4. Identify only the folder belonging to the uninstalled game. Check its name and contents; do not rely on a vague timestamp or a similarly named title.
  5. Move the folder to the Recycle Bin or Trash first if you may need to recover it. Empty the bin only after confirming that saves, mods, screenshots, and custom files are not needed.
  6. Reopen Steam and check the Library and Storage views.

Do not delete the entire steamapps directory, the entire common directory, userdata, the Steam installation folder, or a whole library merely to remove one game. Those locations contain other titles, account data, shared files, or library metadata.

Why a folder may remain

  • The uninstall stopped before all files were removed.
  • A mod, configuration, log, or third-party component was not managed by Steam.
  • The folder is in a different library than the one you checked.
  • The game used a separate launcher or publisher installer.
  • Steam’s library record and the files on disk are out of sync.

If the folder contains files you want to preserve for a reinstall, leave it in place. Steam’s support guidance explains that games can appear uninstalled when the client no longer recognizes files that remain in the correct library location. Re-adding or selecting that library can allow Steam to recognize existing files instead of downloading everything again.

Steam Cloud, userdata, and local saves

Steam Cloud is separate from the main game directory. Steam Support identifies these default local Cloud-data locations:

Platform Default local userdata location
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata

Within userdata, Steam organizes data by Steam account ID and game appID. A Cloud copy can differ from the local copy; Steam may display a conflict prompt when it detects that difference. Check the synchronization status and resolve any conflict before deleting local files. If a save matters, make an independent backup rather than assuming Cloud synchronization is complete.

Non-Cloud saves are game-specific. Developers decide where to store them, and some use Documents, AppData, a home-directory folder, or a location inside the game folder. Steam’s moving guidance specifically notes DocumentsMy Games as a common Windows location for third-party saves, not a universal one. If you cannot locate a save, consult that game’s support documentation or publisher before removing unrelated folders.

Keep the files or reclaim the space?

Your goal Recommended action What not to do
Reinstall soon without a large download Keep the game’s library folder or copy it to a backup location; keep required saves and custom files Do not delete the folder just because Steam currently shows the game as uninstalled
Free disk space permanently Uninstall through Steam, then remove only confirmed game-specific leftovers after backing up wanted data Do not erase shared libraries, Steam metadata, or userdata
Remove every Steam title and the client Follow the platform’s full Steam-removal procedure and preserve steamapps or backups first if needed Do not treat a one-game cleanup as a client uninstall

When Steam still says the game is installed

Check the selected library

Open Steam’s Storage management view and verify which library is assigned to the title. A game can be installed on a secondary drive while the default library appears empty. Search each configured library for the game’s folder before removing anything.

Decide whether the files are valuable

If you want to preserve the installation, do not delete the folder. Restore or add the library in Steam so the client can scan the existing files. If your goal is removal, exit Steam and delete only the confirmed game folder after the game-level uninstall has completed.

Do not force-close Steam during file operations

Steam warns that forcing the client closed while it is writing can corrupt library and installation information. Let downloads, updates, and uninstall operations finish normally. If Steam is genuinely unresponsive, restart the computer only after allowing as much time as practical and then verify the library state before manual deletion.

If the real problem is a damaged installation

An uninstall is not the right fix for every problem. If you want to repair missing or corrupt files while keeping the game installed:

  1. Open Library and select the game.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Allow Steam to compare and replace files, then launch the game again.

Steam notes that some local configuration files that fail verification are expected and should not automatically be replaced. Verification is therefore preferable to deleting the entire installation when the symptom is a crash, missing asset, or failed update rather than a desire to remove the game.

Uninstalling the Steam client is a separate procedure

Windows

Steam’s Windows guidance is explicitly for removing Steam itself. It says to exit Steam, move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first if you want to preserve installed games, and then use Windows Settings > Apps to uninstall Steam. The uninstaller removes the Steam installation directory and installed game content. Do not run it when you only want to remove one game.

Steam also warns against installing Steam directly into a folder that contains unrelated data, because the normal uninstaller can remove that folder. If Steam was installed in such a location, preserve unrelated files before starting client removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS

Steam’s Mac instructions say that simply dragging the Steam application to the Trash does not fully uninstall it. Steam Support’s wording is: “Just dragging the Steam program to the Trash will not fully uninstall Steam.” The full procedure is to quit Steam, move the Steam application from Applications to the Trash, then inspect ~/Library/Application Support/Steam.

If you want to retain game data, Steam says to delete the files and folders inside the Steam folder except SteamApps. If you want all Steam data removed, delete the entire Steam folder. Empty the Trash afterward. These are client-removal instructions, not required steps for uninstalling an individual game.

Linux and Steam Deck

The available official material does not establish one complete, platform-wide procedure for removing every Steam client file, Proton prefix, shader cache, and non-Cloud save on all Linux distributions or Steam Deck configurations. For one game, use the game-level Library action and inspect only its assigned library folder. For full client removal, follow the distribution’s package and Steam-specific guidance, preserving saves and libraries first.

Safety checklist before deleting anything manually

  • Steam is fully closed.
  • You confirmed the game title and the library path.
  • You checked Steam Cloud synchronization and resolved any conflict.
  • You backed up non-Cloud saves you want to keep.
  • You reviewed mods, screenshots, settings, and third-party launcher files.
  • You are deleting only the game-specific folder, not a shared Steam directory.
  • You are not editing the registry or deleting Steam client folders to remove one title.
  • You know whether the goal is disk-space recovery, a clean reinstall, or complete Steam removal.

Steam’s support material discusses registry removal only as part of manual Steam-client removal and warns that registry editing requires extreme care. It is not a routine step in uninstalling a game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should happen after cleanup?

After a successful one-game uninstall, Steam should treat the title as not installed, while the game remains in your account and can be downloaded again. The game’s main files should be gone from the library you checked. If a clearly named folder remains, remove it only after confirming that it contains no saves or custom files you need. Steam Cloud data, local saves outside the game directory, and files created by separate launchers may still exist because they are managed separately.
