If Android notifications stopped after you changed a setting, restore them in this order: the affected app’s notification permission and categories, Do Not Disturb or other Modes, alert and lock-screen visibility, and background-data access. Then retest the app while it is closed. This sequence separates notifications that were blocked from notifications that arrived silently, were hidden on the lock screen, or work only while the app is open.
Android menu names differ by phone maker and Android version. Use the closest matching path on your device, and check the manufacturer’s documentation when a setting is missing.
First identify what “notifications stopped” means
The fastest fix depends on the symptom. Before changing more settings, decide which pattern matches your phone. This prevents you from changing background controls when the real cause is a notification category, or disabling a useful mode when alerts are actually arriving silently.

Keep one additional distinction in mind: a notification can be delivered, displayed quietly, hidden from the lock screen, or prevented entirely. Those are different failures even though they all feel like “no notification.”

Restore the affected app’s notification permission
Android has a top-level permission for an app’s notifications. Turning that permission off blocks the app’s notifications, regardless of the app’s own settings. A second layer, called notification categories on many phones, controls individual kinds of alerts. You can therefore have the app permission enabled while one important category remains disabled.
Turn the app’s notifications back on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open App notifications. Some phones use a similar label such as an app list under Notifications.
- Select the app that is not alerting.
- Turn on the app’s notification switch.
Send a test message, reminder, or other event to the app after enabling it. If the app has no category controls, proceed to the next section. If it does, inspect every relevant category rather than assuming the top-level switch restored all alerts.
Re-enable the specific notification category
- Stay on the selected app’s notification page.
- Look for Notification categories, individual alert types, or a list of channels.
- Open the category associated with the missing alert, such as messages, calls, reminders, or updates.
- Enable that category.
- If the category offers an alert style, choose Alerting when you need sound or vibration; choose Silent only when quiet delivery is intentional.
Category names are controlled partly by the app, so they can differ between applications. If one kind of alert works and another does not, the category-level switch is a more likely explanation than a system-wide failure.
Turn off Do Not Disturb and other interruption controls
Do Not Disturb (DND) and Android’s other Modes can filter notifications even when app permissions are correct. A mode can also turn itself on again through a schedule, which makes a temporary fix appear unsuccessful.
Check the current mode from Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Swipe again if the full panel is not visible.
- Look for Do Not Disturb or an active Mode tile.
- If DND is active, tap it to turn it off, or open its details to see which mode is controlling interruptions.
The tile’s wording and location vary by device. If you do not see a tile, use Settings instead.

Review DND filters and schedules
- Open Settings.
- Tap Modes, then Do Not Disturb. On older Android releases, the entry may be called Do Not Disturb preferences.
- Review the notification filters. Check whether apps, people, conversations, or alert types are being excluded.
- Open the schedule or automatic-rule section.
- Disable any time-based rule that turns DND on during the hours when notifications disappear, or adjust it to the intended times.
Also inspect other Modes shown on your phone, including Bedtime or Driving. A mode other than DND can apply its own notification filters and may activate automatically. After changing a rule, wait for or create a test event during the affected period so you can confirm the filter is no longer responsible.
Check whether notifications are arriving silently or hidden
An alert can reach the phone without producing a sound, vibration, banner, or lock-screen item. That is a presentation problem, not necessarily a delivery problem. Check these controls after confirming the app and category are enabled.
Change a category from Silent to Alerting when appropriate
Open the app’s notification category again and inspect its behavior. An Alerting category is intended to make an audible or visual interruption according to the phone’s other sound and display settings. A Silent category can place the item in the notification shade without the interruption you expected. Select the behavior that matches how you want that category handled, then trigger a new notification.
Inspect lock-screen notification settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open the lock-screen notification option, which may be labelled Notifications on lock screen or a similar phrase.
- Choose the option that displays notifications on the lock screen if you want to see them before unlocking.
- Check the affected app’s own notification settings as well, because an app can limit what it exposes on the lock screen.
If alerts appear after unlocking but never on the lock screen, this setting is the relevant branch. Do not disable the app permission again; delivery is already occurring.
Use Notification history for recent context
Where available, Notification history can show recent notifications and may include items you dismissed or snoozed. Open Settings, go to Notifications, and look for Notification history. If the entry exists, use it to check whether the missing app generated an alert that was later dismissed or snoozed.
Notification history is not present on every device. Its absence does not indicate a fault, and it cannot restore an alert that was never generated; it is a diagnostic record for phones that support the feature.

Allow background data when alerts fail outside the app
Some apps need background data to check for new information and deliver notifications while you are not actively using them. If notifications appear only after you open the app, review Data Saver and the app’s background-data controls.
Check Data Saver
- Open Settings.
- Find the network or data-usage section and open Data Saver, if your phone provides it.
- Turn Data Saver off temporarily and retest the app while it is closed, or allow the affected app to use unrestricted background data through the available exception control.
Exact labels and locations differ by Android version. Some phones place Data Saver under Network & internet; others use a data-usage submenu. Follow the wording on your device rather than searching for an identical path.
Check the app-level background-data setting
- Open Settings and go to the app or network-data section.
- Select the affected app.
- Look for a mobile-data, data-usage, or background-data control.
- Allow background data for the app, then close the app and generate a new test notification.
Background data is only one possible cause. Official Android guidance does not establish one universal battery-optimization path that fixes notification failures on every phone, so do not assume that changing a battery setting will solve this symptom. If background data is already allowed and alerts still fail, return to the permission, category, and Mode checks.
Retest in a controlled way
Changing several settings at once makes it hard to know which control mattered. After each meaningful change, use a simple retest:
- Confirm the app’s top-level notification permission is on.
- Confirm the category for the test event is enabled and has the intended Alerting or Silent behavior.
- Make sure no active Mode is filtering the event.
- Lock the phone or leave the app, depending on the symptom you are testing.
- Trigger one new event from another device or service.
- Check the notification shade, sound or vibration, and lock screen separately.
- If the event appears, repeat the test once under the original conditions, such as during the scheduled period or while the app is closed.
This separates a restored permission from a restored background connection. A message that appears only after opening the app still points to background-data behavior, while an alert that appears in the shade but not on the lock screen points to display settings.

Follow the symptom-specific troubleshooting branches
Only one app stopped notifying
Start with that app’s top-level permission, then inspect its individual categories. If other apps alert normally, a system-wide DND rule is less likely, although a Mode may still filter only certain apps or categories. Check the app’s own in-app notification preferences after Android’s controls are enabled; the Android settings cannot force an app to generate a notification that the app itself has disabled.
Most or all apps stopped notifying
Check Quick Settings for DND and review Settings → Modes → Do Not Disturb. Inspect automatic rules and other active Modes before changing each app individually. If every app is affected in the same way, a system-level filter is a more efficient first check than opening dozens of app pages.
Alerts are visible but have no sound or vibration
Inspect the relevant category’s Alerting or Silent selection. A Silent notification can still be present in the notification shade. Also check whether an active Mode is suppressing interruptions while allowing notifications to remain available for later viewing.
Alerts appear only after unlocking
Check Notifications on lock screen and the affected app’s lock-screen behavior. This symptom indicates that delivery may be working while the lock-screen presentation is restricted.
Alerts appear only when the app is opened
Review Data Saver and background-data permission. Retest with the app closed. If the app still updates only when opened, document the exact device model and Android version before contacting support; menu names and background behavior vary by manufacturer.

Alerts stop at the same time every day
Look for a DND schedule or an automatically enabled Mode such as Bedtime or Driving. Disable the schedule temporarily and test during the previously affected hours. If alerts return, re-create the schedule with the intended start and end times.
When your phone’s menus do not match
Android is not a single identical interface across all phones. Manufacturers can rename, regroup, or add controls, and older Android versions may use different entries. Google Android Help states: “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Use the manufacturer’s support documentation for the exact model when you cannot find App notifications, Modes, Notification history, Data Saver, or lock-screen controls.

When contacting support, provide the model, Android version, affected app, whether one or all apps are affected, whether alerts are absent or merely silent, and whether the problem occurs only in the background or on a schedule. Those details direct support to the relevant control faster than saying only that notifications are not working.
Prevent the problem from returning
- After changing DND or another Mode, review its automatic schedules so it does not re-enable itself unexpectedly.
- When silencing an app category, note which category you changed; the top-level app permission and each category are separate controls.
- When troubleshooting, change one setting at a time and trigger a fresh test event.
- Use Notification history, when available, to distinguish dismissed or snoozed alerts from alerts that were never delivered.
- Record the working path on your specific phone, because a future Android update or manufacturer interface may rename the same control.
Working through these checks in order restores the setting that actually blocked the alert instead of masking the symptom with unrelated changes.
