To underline typed text in Samsung Notes, select the text and tap the underlined U in the formatting toolbar. If the icon is missing, swipe the toolbar horizontally to reveal more controls. The toolbar steps are reported by Samsung Community contributors; the exact layout can vary by app version and device.
Underline typed text in Samsung Notes
- Select the text. Open the note, then touch and hold a word and drag the selection handles across the word or passage you want to format. Confirm that the intended text is highlighted.
- Find the underline control. Look for an underlined U in the formatting toolbar. If it is not visible, swipe horizontally across the toolbar to inspect its other controls. In an October 2026 Galaxy S24 discussion, a Samsung Community contributor said the feature remained available by sliding the toolbar to the left; a July 2026 Galaxy S23+ discussion described a similar way to reveal the control. These are community-reported steps, not an official Samsung procedure: Galaxy S24 discussion and Galaxy S23+ discussion.
- Apply the style. Tap the underlined U to underline the selected text.
If your toolbar looks different, check that Samsung Notes is current and account for differences between device and app versions. The available evidence does not establish one identical toolbar path for every release.

Formatting you applied in Notes
An underline added with the Notes formatting toolbar is a text style applied to your selection. The reported control is in the on-screen toolbar; the steps do not require an S Pen or another accessory.

Keyboard spelling or correction marks
An underline shown while typing may instead be a keyboard proofreading or correction cue, not formatting saved in the note. Samsung places related keyboard options under Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings. Available options and screen labels can vary by carrier, model, and software version. Blue underlined links in Notes
Samsung Notes can automatically recognize items such as URLs, email addresses, numbers, dates, times, and addresses as blue hyperlinks. To disable that behavior, open Samsung Notes > menu > Settings and turn off Show links in notes. This affects automatic link recognition, not ordinary underline formatting. If the underline icon still is not visible
- Make sure you selected typed text and that it is highlighted; selecting a handwritten mark or placing the cursor without selecting text is a different action.
- Swipe across the formatting toolbar to check for controls outside the visible area.
- Check for a Samsung Notes update, then look again; toolbar layouts may differ between versions and devices.
- If the underline appears only while typing, check whether it is a keyboard correction cue rather than a style applied in Notes.
- If the mark is a blue link, review the Show links in notes setting instead of looking for the text-formatting control.
