If a wet floor cleaner leaves water behind, makes a different sound, or stops collecting liquid, start with the dirty-water tank, float, filter and the accessible suction path. A full tank or engaged float can stop pickup; hair and debris can block the foot channel, hose, strainer or air channel; and a filter that is still damp can restrict airflow.
The exact access points and indicators differ by model. The procedure below is based on official troubleshooting for selected BISSELL CrossWave families and Tineco Floor One machines, not a universal repair procedure. Find the model number and owner’s manual before removing any part. Never open the motor housing or sealed electrical sections.
What to check first
Turn the cleaner off before removing a tank, brush window or brush roll. Unplug a corded machine. Keep water away from charging contacts and electrical openings. If the machine will not power on, use the model’s power troubleshooting procedure rather than treating the symptom as a clog.
Have the model number available. A CrossWave Edge, CrossWave OmniForce, CrossWave Pet Pro, CrossWave Cordless model and a Tineco Floor One S5 do not necessarily expose the same passages or use the same test cycle. Do not push a tool into an opening that the manual does not identify as user-accessible.

Why a wet floor cleaner loses suction

These are diagnostic categories, not proof of a particular failure. A motor, pump, sensor or internal seal can also fail, and those parts should be handled by the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
Step-by-step procedure
1. Confirm that suction is being commanded
Some cleaners do not begin water pickup until the correct cleaning mode is selected and the handle is reclined. On the cited CrossWave and Pet Pro guidance, select the appropriate Hard Floor or Rug mode. Cordless instructions likewise require a floor-mode button and a reclined handle. Use the labels on your machine rather than assuming every model uses the same button.
If the machine powers on but does not respond to a mode button, or if it shuts off immediately, follow the model’s power and battery troubleshooting path. A non-starting machine has not yet been shown to have a blockage.

2. Empty and inspect the dirty-water tank
- Power down the cleaner and remove the dirty-water tank according to the manual.
- Empty all liquid and remove hair, lint and other debris from the tank and its strainer or screen.
- Inspect the lid, gasket or seal, and float. The float must move freely and must not be held up by sludge or a misplaced part.
- Check that the filter is installed in the correct orientation, with no folded edge or gap.
- Reinstall the tank firmly until it clicks or reaches the model’s fully seated position. Look for a visible gap around the tank.
A full tank can engage a float or full-tank sensor. On some models this reduces pickup; on others it can stop suction or power. Emptying the tank is therefore the first maintenance step, not an optional final check.
3. Clean the filter and allow it to dry completely
Remove only the filter and screen parts that the owner’s manual identifies as washable. Clear loose debris before washing. Keep the filter open or assembled exactly as instructed so trapped water can drain.

For the cited CrossWave Edge and CrossWave Cordless guidance, BISSELL specifies 24 hours of drying before reuse. Tineco’s Floor One instructions likewise require a washed filter to be thoroughly dry. Reinstalling a damp filter can restrict airflow and imitate a clog. Do not accelerate drying with a heat source that could deform the filter.
Inspect the filter for a torn media, distorted frame, missing seal or damage. A damaged or missing part needs the exact replacement for the model; replacing a clean, intact filter is not a guaranteed cure for lost suction.

With the machine off, inspect the area behind the brush roll, the foot channel and the space below or inside the dirty-tank pocket. Hair and debris can obstruct a hose, suction port, strainer, screen or air channel.
For the listed CrossWave and Pet Pro procedures, BISSELL recommends a toothbrush or another soft-bristled brush for the designated accessible channel. Use that tool only where the model instructions show an access point. Remove loosened debris by hand or rinse a removable part as directed.
- Remove the brush window and brush roll only if your model’s instructions permit it.
- Lift away wrapped hair and solid debris rather than forcing it deeper into the passage.
- Brush the accessible foot channel and suction opening with soft bristles.
- Clean the brush roll and window, then inspect them for cracks, warping or a missing edge seal.
- Check the tank pocket, strainer and screen for residue that could close the air path.
Do not use a knife, wire, screwdriver or other sharp object to probe a sealed passage. Do not disassemble the motor, pump or internal tubing.

5. Reassemble without creating an air leak
Before testing, verify that every removable part is dry and correctly oriented. The filter edge must not be folded; the float must move; the lid and gasket must be present; the tank must be fully seated; and the brush window must latch. A part that is almost installed can create an air leak and produce the same symptom as a blocked channel.
6. Run the model’s suction or clean-out test
Use the test, self-clean cycle or recovery check specified for your model. Watch for water returning to the dirty tank and listen for normal airflow. Some BISSELL procedures use a clean-out test in which water should flow back into the dirty tank. If that recovery does not occur after the permitted cleaning steps, stop and contact manufacturer support rather than repeatedly forcing the machine to run.
On CrossWave OmniForce, an E1 message together with a clog icon indicates a system clog. Clear the user-accessible locations in the OmniForce procedure and retest. If the indicator remains or suction is still absent, the machine needs model-specific service.
Model-specific checks
BISSELL CrossWave Edge
The CrossWave Edge troubleshooting guidance links reduced suction and a change in operating sound to the dirty-water tank and float system. Empty the tank, clean the hose behind the brush-roll area and the area under the tank, wash the filter with warm water, and check that the float moves freely. Allow the washed parts to dry for 24 hours, reinstall them and perform the specified recovery test.
BISSELL recommends replacing Edge filters every three months, or as needed. That is a manufacturer recommendation for the named Edge series, not a universal service interval for every wet floor cleaner. Replace the filter when the model’s part is damaged, missing or due according to that guidance; match the exact model and part number.

BISSELL CrossWave OmniForce
On OmniForce, a full wet-debris tank can stop suction and power. Dry debris can also substantially affect suction. Empty the tank and inspect the suction port, foot channel, strainer, filter, screen, sensors, brush roll and brush window in the sequence described by the OmniForce instructions.
Clear only accessible areas, dry washable components fully and confirm that the tank and brush window are latched. If the E1 and clog icon remain, or the clean-out test does not recover water, move to manufacturer support.
BISSELL CrossWave and Pet Pro
First select the correct floor mode and recline the handle so suction is activated. Then empty the dirty tank and clean its strainer, float and filter. Confirm that the filter fits flat, the tank gasket is present and the tank clicks into place.
The cited BISSELL procedure identifies an accessible foot debris channel. Clear it with a toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush, then clean the brush roll and window. Do not assume that a passage hidden behind a cover is safe to open simply because it resembles the accessible channel on another CrossWave model.

Follow the model’s power and floor-mode activation steps first. Empty the dirty tank, clean the strainer, wash the filter, screen and float as directed, and allow the filter to dry for 24 hours where that guidance applies. If pickup is still poor, inspect the accessible tank-pocket and foot suction pathways and remove hair or debris with a soft brush.

Battery status, charging contacts and power controls have their own troubleshooting path. A cordless unit that will not start should not be opened in an attempt to reach the suction hose.
Tineco Floor One S5
Tineco’s Floor One S5 FAQ identifies a full dirty-water tank and a blocked air channel as checks when water pickup is poor. Empty the tank, clean the permitted filter and air-channel areas, and dry the washed filter thoroughly before reinstalling it.
Tineco Floor One Stretch S6
The Stretch S6 guidance adds roller obstruction to the full-tank and blocked-air-channel checks. Inspect the roller only through the access provided by the S6 instructions. The fact that a BISSELL model exposes a particular hose or foot channel does not establish that the same internal access or cleaning method is suitable for a Tineco machine.
When cleaning does not restore pickup
Stop user-level maintenance and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider when any of these conditions applies:
- The designated suction test still produces no suction after the tank, filter, float and accessible path have been cleaned.
- Water fails to return to the dirty tank during the manufacturer’s clean-out or recovery test.
- The tank, lid, gasket, brush window or other removable part is cracked, warped or missing.
- A clog or E1 indicator remains after the model’s permitted checks.
- The machine shows electrical damage, overheats, smells burnt or repeatedly shuts down.
- Removing the next part would require opening a motor housing, sealed pump or electrical compartment.
Have the model and serial information ready when contacting support. Describe whether the tank was full, whether the filter was fully dry, which accessible areas were cleaned and what happened during the specified test. That information helps distinguish a maintenance blockage from a failed component.
Filter replacement and parts decisions
Buy a replacement only after identifying the exact model and part number. Compare the original part with the proposed replacement for frame shape, seal, screen and fit. A filter that is merely dirty should be washed and dried according to the manual; a new filter is appropriate when the original is damaged, missing or due for replacement under the model’s instructions.
Do not assume that a generic filter fits because it looks similar. An incorrect seal or frame can create an air leak, allow debris past the filter or prevent the dirty tank from seating. Official parts guidance is the safest way to verify compatibility.

- Empty the dirty-water tank before its float or full-tank indicator is triggered.
- Remove hair and debris from the strainer, screen, brush roll and brush window after cleaning, using only the access points shown for the model.
- Wash filters only as directed and do not reinstall them until they are completely dry.
- Check the tank lid, gasket, float and filter fit whenever the tank is removed.
- Keep the brush window and tank pocket free of residue that could restrict the air path.
- Respond to a clog indicator or unusual sound immediately instead of continuing to run the machine.
Quick decision checklist
- Is the cleaner powered on, in the correct floor mode and held at the required handle angle?
- Is the dirty-water tank empty, undamaged and fully clicked into place?
- Does the float move freely, and are the lid, gasket, strainer and screen correctly installed?
- Is the filter clean, undamaged and completely dry?
- Have you cleared only the model-designated foot, hose, port, air-channel and brush areas?
- Are the brush roll and window clean, undamaged and secured?
- Does the manufacturer’s suction or clean-out test return water to the dirty tank?
If the answer to the last question is no after the permitted maintenance, the safe next step is model-specific support or repair, not deeper disassembly.
