If your Android phone will not start, the safest fix depends on what it can still display or enter, plus its exact model and software build. Identify those first, then use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions. A reset or software reinstall can erase local data; manual firmware flashing can make the problem worse if the files or steps do not match the device.
What does “bricked” mean when an Android phone will not start?
“Bricked” is an imprecise description, not a diagnosis. A phone stuck on its logo, repeatedly restarting, showing Android Recovery, or opening a bootloader screen may still have a supported recovery path. A phone with no display or charging response may have a hardware problem instead.
Before changing anything, write down the exact model and note what happens when you press the power button: whether a charging indicator or logo appears, whether the phone restarts, and whether it enters Android Recovery, Fastboot/bootloader, or a Samsung emergency recovery screen. Button combinations vary by model and generation, so do not assume instructions for one Android phone apply to another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use a known-good charger to rule out a depleted battery or charging accessory issue.
- If the manufacturer’s recovery procedure requires a computer, check that the cable fits both devices and supports data transfer, not just charging.
- Record any recent impact, liquid exposure, update, or other change that preceded the failure.
Can you unbrick an Android phone without losing data?
Sometimes a phone that still boots far enough may recover without a reset, but the official reset and reinstall routes described here are destructive. Do not treat firmware flashing as a way to retrieve files from an unbootable phone. If the local data is irreplaceable and not backed up, stop before resetting, reinstalling, unlocking the bootloader, or flashing firmware; ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider about options for that exact device. Recovery instructions do not guarantee that inaccessible data on an encrypted phone can be recovered.

Google states on its Pixel Update and Software Repair page: “Reinstalling your software will reset your Pixel device to factory settings and erase all your data.” A factory reset from Android Recovery also erases local data; Google’s Pixel reset guidance warns that resetting the phone deletes its data.
How should you choose a recovery route?
Match the method to the phone’s model and current state rather than choosing a generic “unbrick” fix. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact device, and stop if the phone cannot enter the mode that those instructions require.

- Identify the model and visible state. Note whether the phone reaches a logo, Android Recovery, Fastboot/bootloader, or a manufacturer-specific emergency screen.
- Check power and connection basics. Try a known-good charger. For a computer-based procedure, use a compatible data-capable cable; Google’s Pixel repair workflow requires a USB connection.
- Open the official instructions for that model. Confirm the supported recovery mode and follow the current on-screen sequence, not a button combination or firmware file intended for another model or variant.
- Pause at any reset, initialization, unlock, or reinstall prompt. Proceed only if you accept the data-loss and device risks, or have confirmed a suitable backup.
- Escalate if the supported method fails or the phone shows hardware symptoms. Repeating resets or trying unrelated firmware is not a substitute for service assessment.
How do you try the official recovery route?
Google Pixel: Fastboot to Recovery and factory reset
Google documents a Fastboot-to-Recovery factory-reset path for Pixel phones. Use Google’s instructions for the specific Pixel model and follow the screen labels in that guide: Reset your Pixel phone manually with Fastboot mode. This route ends in a factory reset, so it erases local data. Do not proceed if preserving unbacked-up files is more important than restoring the phone’s ability to start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle Pixel: web-based software repair
Google’s Pixel software repair tool uses a USB connection to a computer. Confirm that the tool supports your model and follow its current prompts. Google says software reinstallation resets the Pixel to factory settings and erases all data. Check that your cable supports data transfer and matches the phone and computer ports; USB-C is relevant only when it is the connector your particular devices use.

Samsung: emergency software recovery in Smart Switch
Samsung’s Smart Switch Phone Recovery Guide covers recovery from the emergency recovery screen using the computer program’s More menu and Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization. Follow the guide for the exact device and screen you have. This documented route applies to the emergency recovery workflow; it does not establish a universal fix for every Samsung boot loop.
For a Galaxy phone that will not start or repeatedly reboots, use Samsung’s current device-specific troubleshooting and support guidance rather than assuming the Smart Switch emergency process applies.

What should you do if the phone is stuck on a logo or in a boot loop?
A logo freeze or repeated restart does not by itself identify the cause or the right repair. First determine whether the phone can enter a recovery or bootloader mode, then use the supported route for its model. If it enters Recovery or Fastboot, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that precise device; if it reaches a manufacturer emergency screen, use that manufacturer’s documented recovery process. Avoid selecting a factory reset until you have considered the data loss.
If the phone keeps restarting after an official recovery attempt, or the instructed mode is unavailable, stop experimenting with firmware intended for other models or regions. Persistent failure may require manufacturer or authorized service assessment.

When is manual firmware flashing appropriate?
Manual flashing is an advanced, model-specific option—not a universal Fastboot command that repairs any Android phone. Android’s Fastboot flashing documentation describes supported workflows, while its bootloader locking and unlocking documentation explains that unlocking behavior depends on device support and configuration. Some devices restrict unlocking.
- Use only firmware and instructions published for the exact model and relevant build or variant.
- Check current bootloader and rollback guidance before attempting a downgrade.
- Understand whether the particular procedure will erase data, and do not treat it as a data-recovery method.
- Do not relock a modified device based on generic instructions.
- Stop if the manufacturer does not document the required operation for your device or if any step does not match the official instructions.
Google’s factory-images page currently warns that certain Pixel devices updated to May 2026 or later have an inactive-slot bootloader condition that can leave the phone unbootable if the prescribed sequence is missed. That warning applies to the affected devices and instructions on the page, not to every Pixel or Android phone. Check the current notes for the exact model before following any factory-image procedure.
When should you stop and seek service?
Arrange manufacturer or authorized service assessment if the display does not work, the phone shows no charging response, there are signs of liquid or impact damage, or it cannot enter any recovery mode supported for its model. A software reinstall cannot resolve every hardware failure. Google’s Pixel repair guidance advises checking warranty options when the display does not work, and Samsung provides device support and service options through its Galaxy troubleshooting page.
