On a vanilla Java Edition server, run pardon PlayerName in the server console or /pardon PlayerName in chat. For an IP ban, use pardon-ip IP-address. Bedrock Dedicated Server does not use Java’s pardon command; access is controlled through the owner-level allowlist and server permissions. These commands only reverse a ban made by your server. A Microsoft account enforcement action must be handled through Minecraft’s platform appeal process.
First determine what kind of block you are reversing
The correct unban action depends on three things: the server edition, the scope of the ban, and who imposed it. A Java account ban, a Java IP ban, a Bedrock allowlist restriction, a plugin moderation record, and a Microsoft account enforcement action are separate controls. Removing one does not automatically remove the others.

- Java account ban: the player’s Minecraft account is listed in the server’s player-ban list. Use
pardon. - Java IP ban: a network address is listed in the server’s IP-ban list. Use
pardon-ipand provide the address, not a player name. - Bedrock access restriction: the Dedicated Server’s owner-level allowlist and permission state determine whether the player may join. Use the allowlist commands and then reload it.
- Plugin or mod ban: a moderation plugin or server modification may maintain its own database. The vanilla command may not change that record; consult that specific software’s documentation.
- Microsoft account enforcement: the account has been blocked from multiplayer by Microsoft or Minecraft. A private-server owner cannot reverse that action.
If you do not know which case applies, ask what the player sees when connecting and check the server’s ban or allowlist records before changing anything.
Quick command reference
| Situation | Console command | In-game command | Authority noted in the documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java player/account ban | pardon PlayerName |
/pardon PlayerName |
Operator permission level 3 or higher in chat; the hosting-panel console has full permission. |
| Java IP ban | pardon 203.0.113.25 |
/pardon-ip 203.0.113.25 |
Use the address recorded by the server, not the player’s name. |
| Bedrock allowlist: grant access | allowlist add PlayerName |
/allowlist add PlayerName |
Microsoft documents this as an owner-level command requiring cheats. |
| Bedrock allowlist: remove an entry | allowlist remove PlayerName |
/allowlist remove PlayerName |
This removes allowlist membership; it is not the Java equivalent of pardon. |
| Bedrock view entries | allowlist list |
/allowlist list |
Owner-level allowlist administration. |
| Bedrock apply allowlist changes | allowlist reload |
/allowlist reload |
Reloads the allowlist after a change. |
In a server console, omit the leading slash. In in-game chat, include it. A command entered in the wrong place commonly produces an unknown-command or permission error even when the syntax itself is correct.

How to unban a player on Java Edition
1. Confirm that you have server authority
You must control the server or have permission to administer it. The documented Java procedure requires operator permission level 3 or higher when run from in-game chat. A hosting-panel console has full permission, so it is usually the safest place to run the command when no operator can join the server.
Do not ask the affected player to run the command. A banned player cannot use server administration privileges to remove their own ban.

2. Identify whether the ban is for a player or an IP address
In the console, run:
banlist
To inspect only account bans, run:
banlist players
To inspect only network-address bans, run:
banlist ips
Look for the exact player name or address. The player list and IP list are independent. A name can be removed while the player’s current address remains blocked, or an IP can be removed while a separate account ban remains.
3. Remove a player/account ban
From the server console, enter the name without a slash:
pardon PlayerName
From an operator account in chat, enter:
/pardon PlayerName
Replace PlayerName with the exact name shown by banlist players. The command changes the server’s player-ban list; it does not grant operator status, add the player to an allowlist, or undo a plugin ban.
4. Remove an IP ban
First use banlist ips to find the address that is actually listed. Then run this in the console:

pardon-ip 203.0.113.25
In chat, use:
/pardon-ip 203.0.113.25
The argument must be an IP address. Supplying a player name to pardon-ip will not remove an account ban. If the player has changed networks since the ban, their current address may not be the one in the list; check the server record rather than guessing.
5. Have the player reconnect
After the command succeeds, ask the player to disconnect completely and try again. If the server still refuses the connection, continue with the troubleshooting section instead of repeatedly issuing pardon. A successful account pardon does not prove that every other access control has been cleared.
Understanding Java IP bans before you remove one
An IP ban targets a network address rather than a single Minecraft account. Everyone sharing that address, such as family members on one home connection, may be affected. The reverse is also possible: a household or mobile address can change, making the old IP ban ineffective while the account ban remains in force.
Virtual private networks and other shared addresses can also make IP-based enforcement difficult to interpret. For ordinary moderation, the documented guidance presents a normal account ban as preferable to an IP ban in most situations because it limits the action to the identified account. If you remove an IP ban, verify that you intend to restore access for every user who may share that address.

Use pardon-ip only for an address that appears in banlist ips. It is not a way to unban every account associated with a name, and it cannot remove a ban stored by a plugin or by Microsoft.
How to restore access on a Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different administrative model from Java. Microsoft documents /allowlist as an owner-level command that requires cheats. The command reference describes it as managing the server allowlist. Bedrock’s native command set includes kick, but the Bedrock software described here does not provide a Java-style pardon command.

1. Confirm owner-level administration
Use the server owner’s administration interface or an authorized owner account. If a command is rejected, run /help to inspect the syntax available on that server and verify that cheats and the necessary owner permissions are enabled. The separate /permission command is available for dedicated-server owner administration.
2. Check the current allowlist
In the Bedrock console, enter:
allowlist list
In chat, enter:
/allowlist list
The command shows whether the player’s name or identifier is present. Use the identity format shown by your server; Microsoft documents the argument as <name: id>.
3. Add the player when allowlist membership is the missing permission
If the server is configured to admit only allowlisted players, add the player:
allowlist add PlayerName
Or from chat:
/allowlist add PlayerName
This is the Bedrock action that restores allowlist membership. It is not a conversion of Java’s pardon command, and it will not override a separate plugin, permission, or platform restriction.
4. Remove an allowlist entry only when you intend to deny allowlist access
To remove a name from the allowlist, use:
allowlist remove PlayerName
Or:
/allowlist remove PlayerName
Removing an entry blocks access when the server requires allowlist membership. Therefore, do not use remove as an unban operation. Use it when your policy is to stop admitting that player through the allowlist.
5. Reload the allowlist
Apply the current entries with:
allowlist reload
In chat, use:
/allowlist reload
Then have the player reconnect. If the connection is still refused, inspect owner permissions and any additional moderation software rather than assuming the allowlist command failed.

Console, chat, and hosting-panel differences
The same logical action has slightly different syntax depending on where it is entered. A panel’s console is outside the game and normally accepts commands without /. In-game chat is interpreted as a chat message unless the command begins with /. Chat execution also checks the issuing account’s operator or owner level.

When command unbanning does not work
The player is still listed in another ban list
Run both banlist players and banlist ips. If the name appears in the first list, run pardon. If the address appears in the second, run pardon-ip. Clear only the entry that matches the connection problem, then test again.
The player is blocked by a plugin or mod
Vanilla Java commands cannot be assumed to alter a plugin or modification’s separate ban database. No universal plugin command is established. Identify the moderation software installed on that server and follow its own unban procedure. Do not delete unrelated files or repeatedly edit vanilla lists in an attempt to change a third-party record.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The player is not on the Bedrock allowlist
Use /allowlist list, add the correct name or identifier with /allowlist add, and run /allowlist reload. If the player is already listed, the refusal is likely caused by another permission or moderation control, not by a missing allowlist entry.
The player sees a Microsoft or Minecraft account enforcement message
A platform-level enforcement action is broader than a private-server ban. Minecraft Help states that platform-banned players cannot play on servers, join Realms, or host or join multiplayer games. A server owner cannot reverse that action with pardon, pardon-ip, or an allowlist change. The affected player must use the platform’s official appeal route. A private-server ban, by contrast, is handled by that server’s administrator.
The player can connect but cannot perform expected actions
An unban restores admission; it does not automatically restore operator status, permissions, ranks, or plugin roles. Check the server’s permission configuration separately. On Bedrock, the owner-level /permission command is the dedicated-server control identified in Microsoft’s command table.

Editing Java ban files safely
Java servers store account bans in banned-players.json and IP bans in banned-ips.json. The documented administration guidance recommends commands instead of hand-editing these files because commands let the running server update its own state consistently.
Recommended Free Tools
If manual editing is unavoidable, follow this order:
- Stop the server completely before opening either JSON file.
- Create a backup copy so you can restore the previous list if the edit is wrong.
- Change only the intended entry in the correct file: account records belong in
banned-players.json; address records belong inbanned-ips.json. - Validate that the file remains well-formed JSON. A missing brace, comma, quote, or bracket can make the list unreadable.
- Start the server and verify the result with
banlist playersorbanlist ips.
Do not edit while the server is running. A running server may rewrite the file and overwrite your change, and malformed JSON can break the ban list. For a normal unban, the command route is safer and easier to audit.
Java and Bedrock: what actually differs
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| Primary reversal mechanism | pardon for an account ban; pardon-ip for an IP ban. |
Allowlist and permission administration; no Java-style native pardon command in the Bedrock software described here. |
| In-game authority | Operator permission level 3 or higher. | Owner-level allowlist administration; Microsoft’s reference states that cheats are required. |

Administration checklist before declaring the unban complete
- Confirm whether the server is Java or Bedrock Dedicated Server.
- Confirm that you are using the console or an account with the required authority.
- For Java, check both player and IP lists when the ban type is uncertain.
- Use the exact player name, identifier, or IP address shown by the server.
- For Bedrock, check allowlist membership, add the player if appropriate, and reload the list.
- Ask the player to reconnect after the change.
- If access still fails, distinguish a plugin/moderation ban from a Microsoft account enforcement action.
- Do not edit Java JSON files while the server is running.
What the player should report if access is still denied
Ask for the exact disconnect message, the edition they are using, the server address they selected, and whether they are connecting from the same network used previously. This information helps separate an old IP ban from an account ban or a platform enforcement action. It also reveals cases where the player is attempting to join a different server instance than the one you just changed.
For Java, compare the reported address with banlist ips and the reported name with banlist players. For Bedrock, compare the account’s name or identifier with allowlist list, then verify the owner’s permission state. A command that returns successfully but leaves a separate control unchanged is not evidence that the command failed.
