Windows provides several ways to enter characters that are not printed on your keyboard, including currency signs, mathematical symbols, accented letters, emoji, kaomoji, and punctuation such as em dashes. The best method depends on where you are typing:
- Use Windows + . for emoji, kaomoji, GIFs, and many symbols.
- Use Character Map when you need to browse characters by font and copy them.
- Use an Alt code for frequently used characters when you have a numeric keypad.
- Use Alt+X in Microsoft Word and other supported Office applications for Unicode values.
- Use the touch keyboard on touchscreen devices.
These methods work in Windows 11 and Windows 10. However, Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free security fixes or regular Windows Update support from Microsoft.
Method 1: Use the Windows symbol and emoji panel
The quickest general-purpose method is the built-in panel opened with a keyboard shortcut.
- Click in the text field where you want to insert the character.
- Press Windows+. (period).
- Select the relevant category at the top of the panel:
- Emoji for graphical emoji
- GIF for animated GIFs where supported
- Kaomoji for text faces such as
¯_(ツ)_/¯ - Symbols for punctuation, currency signs, accented characters, and other symbols
- Click a character to insert it at the cursor.
You can type in the panel’s search box to find an emoji instead of browsing the categories. The panel is useful in messaging apps, web forms, documents, and other text fields that accept pasted or inserted text.

When the shortcut does not work
Make sure the cursor is active in an editable text field before pressing the shortcut. The panel cannot insert a character into a location that does not accept text. If the shortcut still fails, use Character Map or the target application’s own symbol command.
Method 2: Insert symbols with Character Map
Character Map is built into both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is particularly useful when you need to inspect a character in a specific font before copying it.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Character Map.
- Press Enter to open the app.
- Choose a font from the font list. Segoe UI Symbol is a useful choice for many Unicode symbols.
- Click the character you want.
- Select Copy.
- Click in the destination application and press Ctrl+V.
Character Map shows characters available in the selected font. If a symbol is missing, appears as a box, or looks different after pasting, try another font. The font controls both whether a glyph is available and how it is drawn.

Method 3: Type special characters with Alt codes
Traditional Windows Alt codes are convenient for common characters, but they have an important hardware requirement: you must enter the numbers using a numeric keypad. The number row above the letters does not work for these codes.
- Place the cursor in the target text field.
- Turn on Num Lock if your keyboard requires it.
- Hold down the Alt key.
- Type the code on the numeric keypad.
- Release Alt.
| Character | Alt code |
|---|---|
| © | Alt+0169 |
| ® | Alt+0174 |
| ™ | Alt+0153 |
| • | Alt+0149 |
| § | Alt+0167 |
| – | Alt+0150 |
| — | Alt+0151 |
| ¶ | Alt+0182 |
| ¡ | Alt+0161 |
| ¿ | Alt+0191 |
| € | Alt+0128 |
| £ | Alt+0163 |
| ¥ | Alt+0165 |
Keep leading zeroes in codes that require them. For example, use Alt+0128 for the euro sign rather than assuming that Alt+128 is equivalent.

Alt-code problems on laptops
Many laptops do not have a separate numeric keypad. Some provide an embedded keypad activated with an Fn key, while others require an external USB or Bluetooth keypad. If your laptop has neither, use the emoji and symbol panel, Character Map, or the application-specific symbol tool instead.

Results can also differ according to the application, keyboard hardware, active input method, and font. Alt codes are not a universal way to enter every Unicode character in every Windows program.
Method 4: Use Unicode values in Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word supports Unicode conversion with Alt+X. This is an Office application command, not a Windows-wide shortcut that works in every text box.
Convert a hexadecimal code
- Type the character’s hexadecimal Unicode value. For example, type
0024. - Press Alt+X.
- Word converts the code to the character, producing $ in this example.
If the code is immediately beside other hexadecimal characters, select only the code before pressing Alt+X. Otherwise Word may convert a larger adjacent string. If the conversion is ambiguous, Microsoft also documents prefixing the value with U+; for example, 1U+B5 avoids the interpretation Word could otherwise give to 1B5.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find the Unicode value through Word’s symbol dialog
- Open a Word document.
- Choose Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
- Select a font and click the required character.
- Read the Character code field.
- Check the from: field. It identifies whether the value is Unicode (hex) or Symbol (decimal).
If the dialog reports Unicode (hex), the value can be used with Alt+X. If it reports Symbol (decimal), use the numeric-keypad Alt-code method instead.

Method 5: Use the touch keyboard
On a Windows tablet or touchscreen PC, tap the place where you want to type. The touch keyboard may open automatically. You can also select the Touch keyboard icon in the taskbar’s system-tray area.
The touch keyboard includes multiple layouts and modes, and the available controls vary by Windows version. Use its symbol or alternate-character controls to enter characters without a physical numeric keypad.
If the Touch keyboard icon is not visible, open Windows’ touch-keyboard settings and enable it. Microsoft provides a separate Enable and disable the touch keyboard in Windows procedure for restoring the taskbar icon.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need an emoji, GIF, or kaomoji | Windows+. | Fast browsing and search from the text field |
| You need to browse symbols by font | Character Map | Shows available glyphs and provides copy-and-paste |

Common mistakes and fixes
- Using the top number row for an Alt code: use the numeric keypad instead.
- Forgetting Num Lock: enable it when your keyboard needs Num Lock for keypad input.
- Trying Alt+X in a browser or arbitrary app: use Character Map or the Windows symbol panel unless the application specifically supports Alt+X.
- Seeing a square instead of a symbol: change the font to one containing that character, such as Segoe UI Symbol where appropriate.
- Converting too much text in Word: select only the hexadecimal code before pressing Alt+X.
- Assuming every application displays the same symbol identically: glyph design and availability depend on the selected font.
For a one-off character, the Windows panel or Character Map is usually the least troublesome choice. Reserve Alt codes for familiar characters and a real numeric keypad, and use Alt+X when you are working in an Office application that supports it.
