The most reliable method is to save a video’s transcript as Markdown in your Obsidian vault, keep the original YouTube URL and timestamps, then add your own summary and search terms. Use YTranscript when you want text in the note you are writing or in a side panel; use YouTube Transcript Fetcher when you want one structured source note per video. Both depend on an available YouTube caption track, and neither makes captions automatically accurate.
What you are building
A useful YouTube note has four layers:
- Source identity: video title, channel, URL, video ID, language, publication date and, when useful, duration or description.
- Retrievable source text: the transcript saved as Markdown inside your vault.
- Navigation: clickable timestamps that take you back to the relevant passage in the video.
- Your interpretation: a short summary, questions, decisions and links to related notes.
Saving only a copied transcript gives you words without context. Saving only a summary makes later verification difficult. Keeping both, with a stable source URL, lets Obsidian find an idea and lets you check what the speaker actually said.
Choose the capture path that fits your note

Decide first whether you are making a quick working note or a durable source record. For a research library, a separate Markdown file with frontmatter is usually easier to sort, deduplicate and link. For a live study session, a side panel avoids interrupting the note you are composing.

Install and prepare Obsidian
Install a community plugin
- Open Settings in Obsidian.
- Select Community plugins and, if prompted, turn off Restricted mode.
- Choose Browse, search for the plugin name, select the matching listing and press Install.
- Press Enable, then open the plugin’s settings page and review its output and language options.
Plugin listings change. At the time of the reviewed documentation (October 13, 2026), YTranscript was listed as version 1.5.0 with desktop and mobile support for Obsidian 1.7.2 or newer, while YT Knowledge Notes was listed as version 1.8.2 for Obsidian 1.13.1 or newer. Treat those as listing details, not permanent requirements; check the current listing before troubleshooting compatibility.

Create a predictable destination
Make a folder such as Sources/YouTube and decide how files will be named. A practical pattern is YYYY-MM-DD - Video title, with characters that your operating system permits. If you use Fetcher, enable its duplicate-check option and keep the video ID in frontmatter or the body. The ID remains useful when two videos have similar titles.
Method 1: insert or view a transcript with YTranscript
Insert text into the current note
- Open or create the note that will contain the video material.
- Copy the YouTube video’s URL.
- Run YTranscript’s insert-transcript command from the command palette. If the command is not visible, confirm that the plugin is enabled and that you are in an editable Markdown note.
- Paste or enter the URL when prompted, select the desired language or country setting when offered, and let the plugin retrieve the caption track.
- Keep the URL above the inserted transcript. Add your summary and questions before the long source block so they are visible when the note opens.
YTranscript documents clickable timestamps in inserted transcript text. Keep those links intact; they are the quickest route from a search result to the original passage.
Use the side panel while taking notes
- Open YTranscript’s side-panel command.
- Provide the YouTube URL and choose a language if the video offers more than one caption track.
- Search within the panel for a distinctive term, then copy only the lines that support your idea into the note you are writing.
- Retain the timestamp with every copied quotation or claim.
The panel is useful when you do not want a full transcript in your permanent note. It also separates raw source material from your own wording, reducing the chance that a later reader mistakes a caption for your conclusion.
What YTranscript sends
YTranscript states that it sends the video ID and language/country settings to YouTube to obtain a caption track and that it contacts no other servers. A caption request still requires an available track; the plugin does not establish universal access to every video’s spoken content.
Method 2: create a source file with YouTube Transcript Fetcher
Fetch a complete Markdown note
- Open the Fetcher command from the command palette.
- Enter or paste the YouTube URL.
- Select the transcript language. If the preferred language is unavailable, choose an offered track and record that choice in the note.
- Choose the destination folder and output format, then enable YAML frontmatter if you want fields for sorting and Dataview-style workflows.
- Run the fetch and open the new Markdown file to check the title, URL, timestamps and transcript text.
Fetcher documents possible metadata fields including title, URL, video ID, channel, duration, view count, publication date and description. These are plugin-provided values; verify names, dates and numbers against the video when precision matters. Do not treat automatically populated metadata as a substitute for checking the source.

Add a human layer above the transcript
Place a compact interpretation block before the raw text. For example:

Write the summary in your own words. Put verbatim wording in quotation marks, preserve its timestamp and link to the source note. Link this source note to topic notes rather than duplicating the entire transcript in several places.

For a playlist, decide whether each video deserves its own note. Separate files make it easier to cite a precise source and re-fetch one item later. A combined note is convenient for a short course but can make search results ambiguous when several speakers use the same term. YT Knowledge Notes documents both per-video and combined playlist output; whichever route you choose, retain each video’s title and URL.
Make the transcript genuinely searchable
Save it inside the vault
Obsidian’s ordinary vault search cannot find text that exists only in a browser tab or an un-saved plugin panel. The transcript must be written to a Markdown file or inserted into a note in the vault. Once saved, Obsidian can index its words like any other note.
Start with a distinctive phrase
Use the global search pane and begin with an unusual term, a person’s name, a command, or a short quoted phrase. A rare phrase reduces noise better than a broad word such as “productivity.” Open the matching result, then follow its timestamp to verify context.

Narrow results with search operators
Obsidian’s search documentation supports content, section, line, block and property operators. Examples include:

Operator syntax can vary with Obsidian releases. If a query returns nothing, test the plain phrase first, check spelling and inspect the note’s frontmatter key exactly as written.
Use metadata consistently
Choose one spelling for fields such as source, channel, published, language and video_id. Consistency matters more than the particular names. A note with a URL in a paragraph is searchable, but a URL property also lets you filter and audit your source library later.
Keep timestamps and verify important claims
Searchable does not mean verified. Automatic captions can mishear names, technical vocabulary, numbers and punctuation. Transcript-processing tools can also introduce errors when they transform text. Before relying on a quotation, specification, legal statement or step-by-step command:
- Open the timestamp and listen to the original passage.
- Check the spelling of names, products, libraries and places.
- Confirm numbers and units from on-screen text when available.
- Mark uncertain wording instead of silently “correcting” the speaker.
- Keep the original transcript alongside your edited interpretation.
These checks are especially important when an AI-generated summary sounds polished. YT Knowledge Notes warns that generated content can be inaccurate; a fluent paragraph is not evidence that the underlying caption was correct.

Optional AI processing: benefits, costs and privacy
What AI can add
An AI step can turn a long transcript into headings, action items, flashcards or a concise summary. It is optional: YT Knowledge Notes and Fetcher document transcript and metadata workflows that do not require an API key. Start with the no-AI path so your vault remains useful even if a provider changes its pricing, limits or availability.
What leaves Obsidian
Fetcher says that enabling AI sends transcript content to the configured provider; API keys are stored locally in Obsidian settings and sent only to that provider. YT Knowledge Notes says YouTube requests go directly from Obsidian to YouTube, while AI requests go to the configured provider or local server and include transcript content and prompt context. Choose a local model if your setup supports one and you do not want transcript text sent to a hosted service, but confirm what your local server logs.
Obsidian Web Clipper’s Interpreter supports several hosted API and local-model options. Its documentation recommends small models for speed and reasonable accuracy, not as a guarantee. Do not send confidential interviews, private course material or copyrighted material to a service unless your rights and the provider’s terms permit it.
Use a review prompt, not blind automation
Ask an AI tool to preserve timestamps, label uncertainty and separate quotation from inference. Then compare every important output with the source. Store the generated summary in a clearly named section such as AI draft until you have reviewed it.
Troubleshooting common failures
No transcript appears
- Check that the URL points to a video rather than a channel, playlist page or shortened redirect.
- Try another language track; a video may have captions in one language but not another.
- Confirm that the video actually exposes a caption track. These tools retrieve captions; they do not guarantee speech-to-text for videos without one.
- Update the plugin and Obsidian if the current listing requires a newer version.
The text is in the panel but not in search
Save or insert the transcript into a Markdown note. A panel view alone is not a vault file. Then close and reopen the note, and search for a distinctive word that you can see in the saved text.

Duplicate notes keep appearing
Use Fetcher’s duplicate-check setting, keep the video ID in frontmatter and avoid changing the URL format manually. If duplicates already exist, search for the ID, choose one canonical note and link or archive the others.
Timestamps do not open the expected moment
Check that the timestamp link was not converted to plain text when you edited the transcript. If the video was replaced or its timing changed, the link may still open the video but no longer align perfectly; listen around the marked position and update your note.
Search misses an obvious word
Inspect the actual Markdown file for spelling, hidden punctuation and a different caption language. Try the unquoted word, then the exact phrase, and only afterward add content:, section: or property filters. A malformed frontmatter block can also prevent metadata-based queries while leaving ordinary text search intact.

Replace the example values with the metadata returned by the plugin and verify details that you plan to cite. Keep the source URL even when the file name already contains the title.
