If Windows 11 says search indexing is turned off or results are missing, restore it in this order: select an indexing scope in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, start the Windows Search service, and rebuild the index if the database is stale. A first index can take up to a couple of hours; a complete rebuild can take up to 24 hours, so incomplete results immediately after a repair are expected.
What Windows Search indexing does
Windows Search does not scan every file from scratch whenever you type a query. It maintains a database containing file names, locations, properties, and, when content indexing is enabled, words inside supported files. Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Search Indexing in Windows improves the speed and efficiency of searches by creating an index of files and their properties on your device.”
When the index is healthy, searches in the Start menu, File Explorer, and other Windows components can return results quickly. When indexing is disabled, paused, pointed at the wrong folders, or damaged, you may see no results, old results, or file names without matches for words inside documents.
Indexing is separate from the files themselves. Turning it back on does not restore deleted files and does not change the contents of your folders. It tells Windows which locations to catalog and allows the cataloging service to run again.

Turn indexing on in Searching Windows
Use the Settings page first. It controls the normal Windows 11 indexing scope and is the least disruptive repair.
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Select Searching Windows.
- Under Find my files, select an indexing scope.
Choose Classic or Enhanced

Changing from Classic to Enhanced starts work for locations that were not previously indexed. It may therefore take time before every folder appears in results. If you only need a particular directory, leave the broad setting alone and use location customization instead.
Understand properties versus file contents
An indexed item can be represented by its properties, its contents, or both. Properties include information such as the file name, path, type, and other metadata. Properties-only indexing lets you find a file by its name or metadata, but it will not find a word that appears inside the file. Content indexing is required for searches such as a phrase inside a Word document or a text-based PDF.
Content support depends on the file type and its installed filter. A file can therefore be present in the index while an in-file phrase still produces no match. First verify that the containing folder is indexed; then check whether the file type supports content search.
Add a missing folder to the index
Classic does not include every location, and Enhanced still follows Windows’ user-folder scope rather than automatically covering every drive or system directory. If one folder is absent, customize the locations instead of indexing the entire computer.

- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Select Customize search locations.
- In the indexing dialog, select Modify.
- Expand the folder tree and select the folders that should be searchable.
- Confirm the selection and close the dialogs.
Adding a large tree, a development directory, cloud-synchronised files, or many archives can substantially increase indexing work. Select only locations you actually search. Excluding unnecessary folders is especially useful on systems approaching hundreds of thousands of indexed items.
Start the Windows Search service when indexing is not running
The Settings choice can be correct while the underlying service is stopped. Windows identifies that service as wsearch. Start it from the Services console:

services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Search in the list.
- Open it and set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).
- If Service status is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Delayed start allows core Windows services to load first while still starting Search automatically after boot. If the service was paused during a Windows upgrade, Microsoft advises waiting about five minutes, then checking wsearch again. Do not repeatedly start and stop it during that interval; the service may simply be completing post-upgrade initialization.
If Windows refuses to start the service, note the exact error shown in Services. A permissions or dependency error calls for the troubleshooting sequence below rather than repeated attempts to change the startup type.
Check whether indexing is progressing
After changing the scope or starting the service, test a few known files. Search for a distinctive file name in a folder you selected. Then search for a unique word inside a supported document if content indexing is important to you.

Initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours according to Microsoft’s current support guidance. During that period, result counts may be incomplete and can change as the catalog grows. After the initial pass, Windows updates the index in the background rather than rebuilding it from zero after every file change.

It can slow while the system is busy, wait until the computer is idle, or pause when a laptop is running on battery power. Connect a laptop to AC power, leave it awake, and give it idle time when results remain incomplete.
Rebuild a stale or damaged index
Use a rebuild when the service is running and the correct folders are selected but results are persistently stale, incomplete, or obviously inconsistent. Rebuilding deletes the existing catalog and creates a new one from the selected locations; it does not delete your files.
- Open Control Panel.
- Search for and open Indexing Options.
- Select Advanced.
- On the Index Settings tab, select Rebuild.
- Confirm the prompt and leave the computer powered while Windows recreates the catalog.
Microsoft Learn says a rebuild can take up to 24 hours. That is a maximum guidance window, not a promise that every PC will need a full day. The duration depends on the number of items, storage speed, file types, CPU load, and whether Windows repeatedly yields to active work. Avoid judging the rebuild by the first few minutes.
While rebuilding, searches can return fewer results than usual. Wait for the process to finish before deciding whether the repair worked. If you have a laptop, keep it connected to power and prevent sleep for a suitable period so the pass is not repeatedly interrupted.

Use the built-in troubleshooter and restart SearchHost.exe
If selecting a scope, starting wsearch, and waiting for indexing do not resolve the problem, follow Microsoft’s escalation order.
Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
Open Windows’ troubleshooting settings and run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter. Select the symptoms that match your case, such as files not appearing in search or searches being slow. Apply the recommended fix, restart if requested, and test a known file again.
The troubleshooter is useful when a configuration, permission, or catalog state is preventing normal operation. It does not make an unindexed folder searchable unless you add that folder to the scope.
Restart SearchHost.exe
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Use the process list to find
SearchHost.exe(it may appear under Windows search-related processes). - Select it and choose End task or Restart, depending on the Task Manager command shown.
- Open Start search or File Explorer search again and allow the process to relaunch.
Restarting this process resets the search interface for the current session. It does not replace a damaged index, so continue with a rebuild or the reset procedure if the same failure returns.

Microsoft documents a Windows 11 PowerShell reset procedure named ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1. Use it only after the service, scope, troubleshooter, process restart, and rebuild have failed.

- The reset script requires administrator permissions.
- Follow Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 procedure and run the script from an elevated PowerShell session.
- The reset can temporarily affect result relevance while Windows recreates search data and components.
- Allow time for indexing to settle again before evaluating the results.
Because reset steps can vary with Windows 11 servicing changes, use the current Microsoft instructions for the script rather than copying an old command from an unrelated version. Confirm that the script is intended for Windows 11 and that PowerShell is running with Run as administrator.

Severe corruption confined to one Windows account may require regenerating the Microsoft.Windows.Client.CBS package data and the Search registry key. This is an advanced operation, not a routine indexing toggle.
- Use it only when the documented troubleshooter, process restart, rebuild, and Windows 11 reset procedure have not corrected the issue.
- Create a reliable backup and a recovery option before changing package data or the registry.
- Verify that the failure is account-specific and not caused by a stopped service or an unselected folder.
- Make one controlled change at a time and restart Windows when the procedure calls for it.
Incorrect registry or package changes can damage the user profile or other Windows components. If you cannot identify the affected account data and restore path, stop at the reset procedure and obtain qualified Windows support.

Microsoft reports that the Windows Indexer can handle up to 1 million items. The index database grows considerably beyond 400,000 indexed items, which can increase storage and resource use. These figures describe Microsoft’s guidance for the indexer, not a guarantee of identical performance on every computer.
For a large library, performance usually improves when the index contains only locations you search regularly.
- Prefer Classic if your searches are limited to Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop.
- Use Enhanced when searching across all user folders is worth the additional indexing work.
- In Customize search locations > Modify, remove build output, cache directories, virtual-machine images, and other folders you never search.
- Index file properties when names and metadata are enough; enable content indexing only for file types and folders where in-file searches matter.
- After a major folder change, let Windows process updates while the device is powered and idle.
Do not exclude a folder merely because a search is temporarily empty during a rebuild. First allow the rebuild window to complete and confirm that the folder is selected.
Choose the right fix for the symptom

A practical recovery sequence
For most Windows 11 installations, the shortest safe sequence is:

- Confirm the needed folder under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Choose Classic for standard folders or Enhanced for all user folders.
- Use Customize search locations > Modify for a specific missing directory.
- Check
services.msc; start Windows Search and set it to Automatic (Delayed Start). - Keep the device powered and idle for the initial indexing pass, which can take up to a couple of hours.
- Run Indexing Options > Advanced > Rebuild only when the catalog remains stale or incomplete.
- Allow as long as 24 hours for a rebuild before judging the result.
- If the fault persists, run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, restart
SearchHost.exe, and then use the administrator-only Windows 11 reset procedure.
This sequence restores the setting first, verifies the service second, and rebuilds data only when necessary. It avoids the common mistake of repeatedly rebuilding an index whose real problem is an unselected folder or a stopped service.
