The most reliable workflow is to import the page into Gemini Notebook, ask focused questions for structured notes, then use Gemini Apps or Gemini in Chrome to generate and practice a quiz. Check every important statement against the original page: Google explicitly warns that Gemini Notebook can make mistakes.
Choose the Gemini route that fits your goal
Gemini has several ways to turn web content into learning material. Your best choice depends on whether you need a source-centered workspace, a one-off quiz, a quiz about the page currently open in Chrome, or a continuing learning plan.

Google’s feature names, rollout status and regional availability can change. If a control described below is missing, check the current help pages for notebooks in Gemini Apps, study outputs and quizzes, and Notebook sources.
Before you import a web page
Check what the URL actually contains
Gemini Notebook’s URL importer scrapes the text content of an HTML page. It does not bring in the page’s images, embedded videos or nested webpages. A paywalled page is not supported. If a PDF is reached through a URL, Gemini treats it as a PDF source rather than as ordinary HTML.

That distinction matters for learning. A tutorial whose key information is in a diagram, an interactive chart or a video transcript may produce incomplete notes when you provide only its URL. Use an accessible text version, paste the relevant text, or add a supported file when you have permission to do so. Public YouTube URLs have separate requirements: captions must be available, and only the transcript is imported. Google documents these source behaviors in its source-help page.
Confirm account and platform requirements
- Gemini Notebook and its connected app are available in the Gemini web app and Gemini mobile app, but Google describes a gradual rollout. You may not see the feature immediately.
- Study notebooks are available at gemini.google.com, not in the Gemini mobile app.
- Study notebooks require Keep Activity to be on. When it is off, Google says you cannot create or access study notebooks, and other notebook functions such as autosaving chats, notebook memory and adding Google Drive files are also unavailable.
- Google says notebook source capacity depends on the user’s Google AI plan and describes a maximum of 600 sources. Treat that as plan-dependent rather than a universal limit.
- Google also describes notebooks in the Gemini app on Mac, but says the connected app is not yet available there.
Route 1: Import the page into Gemini Notebook
This is the clearest route when you want notes that remain tied to a particular article and expect to ask follow-up questions later.
- Open Gemini Notebook and create or open a notebook.
- Select Add sources.
- Choose the option for a website URL and paste the page address.
- Wait for the source to finish importing. Google describes a source as a copy or automatically synced version of material imported into the service.
- In notebook chat, select the source if the notebook contains several sources. Name the page in your prompt so Gemini knows exactly which material to use.
- Ask for one focused output at a time, such as a study guide, key terms, a timeline or practice questions.
A narrow request is more useful than “summarize this.” For example:
Using only the source “Introduction to plate tectonics,” create a study guide for a first-year geology student. Include the central claim, five key terms with plain-language definitions, the evidence described by the author, and three common misconceptions. Mark anything the source does not establish.
Notebook chat can answer questions about selected sources, and Google recommends specific questions and naming the source when multiple sources are present. This helps prevent facts from one article being silently blended with another.

Turn the imported page into high-quality notes
Specify the learner and the format
Tell Gemini who will use the notes, how much background they have and what the notes should look like. A useful prompt includes four elements:
- Scope: identify the page or section and prohibit unrelated information.
- Audience: state the course, age or assumed knowledge.
- Structure: request headings, a glossary, a sequence of steps, a comparison table or another concrete format.
- Evidence handling: ask Gemini to distinguish what the source states from an inference or an unanswered question.
Example for exam revision:
Use only the selected web-page source. Make two levels of notes for a high-school learner: first a 120-word overview, then detailed headings in the order the page presents them. Define every technical term, retain dates and numbers with their context, and finish with five questions whose answers can be found directly in the source.

Example for a technical procedure:
Extract the procedure from this page. List prerequisites, each action in order, expected results, failure symptoms and recovery steps. Do not invent commands or settings that are not present in the source.
Ask for retrieval-friendly notes
Notes are easier to study when each item can prompt recall. Ask for short sections rather than a wall of prose. Useful formats include:
- A definition followed by an example and a “why it matters” sentence.
- A chronological timeline with the date, event and source wording that supports it.
- A concept map expressed as parent and child bullets.
- A “known, unclear, verify” list that separates established facts from gaps.
- Short-answer questions immediately after each section, with answers hidden below a divider in your own copy.
Do not ask Gemini to make unsupported learning claims, such as a guaranteed improvement in grades or memory. Google’s documentation provides product guidance, not an educational-effectiveness statistic.

Route 2: Create a quiz or study guide in Gemini Apps
Gemini Apps supports prompts for quizzes, flashcards, practice tests and study guides. Google says a study-guide result opens in Canvas, where you can work with the generated material. Add the source file or relevant material as context when the web page itself is not available to the prompt.
- Open Gemini Apps and start a new chat.
- Add the page’s permitted text or a supported file when necessary.
- Ask for the exact assessment type you want: multiple choice, short answer, flashcards, a practice test or a study guide.
- Specify the number of questions, difficulty, topic boundaries and whether answers should appear immediately or after the questions.
- Open the result in Canvas and edit wording, ordering or omissions before studying.
Use a prompt such as:
Create a 12-question quiz from the attached article only. Use eight multiple-choice questions, two short-answer questions and two application questions. Give four options for each multiple-choice item, identify the correct answer and explain it in one sentence using evidence from the article. Do not test facts absent from the article. Put the answer key after all questions.
For a study guide:
Create a one-page study guide from this source for an introductory learner. Include learning objectives, a section-by-section outline, a five-term glossary, three “compare and contrast” prompts and a final self-check. Flag claims that need confirmation from the original page.
Use the quiz controls deliberately
Google documents quiz options including hints, follow-up questions, additional questions and feedback about strengths and areas needing focus. Use hints when you are learning a new topic; turn them off for a realistic practice test. Request additional questions only after reviewing the first set so repeated wording does not create a false sense of mastery. Feedback is useful for choosing what to revisit, but it is not a substitute for checking the answer against the source.
Route 3: Generate a quiz about the page open in Chrome
Gemini in Chrome can use the current web page as quiz context, which is convenient when you are already reading and do not need a permanent notebook.

- Open the page in Chrome and make sure the relevant content is loaded.
- Open Gemini in Chrome using the available browser control.
- Ask for a quiz about the current page and specify the question type, difficulty and answer format.
- Complete the quiz, then ask for a hint, a follow-up question or feedback on the areas you missed.
Google currently lists this capability in English in India and the United States. Availability can change by account, language and rollout, so a missing control does not necessarily indicate a problem with your page.
Because this route relies on the page currently open, it is less suitable for a multi-source project or a study record you want to revisit later. For that, import sources into Notebook or use a study notebook.
Route 4: Build an ongoing study notebook
A study notebook is designed for a continuing goal rather than a single article. Google describes features such as diagnostic quizzes, personalized bite-sized lessons, progress tracking, flashcards and infographics.
- At gemini.google.com, ensure Keep Activity is enabled.
- Create a study notebook and state one learning goal precisely.
- Add the permitted source material and complete the initial diagnostic activity if offered.
- Use the generated lessons, quizzes and flashcards to identify weak areas.
- Return to the original page whenever an answer or explanation is uncertain.
Choose the goal carefully. Google says the goal cannot be edited after setup; to pursue a different goal, create a new study notebook. This makes separate notebooks sensible for unrelated subjects instead of continually changing one broad workspace.
How to write prompts that produce better questions
Gemini can generate plausible questions that are poorly matched to the source unless you set boundaries. Add these constraints where they matter:

Verify notes and quiz answers before studying
Generated material is a draft, not an authority. Google’s official warning says: “Gemini Notebook can make mistakes and its answers don’t reflect Google’s views.” Apply a source-checking pass before you rely on the output.
- Open the original page beside the generated notes or quiz.
- Check every date, number, name, definition, quotation and cause-and-effect statement.
- Confirm that each quiz answer is supported by the page and that no distractor is accidentally correct.
- Look for omitted qualifiers such as “in this study,” “according to the author,” a geographic limitation or a specific date.
- Correct the Canvas document or notebook response, then regenerate only the faulty section instead of replacing the entire set.
Pay particular attention to pages dominated by graphics, interactive elements, embedded media or content that requires a login. Those are precisely the cases in which URL import may not contain the information a human reader sees.
Reuse and share your study material
When a quiz or study guide is useful, Gemini Apps supports sharing it. You can also add a chat containing study material to a study notebook. Before sharing, remove personal information and verify that you have the right to upload, reproduce and distribute the page’s content. A public URL does not automatically grant permission to copy a full article into a new document or send it to others.

A practical page-to-quiz workflow
For a normal text-based article, use this sequence:
- Import the URL into a Gemini Notebook.
- Ask for a structured guide with terms, claims, examples and unanswered questions.
- Read the guide against the page and correct omissions.
- Ask Gemini Apps for a mixed quiz based only on the verified material, or use Gemini in Chrome for a quick page-context quiz when available.
- Take the quiz without hints.
- Request feedback and a small set of follow-up questions on missed concepts.
- Save the corrected guide and quiz in a study notebook if the topic is part of a longer learning goal.
This sequence keeps source capture, explanation, assessment and correction separate. It also makes the limits of page import visible before an incomplete diagram or paywalled section turns into a misleading study aid.
What Gemini can—and cannot—promise
Gemini can reduce the mechanical work of extracting headings, defining terms and drafting questions from accessible web text. It cannot guarantee that an imported page contains every visual or embedded element, that a generated answer is correct, or that using the tool will improve grades, retention or study time by a measurable percentage. Treat its notes and quizzes as editable learning materials, verify them against the source, and choose the route whose availability and source handling match the page you are studying.
