In Paint, open the Settings gear at the upper right and choose Never, Always, or Ask every time under Include a watermark when content is AI-generated. The setting controls the visible watermark; Microsoft says Cocreator-generated images contain a C2PA manifest, and the available documentation does not establish that turning off the visible mark removes that provenance.
Change the watermark setting in Paint
- Open Paint.
- Select the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Locate Include a watermark when content is AI-generated.
- Choose the behavior you want:
- Never leaves the visible watermark off.
- Always adds it automatically when content is AI-generated.
- Ask every time prompts you to choose when saving.
A Windows 11 Forum tutorial reports that Never is the default. The menu labels and default are documented by that secondary how-to, rather than confirmed on Microsoft’s Paint support page: Windows 11 Forum.
If the setting is missing
The tutorial associates this option with Paint version 11.2601.421.0. Check your installed app version and look for an update through the Microsoft Store. The version threshold comes from the secondary tutorial; Microsoft’s Paint support page does not confirm it, so availability may vary by device or rollout: Microsoft Paint support.

A technology guide describes the visible mark as a small Copilot logo in the image’s lower-right corner, but that placement should not be assumed for every generated or edited image: Windows Central.

Separately, Microsoft Support says, “Images generated with Cocreator will contain C2PA manifest helping users identify that it is an AI generated image.” The available documentation does not establish whether choosing Never removes that manifest or other AI-related metadata. Disabling the visible watermark therefore should not be treated as making an image provenance-free: Microsoft Paint support.
Do not confuse Paint with Microsoft 365 watermark controls
For this Paint preference, use the Settings gear inside Paint—not the Microsoft 365 privacy dashboard. Microsoft’s consumer Microsoft 365 setting covers content generated or altered by AI in Microsoft 365 and is managed through the privacy dashboard for the account: Microsoft privacy dashboard.

For work or school accounts, Microsoft documents image watermark controls under My Account > Data and Privacy > Data options. Video and audio watermark policies are controlled by the organization’s IT administrator. These Microsoft 365 controls are separate from Paint’s in-app setting: Microsoft work or school account privacy settings.
