Short answer: a Kindle’s documented hands-free option is VoiceView, which reads the book aloud and can advance pages automatically. Amazon does not support pairing a phone, keyboard, or mouse as a general Kindle page-turning remote. On Kobo, the official Bluetooth remote works with specific readers, but it is still a dedicated page-turner and therefore does not meet a strict “without a remote” requirement. Neither manufacturer documents a universal phone-to-native-reader control method.

Your practical choice depends on what “remotely” means: audio-guided automatic advancement, a physical accessory, or controlling a separate reading app rather than the Kindle or Kobo eReader itself.

What actually works without buying a page-turner

There are three different ideas often mixed together when people ask how to turn pages remotely:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hands-free reading on the eReader: Kindle VoiceView can read aloud and turn pages as it progresses.
  • A wireless button: an RF clip-on sensor or Kobo’s Bluetooth accessory can send page commands, but both are dedicated physical remotes.
  • Using a phone: a phone may control some separate reading apps or modified software environments, but that is not the same as controlling the native Kindle or Kobo reader.

For a strict no-remote setup, VoiceView is the only clearly documented Kindle route in the material available here. For Kobo, no equivalent universal phone or voice-control method is established.

Using Kindle VoiceView for hands-free page advancement

What VoiceView does

VoiceView is Kindle’s accessibility reader. On supported models it speaks the text and can automatically move to the next page while reading. Amazon also documents two-finger swipes for moving to the next or previous page. This makes it useful when your hands are occupied or you cannot comfortably tap the display, but it does not behave like a silent clicker that another device presses for you.

Check the exact Kindle model first

Kindle features differ by generation. Amazon’s model-identification information lists VoiceView on many generations, while several Oasis generations have physical page-turn buttons. Do not assume that a setting or gesture available on one Kindle exists on another. Identify the model and generation, then check that model’s accessibility documentation before changing settings.

General setup sequence

  1. Identify the reader. Use the Kindle’s device-information screen or Amazon’s model-identification guidance to determine the exact generation.
  2. Open the accessibility controls. On the Kindle, go to the area labeled Accessibility or VoiceView. The wording and location can vary by software version and model.
  3. Enable VoiceView. Follow the on-screen instructions for turning speech on. If the reader asks for an audio output, choose the speaker or a compatible audio device available to your model.
  4. Open the book. Start reading and allow VoiceView to announce the text. When automatic advancement is enabled in the VoiceView controls, the reader proceeds as the spoken content reaches the end of each page.
  5. Use the documented gestures. A two-finger swipe advances to the next page; the reverse two-finger swipe moves to the previous page. Practice the gesture on a page you can easily reopen.
  6. Adjust the reading experience. Change speech or navigation options in VoiceView rather than trying to pair an unsupported Bluetooth clicker.

When VoiceView is a good fit

  • You can listen to the book rather than read silently.
  • You want page advancement without touching the display.
  • You need an accessibility feature instead of an accessory attached to the screen.
  • You can tolerate the reader announcing text, controls, and navigation.

When it is not a good fit

  • You need silent page turns while another person is sleeping or while recording audio.
  • You want to remain visually focused on the page without spoken narration.
  • Your Kindle generation does not provide VoiceView.
  • You need a remote operator to move pages while you continue reading silently.

In those cases, VoiceView solves a different problem from a remote button. A physical accessory or a Kindle model with built-in page buttons may be more appropriate, although neither is a phone-based, no-remote solution.

Why a normal Bluetooth phone or clicker is not a Kindle solution

Bluetooth support on a Kindle does not imply support for every Bluetooth input device. Amazon’s pairing guidance specifically says that pairing a Bluetooth phone, keyboard, or mouse is not supported as a general Kindle control method. A device may appear discoverable or connect for an audio function without gaining commands for next-page and previous-page navigation.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: buying a generic Bluetooth camera shutter, presentation clicker, keyboard, or phone and expecting its buttons to act as Kindle page controls. Unless Amazon documents the exact device and function for your Kindle generation, treat the setup as unsupported rather than plug-and-play.

There are two separate questions to ask before testing any accessory:

  • Can the Kindle pair with it? This concerns the Bluetooth radio and supported profiles.
  • Will the Kindle interpret its buttons as page commands? Amazon’s guidance does not establish that behavior for a phone, keyboard, or mouse.

The RF screen-sensor clip: a workaround that still uses a remote

An RF screen-sensor system places a small sensor clip on the Kindle display. Pressing a button on the matching handheld transmitter causes the clip to simulate a screen touch, usually at the page-turn location. This can turn pages from a short distance and may help when a user cannot reach the display, but it does not satisfy a literal “without a page-turner remote” requirement: the handheld RF controller is still a dedicated remote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify before buying

  • Kindle model and generation: screen dimensions, bezels, and touch behavior differ.
  • Clip placement: confirm that the sensor can sit on the active display area without covering text or interfering with sleep/wake behavior.
  • Direction support: check whether the controller provides only forward turns or both forward and backward commands.
  • Power and charging: verify how the sensor and transmitter are powered and whether batteries are replaceable.
  • Return policy: compatibility is product-specific; a manual describing the category does not prove compatibility with every Kindle generation.

Use the accessory’s own compatibility list and instructions. Do not infer universal Kindle support from the fact that one sensor clip works with one model.

Kobo Remote: exact compatibility and pairing steps

Supported Kobo readers

Kobo lists the following readers for its official Bluetooth Kobo Remote:

  • Clara 2E
  • Clara BW
  • Clara Colour
  • Libra 2
  • Libra Colour
  • Sage
  • Elipsa
  • Elipsa 2E

If your model is not on that list, do not assume that the remote will pair or that its buttons will work. Confirm the reader model and software requirements with Kobo before purchasing.

Pair the remote

  1. Prepare the remote. Insert its single AAA battery according to the battery markings.
  2. Start pairing. Hold the remote’s pairing button for three seconds.
  3. Enable Bluetooth on the Kobo. Open the eReader’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Select the accessory. Find Kobo Remote in the list of available devices and select it.
  5. Test both directions. Open a book and press forward and backward to confirm that each button produces the expected page movement.

Kobo states a connection range of up to 20 meters. Actual range depends on the environment and positioning, so treat 20 meters as the stated maximum rather than a guarantee through walls or at every reading angle.

Battery and connection management

Kobo advises switching Bluetooth off when the remote is not being used to conserve the eReader’s battery. If pairing fails, check that Bluetooth is enabled, place the remote close to the reader, repeat the pairing process, and replace the AAA battery if necessary. These steps address the common failure points Kobo identifies: disabled Bluetooth, a lost pairing, and a depleted battery.

The Kobo Remote is a straightforward answer for readers who want to avoid touching the screen, but it is not an answer to the narrower requirement of using no page-turner remote at all.

Can a phone turn pages on a native Kindle or Kobo?

No universal, manufacturer-supported method is established for both platforms. A phone app can expose controls for its own reading application, and a modified-reader environment may offer functions that the stock eReader software does not. Those are separate use cases.

Before relying on a phone-based method, establish all of the following:

Decision guide for common situations

You want completely hands-free reading

Choose VoiceView on a supported Kindle and accept spoken narration. Verify model support first, then use VoiceView’s automatic advancement and two-finger navigation.

You want silent reading and no accessory

There is no documented universal solution for native Kindle or Kobo software. A Kindle with physical page buttons may remove the need to touch the screen, but operating those buttons still requires reaching the reader.

You want to sit several meters away

A dedicated accessory is the established approach: an RF sensor clip for a compatible Kindle or the official Kobo Remote for a listed Kobo model. Both conflict with a strict no-remote requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already own a Bluetooth clicker

Do not expect it to work with Kindle merely because the Kindle has Bluetooth. Amazon’s unsupported-device guidance covers ordinary phones, keyboards, and mice; a generic clicker has no documented page-control guarantee either.

You are choosing between Kindle and Kobo

Base the decision on the exact model and your willingness to use audio or a physical accessory. Kindle has the documented VoiceView route. Kobo has a documented remote for the eight listed models. Neither platform has a documented universal phone-control method for its native reader.

Troubleshooting checklist

VoiceView does not advance pages

  • Confirm that the Kindle model supports VoiceView.
  • Check that VoiceView is enabled rather than only another accessibility setting.
  • Verify that automatic advancement is enabled in the VoiceView controls.
  • Try the documented two-finger next-page gesture.
  • Check audio output and volume; VoiceView cannot be evaluated reliably if speech is not audible.

A Bluetooth device will not control a Kindle

  • Separate audio pairing from navigation control; a successful connection does not create page commands.
  • Remove the device and stop treating it as a supported remote unless Amazon documents it for your model.
  • Use VoiceView or a model-compatible physical solution instead.

Kobo Remote will not pair

  1. Make sure the reader is one of the supported models.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on in the reader’s settings.
  3. Hold the remote’s pairing button for three seconds.
  4. Move the remote close to the reader and select Kobo Remote when it appears.
  5. Replace the single AAA battery and repeat pairing if the remote is not detected.
  6. After pairing, test both forward and backward buttons in an open book.

An RF sensor clip misses page turns

  • Reposition the clip so its sensor sits where the manual specifies.
  • Check that the clip matches the Kindle’s screen and bezel layout.
  • Replace or recharge the transmitter and sensor batteries as applicable.
  • Consult the listing’s model-specific compatibility information; the category is not universally compatible.

Bottom line

If “without a page-turner remote” means no extra physical controller, use Kindle VoiceView on a supported Kindle and accept audio-driven reading. If you need silent, distance-based page buttons, the documented solutions are physical accessories: an RF screen-sensor system for a compatible Kindle or Kobo’s Bluetooth Remote for the listed Kobo readers. A generic Bluetooth phone, keyboard, mouse, or clicker is not a supported universal Kindle remote, and no universal phone method for controlling the native Kindle and Kobo interfaces is established.
