You can enable built-in spam protection without installing another app. On an Android phone using Google’s Phone app, open Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Caller ID and spam, turn on See caller ID & spam, and optionally enable Filter spam calls. On an iPhone, call controls are at Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification; text filtering is at Messages > Filter > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter.
The exact switches differ by Android version, phone maker, carrier, iOS release, and region. The steps below show what each control does, what you may lose when calls are filtered or silenced, and where to recover legitimate calls and messages.
What the built-in protection actually does
Spam protection is a group of identification, screening, filtering, blocking, and reporting tools rather than one universal switch. Call identification can label a business or suspected spam caller before you answer. Filtering can keep a suspected spam call from ringing. Screening can ask an unknown caller for a name and reason before the call reaches you. Text filtering can move messages from unknown senders into separate folders, while blocking and reporting stop a specific sender and provide feedback to the platform or carrier.

Official platform documentation does not publish a comparable percentage for how many spam calls or texts each system prevents. A call can still be mislabeled, and a legitimate first-time sender can be filtered. Check the relevant history, voicemail, or filtered-message folders until you know how your phone behaves.

Turn on spam call protection on Android
Enable caller identification and spam warnings
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three dots).
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Caller ID and spam.
- Turn on See caller ID & spam.
This allows the Google Phone app to identify businesses and warn you when a number is suspected to be spam. The wording and location can differ on a phone that uses a manufacturer’s dialer instead of Google Phone. If you do not see this menu, update the phone’s dialer or check the manufacturer’s call settings for an equivalent caller-ID or spam option.
Automatically filter suspected spam calls
- Return to Phone > More options > Settings > Caller ID and spam.
- Turn on Filter spam calls, if the switch is offered.
Google says a filtered call remains in your call history, but you do not receive a missed-call notification or a voicemail notification for that call. A caller may still leave a voicemail. Check Phone > Recents and your voicemail regularly, especially after enabling this option, so an important call is not overlooked.
If you need every unknown call to ring, leave See caller ID & spam enabled but keep Filter spam calls off. You will see warnings and can decide whether to answer, reject, or block each call yourself.

Keep the protection current
Install Android and Google Phone updates when they are available. Google identifies current software as a way to receive the latest spam-protection features. On work-managed, older, or heavily customized devices, an administrator or manufacturer may control which options appear.
Protect Android text messages
Use Google Messages for SMS and RCS
Google’s documented spam and fake-call protection works with the apps and services that support it. Use Google Messages as the default SMS/RCS app, then open its spam-protection controls to identify, block, or report suspicious conversations. Menu names vary by release and device, so look for a Spam protection, Block, or Report spam action from the conversation or the app’s settings.
- Open Google Messages.
- Open a suspicious conversation, or press and hold it in the conversation list.
- Choose Block and, when offered, Report spam.
- Review the app’s spam-protection setting so suspected messages can be identified before you respond.
Blocking prevents further messages from that sender in the app. Reporting is separate: it tells the service that the message appears abusive or deceptive. Do not open links, reply with personal information, or use a phone number supplied in a suspicious message before verifying the sender through an independent channel.

Requirements for Google’s fake-call detection combination
Some Google-described fake-call detection requires Android 12 or later, the Phone and Contacts apps, and Google Messages with RCS enabled. If one of those requirements is missing, the related detection feature may not appear or may work differently. RCS availability and controls can also depend on your carrier and country.
Turn on spam call protection on iPhone
Enable business and caller identification
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Phone.
- Choose Call Blocking & Identification.
- Turn on Business Call Identification and any supported call-identification apps listed there.
Apple says identification can come from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, or supported apps. The list you see depends on the services installed and supported in your region. A caller label is identification, not proof that a caller is trustworthy; do not share account credentials, security codes, or payment details solely because a name appears on screen.
Screen or silence unknown callers
For stronger handling of unknown numbers, use the screening or silencing controls in the iPhone Phone settings. With screening, the iPhone can ask an unknown caller for their name and reason before your phone rings, giving you context without immediately answering. With silencing, unknown calls go directly to voicemail instead of ringing.

Availability and exact labels depend on the iOS version and region. Screening is useful when you still want a caller to explain why they are calling. Silencing is quieter, but it requires you to monitor voicemail and the Recents list for calls that were not spam.
Filter spam and unknown texts on iPhone
Turn on Text Message Filter
- Open Messages.
- Tap the Filter button.
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Turn on Text Message Filter.
Apple says unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages can be sorted into Transactions and Promotions folders. This keeps likely receipts, order notices, offers, and other messages from unknown senders out of the main conversation list. The messages are not necessarily deleted; open the filtered folders to review them.

Third-party filtering extensions, when available, can be enabled from the same filtering controls. Install only an extension you trust, and read its privacy description before granting access to messages.

Review filtered folders
Check the filtered folders after enabling the feature and whenever you are expecting a message from a new number. A legitimate delivery driver, clinic, school, bank fraud team, or service technician may be unknown to your Contacts. Move or reply to a legitimate conversation according to the options shown in Messages, and add the sender to Contacts if you expect future messages.

Privacy and data-use choices
Android’s caller-ID and spam feature has an explicit data-use trade-off. Google states: “To use caller ID and spam protection, your phone may need to send information about your calls to Google.” It explains that an unknown caller’s number may be sent to Google to identify a business or determine whether it is spam. If you do not want to use that service, return to the Phone app’s Caller ID and spam settings and turn the feature off. You then lose the associated identification and spam-protection behavior.
On iPhone, the identification source matters. Apple Business Connect, a carrier, or a supported app may supply a label, and each source can have its own data practices. Before enabling an external call-identification or message-filtering extension, inspect its permissions and privacy policy. Built-in filtering does not remove the need to evaluate those optional services.

A call did not ring
- Open the Phone app and check Recents.
- Open voicemail and listen for messages from the missing caller.
- If Android filtered the call, remember that a missed-call or voicemail notification may not have appeared.
- If iPhone silenced the call, return the call from a verified number rather than a number supplied in an unexpected message.
- Save a trusted caller to Contacts and adjust filtering if the problem continues.
A text is missing
- On iPhone, open Messages > Filter and inspect Transactions and Promotions.
- On Android, open Google Messages’ spam or blocked area and inspect reported conversations.
- Verify the sender through the organization’s official website, app, or a phone number you already trust.
- Add the legitimate sender to Contacts and change the filter only as much as necessary.
Troubleshooting when a setting is unavailable
- The Android menu is missing: Confirm that you are using the Google Phone app, update it and Android, and check whether your carrier or manufacturer supplies a different dialer. Some options are unavailable on particular models or regions.
- Filter spam calls is not shown: Keep See caller ID & spam enabled, update the app, and check again. The optional filter is not offered on every device or account.
- Fake-call detection does not work: Check for Android 12 or later, the Phone and Contacts apps, Google Messages as the messaging app, and enabled RCS. Carrier support can still affect behavior.
- Google Messages has no spam controls: Make it the default SMS app, update it, and look for actions on an individual conversation. Labels differ between releases.
- iPhone identification switches are empty: Install or activate a supported carrier or identification source, then return to Call Blocking & Identification. Regional and iOS limitations may prevent a source from appearing.
- iPhone filtering folders are absent: Update iOS where supported, open Messages, tap Filter, and enter Manage Filtering. SMS, MMS, and RCS filtering can depend on the current iOS release.
- A needed message is repeatedly filtered: Review the appropriate folder before disabling all filtering. Add known senders to Contacts and report only messages that are genuinely suspicious.
Report spam instead of only deleting it
Deleting a message removes it from your view but does not necessarily provide a signal about the sender. In Google Messages, use the conversation’s Report spam action when available, alongside blocking. On iPhone, Apple documents in-message spam reporting and an SMS/Call Reporting extension available from Settings > Phone > SMS/Call Reporting. The extension’s availability depends on supported software and services.
Reporting does not guarantee that every future message or call will be blocked. It is most useful when combined with the platform’s identification, filtering, and blocking controls and with regular review of filtered locations.
