Windows 11 can apply your chosen Windows accent color to compatible RGB and LED hardware through Dynamic Lighting. Set the accent in Settings > Personalization > Colors, then open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, and choose the accent-color effect under Effects. The option appears only for supported devices and connection modes; unsupported peripherals continue using their own firmware or vendor software.

What RGB accent-color matching does

Windows has two separate controls. Colors changes the visual accent used by Windows itself, such as highlights, controls and other interface elements. Dynamic Lighting sends lighting instructions to compatible RGB or LED hardware. Changing one page does not automatically change the other.

When a supported device exposes the required lighting controls, Dynamic Lighting can use the Windows accent as the device’s color and can coordinate effects across several connected devices. Microsoft designed the feature around the open HID LampArray standard and its Dynamic Lighting APIs. That is a supported hardware and software path, not a promise that every RGB keyboard, mouse, motherboard, fan or light strip will work.

The exact controls shown under Effects, the devices listed on the page and available connection modes depend on the hardware, firmware and the current Windows 11 build. A device may be listed as compatible while a particular wireless mode is not supported, so check the current Microsoft supported-device list and the manufacturer’s firmware notes for the exact model.

Check these requirements first

  • You are running Windows 11 with Dynamic Lighting available in Settings.
  • The RGB or LED product appears on Microsoft’s current Dynamic Lighting compatibility list. Device categories named by Microsoft include keyboards and keypads, mice, game controllers, general peripherals, scene or area lighting, notification devices, PC chassis components such as RAM, motherboards and fans, wearables, headsets and furniture. A category listing is not approval for every product in that category.
  • The device is connected in a supported way. A model may support wired USB while its wireless connection is not supported.
  • The device has current firmware where the manufacturer provides firmware updates.
  • You have closed, disabled or deprioritized any lighting utility that you do not want controlling the device. Windows and other applications can share lighting control, and a higher-priority controller can override your selected effect.

If the Dynamic Lighting page is missing, or it opens without a device card, do not assume that reinstalling Windows will add support. First compare the exact model and connection mode with Microsoft’s current list, then verify the manufacturer’s firmware and connection requirements.

Step 1: choose the Windows accent color

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Personalization, then Colors.
  3. Find the accent-color setting. Choose Automatic if Windows should select a color from your desktop background.
  4. Choose Manual if you want to select a fixed color. Pick a color from Recent colors or Windows colors, or select View colors to choose a custom shade.
  5. Leave Settings open or note the chosen color; the Dynamic Lighting page reads the current Windows accent when you configure the device effect.

Automatic mode can change the accent when your background changes. If you want predictable lighting, use Manual and select a fixed color. The accent color affects the Windows interface independently of whether any RGB hardware is connected.

Step 2: turn on Dynamic Lighting

  1. In Settings, select Personalization, then Dynamic Lighting.
  2. Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
  3. Connect or reconnect the compatible device and wait for its card to appear near the top of the page. Several cards can appear when multiple supported devices are connected.
  4. If no card appears, keep Dynamic Lighting enabled while you check the compatibility, firmware and connection items listed earlier. A device that works with a manufacturer’s utility is not necessarily a device that Windows Dynamic Lighting can control.

The controls below the device cards are global controls. They apply to connected Dynamic Lighting devices unless a device has its own setting. A device-specific selection takes precedence for that device, which lets you synchronize a group while assigning a different behavior to one peripheral.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: select the accent-matching effect

  1. On the Dynamic Lighting page, select the device card you want to configure, or use the global controls if the same lighting should apply to all compatible cards.
  2. Open Effects.
  3. Choose the option that matches the Windows accent color. The wording and available effects can vary by device; select the accent-color option only when it is shown for that device.
  4. Adjust Brightness and any other color or effect controls that the device exposes.
  5. Watch the hardware while applying the setting. A change on the device confirms that Windows is controlling that lighting channel; no response means you should continue with the priority and compatibility checks below.

Dynamic Lighting can synchronize effects across compatible devices from different manufacturers, but synchronization still depends on each device implementing the supported Windows lighting path. One product may expose several effects while another exposes only a smaller set.

Global settings versus per-device settings

Use global controls when you want a consistent accent across your supported keyboard, mouse, controller, headset or chassis lighting. This is the quickest way to keep a workstation visually consistent as you connect more compatible devices.

Use a device card when one device needs a different brightness, effect or color behavior. A per-device setting overrides the global value for that device, so a single keyboard can remain on accent matching while a headset uses another available effect. If a setting appears to be ignored, check the device card first; it may contain an override that hides the global change.

Where you change it What it controls When to use it
Personalization > Colors Windows interface accent Choose Automatic for a background-derived color or Manual for a fixed/custom color.
Dynamic Lighting global controls All compatible devices without an override Apply one effect, color behavior or brightness level across a group.
Individual device card One selected compatible device Override the global behavior for a keyboard, mouse, controller or other listed device.
Effects The lighting pattern or accent-matching behavior exposed by that device Select the Windows accent option when it is available.

Why the accent option may be unavailable

The hardware is not supported

Dynamic Lighting does not control every product that has RGB LEDs. Microsoft describes supported categories, but support is model-specific. Confirm the exact model in the current compatibility list rather than relying on the product’s general category or a similar model name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection mode is unsupported

Some devices expose Dynamic Lighting over USB but not over a wireless receiver or Bluetooth connection. If the model is listed but absent from Settings, connect it using the supported wired method and check again. Microsoft’s older compatibility announcement also documented wireless limitations, and its model list should not be treated as a current guarantee.

Firmware is too old

Install the latest firmware supplied for the exact device. Firmware can determine whether the hardware implements the HID LampArray behavior Windows expects. After updating, disconnect and reconnect the device, then revisit Dynamic Lighting.

The product is controlled by another application

Windows allows foreground applications and background ambient controllers to participate in lighting control. A vendor utility, game or ambient-lighting service may take control when it is active. In that situation, the Windows accent setting can be correct while the LEDs continue to show the other application’s effect.

Fix lighting that does not change

1. Confirm that Windows can see the device

Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. The device must appear as a card before its brightness or effect controls can work. If it is absent, check the exact model, supported connection and firmware instead of repeatedly changing the color setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check Background light control

Expand Background light control on the Dynamic Lighting page. This area shows controllers that can manage ambient or background lighting and their priority. If another controller is above the Dynamic Lighting controller, Windows may send the device’s lighting commands to that higher-priority controller instead.

3. Move the intended controller to the top

If Windows Dynamic Lighting should control the device, move its controller to the top of the priority order as Microsoft recommends. Then return to Effects and apply the accent-matching option again. Close or disable an application you do not want controlling the LEDs if it keeps reclaiming priority.

4. Test with one compatible device

Disconnect extra RGB devices temporarily and test one supported device. This separates a device-specific problem from a controller conflict. Once the test device responds, reconnect the others and review global and per-device settings.

5. Recheck the USB port

Ambient-control settings are associated with the device and the USB port. Moving a device to another port can therefore create a separate device entry with different settings. If the behavior changes after moving ports, configure the new entry rather than assuming Windows lost the old settings.

6. Restore the desired control model

Turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices when you want the device’s firmware or a manufacturer’s application to control the lights instead. With Dynamic Lighting disabled, devices return to their default non-Dynamic Lighting behavior. Re-enable it when you want Windows to manage the supported lighting path again.

Supported hardware: what the categories mean

Device category Microsoft documents What to verify before expecting accent matching
Keyboards and keypads The exact model and whether wired or wireless operation is supported.
Mice and game controllers That the lighting implementation, not just the input function, is supported.
General peripherals, headsets and wearables That the product appears as a Dynamic Lighting card and exposes an Effects option.
Scene, area and notification lighting Whether the device uses the supported Windows lighting interface and connection.
PC chassis components, including RAM, motherboards and fans Firmware support and whether the component is exposed to Windows through a compatible controller.
Furniture with integrated lighting The exact product entry, connection method and available Windows controls.

These categories are not interchangeable recommendations. If you are buying hardware specifically for Windows accent matching, verify the exact model in Microsoft’s current list, confirm the connection mode you plan to use and check whether the device supports synchronized global control or only its own per-device behavior. A compatible RGB keyboard is sufficient to try the feature; no additional purchase is required if your existing hardware is supported.

How app priority affects shared lighting control

Dynamic Lighting is designed to coexist with applications. A foreground app can request control while it is active, and a background ambient controller can be assigned a priority. This is useful when a game or accessibility tool needs to display its own notifications, but it can make a static Windows accent appear unreliable.

When the lights change as soon as an app launches, close that app and test again. If the accent returns, the app was controlling the device rather than Windows. If you want Windows to remain in charge, adjust Background light control so the Dynamic Lighting controller has the higher priority, and disable the app’s lighting integration when its own settings allow it.

If the device is not selected for background control, it may operate in autonomous mode and follow firmware defaults. That behavior is different from a failed accent match: the hardware is running its own programmed effect instead of receiving a Windows command.

A reliable setup sequence

  1. Use Settings > Personalization > Colors to select Manual and choose a clearly visible accent color.
  2. Connect one device using the connection mode documented for Dynamic Lighting.
  3. Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting and enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
  4. Confirm that the device appears as a card and that its firmware is current.
  5. Open Effects, choose the Windows accent-matching option, and set a visible brightness.
  6. If nothing changes, inspect Background light control and move the Dynamic Lighting controller above competing controllers.
  7. Add other compatible devices, then decide whether global controls or individual cards should govern each one.

This order isolates the three variables that most often cause confusion: the Windows accent itself, device compatibility and control priority.

What to expect after Windows or firmware updates

Microsoft can change Settings labels, supported devices and firmware guidance as Windows 11 evolves. A device that was absent from an older list may gain support later, while a model’s wireless behavior can depend on a firmware revision. Recheck the current Microsoft compatibility list and the manufacturer’s information after a major Windows update or device firmware change.

If a setting disappears after an update, first verify that Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices remains enabled and that the device card still appears. Then review the connection mode and controller priority before resetting the device or reinstalling applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Set the Windows color under Personalization > Colors, enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices under Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, and select the accent-matching effect under Effects. The result depends on exact-model compatibility, firmware, connection type and which controller has priority. When a supported device does not respond, check its card and Background light control before changing anything else.
