The setting depends on your Outlook version. In classic Outlook for Windows (2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016), go to File > Options > Mail and enable Always check spelling before sending. New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web or Outlook.com use Editor while you compose; they do not use that classic pre-send checkbox.
Identify your Outlook version first
Microsoft has two different spell-check workflows. The classic Windows desktop application can interrupt sending and run a check automatically. New Outlook for Windows and browser-based Outlook provide Editor suggestions during composition instead. Looking for the classic checkbox in the newer interfaces will waste time because it is not their documented control.

A quick visual test is the File menu. If you can open File > Options and see a Mail category, you are using classic Outlook. If your compose window has an Editor button and no File > Options path, use the new Outlook or web instructions below.

Classic Outlook desktop: turn on an automatic pre-send check
These steps are the documented method for classic Outlook for Windows 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016.

- Open Outlook and select File.
- Select Options.
- In the Outlook Options window, select Mail.
- Scroll to the Compose messages section.
- Check Always check spelling before sending.
- Select OK if the dialog displays an OK button, then return to your draft.
With that option enabled, selecting Send starts Outlook’s spelling check before the message leaves. If Outlook finds no spelling mistakes, it sends the message immediately. That immediate send is expected; there is no extra confirmation just because the check ran.
Return to the draft instead of sending
If the check opens a spelling result and you want to edit the message rather than complete the send, select Cancel and then select No when Outlook asks whether to return to editing. You can correct the draft and select Send again.
Run a check manually in classic Outlook
For a one-time check, or for a classic installation that does not offer Editor, open the draft and select Review > Spelling & Grammar. This manual command is useful when you do not want every message to trigger a check, when you are reviewing a saved draft, or when the automatic option is unavailable in your edition.
What the classic setting does not do
The checkbox is a pre-send spelling check, not a guarantee that every writing problem will be detected. Names, product terms, numbers, URLs, and correctly spelled words used in the wrong context may still need a human review. Outlook can also treat an unfamiliar proper name as an error even when the name is intentional.

New Outlook for Windows: use Editor while composing
New Outlook does not use the classic Always check spelling before sending control. Instead, review the draft with Editor before you send it.
- Open a new message or an existing draft.
- Select Editor on the Message tab. In some ribbon layouts, Editor is in the ribbon’s overflow menu instead.
- Review the Editor pane for spelling, grammar, and style suggestions.
- Select a suggestion to apply it, dismiss it, or leave the original wording when it is intentional.
- Read the complete message once more, then select Send.
Editor can also mark possible issues directly in the message body with underlines. If you do not see the pane, open Editor from the Message tab or the overflow menu rather than searching for the classic Options dialog.
Choose which suggestions Editor shows
While the draft is open, select Editor > Editor Settings. Turn suggestion types on or off and select OK. This lets you reduce distractions, for example by changing which grammar or style suggestions appear while retaining spelling suggestions.

Open Editor Settings > Manage spellcheck languages and choose the language you need. In new Outlook, a proofing-language choice made while composing applies only to that specific email draft. If you start another message in a different language, check its proofing-language setting again rather than assuming the previous draft’s choice carried over.

Outlook on the web and Outlook.com
Browser-based Outlook uses the same Editor-style workflow rather than the classic desktop checkbox.
- Sign in to Outlook on the web or Outlook.com and start a new message or open a draft.
- On the Message tab, select Editor. Depending on the ribbon layout, open the overflow menu to find it.
- Review the suggestions in the Editor pane or the underlines in the message body.
- Use Editor > Editor Settings to control suggestion types.
- Use Editor Settings > Manage spellcheck languages when the draft is written in another language.
- After reviewing the message, select Send.
There is no documented classic-style “always check when Send is selected” checkbox in the web interface. To make a final check part of your routine, open Editor immediately before sending each important message.
Automatic checking versus Editor review
The practical difference is whether Outlook interrupts the send action or expects you to review suggestions during composition.

Set up a reliable pre-send routine
Spell check catches spelling candidates, but a short final review catches mistakes that automated tools cannot reliably identify. Use the routine that matches your Outlook version:

- Confirm the language. If the message is not in your usual language, open Manage spellcheck languages before reviewing it.
- Run the version-appropriate check. In classic Outlook, select Send with the automatic option enabled, or use Review > Spelling & Grammar. In new or web Outlook, open Editor.
- Resolve intentional exceptions carefully. A person’s name, technical term, or organization may be correct even when Outlook flags it.
- Read the message in context. Check dates, amounts, addresses, attachments, links, and the recipient line manually; spelling tools do not establish whether those details are correct.
- Send only after the review. In classic Outlook, choose Cancel and then No if you need to return to editing during the send-time check.
When the instructions do not match your screen
You cannot find File > Options
You are probably in new Outlook for Windows or a browser session. Use Editor from the Message tab or the overflow menu. The classic checkbox belongs to the classic desktop application and will not appear in those interfaces.
You cannot find Editor in new Outlook
Ribbon layouts can move Editor into the overflow menu. Open the menu represented by the additional commands indicator and look for Editor there. If the new Outlook steps still do not work, Microsoft advises selecting the classic Outlook instructions; the application may actually be classic Outlook or an edition with different feature availability.
The Editor pane is open, but no spelling suggestions appear
Open Editor > Editor Settings and verify that spelling suggestions are enabled. Then check Manage spellcheck languages and choose the language used by the current draft. In new Outlook, that language selection is limited to the draft being composed, so a different message may require a new selection.

In classic Outlook, return to File > Options > Mail and confirm that Always check spelling before sending is checked under Compose messages. If that path is missing, stop looking for the checkbox and use the Editor workflow for new Outlook or the web. Also remember that a message with no spelling mistakes sends immediately; the absence of a dialog in that case is normal.

Your classic edition has no Editor button
Some classic versions do not include Editor. Use Review > Spelling & Grammar for a manual check, or enable the automatic pre-send checkbox when it is available in your Outlook Options.
Edition and platform limits
Microsoft’s documented automatic-setting instructions specifically name classic Outlook for Windows 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. The Editor instructions cover new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web or Outlook.com. The guidance summarized here does not establish a separate Outlook for Mac menu path, so do not assume that Windows commands such as File > Options > Mail apply to the Mac application.
Menu placement can change with ribbon layout, but the functional distinction remains: classic Outlook has an explicit automatic check at send time, while new and web Outlook rely on Editor during composition. Selecting the workflow for the application actually on your screen is the key to preventing spelling errors from being sent.
