To turn on Google Messages spam protection, open Messages, tap your profile picture or initials, choose Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection, and enable Enable spam protection. The feature filters messages that Google identifies as suspected spam and places filtered conversations in Spam & blocked. It is not a universal switch that blocks every number outside your contacts, so use the separate block-and-report control for a sender you want to stop reliably.
This guide explains the current controls, what each one actually does, why some unknown messages can still appear, how to recover a legitimate conversation, and what to expect from Google’s newer Enhanced protection rollout.
Turn on spam protection
Use this path in the Google Messages app on an Android phone:

- Tap your profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Open Protection & Safety.
- Tap Spam protection.
- Turn on Enable spam protection.
The Spam protection entry is shown only when Google says the feature is available on that device. If the entry is missing, there is no separate hidden switch that can be forced through this menu; availability is controlled by Google and the device’s software configuration.

Check whether it was enabled automatically
Google Messages can turn spam protection on automatically. Google says the app notifies you when that happens, and the same Enable spam protection control lets you turn it off. If the switch is already on, no additional setup is needed.
What to do if the menu labels differ
Google can change labels and distribute protection features in stages. Look for a section named Protection & Safety in Messages settings; on a device that supports the classifier, the spam control appears inside it. Do not assume that a missing Hide international messages or Enhanced protection option means ordinary spam protection is unavailable—those are separate, more limited controls.
What Google Messages spam protection does
Spam protection is a classifier, not a blanket rule based only on whether a sender is saved in Contacts. When Google Messages detects suspected spam, it can prevent the message from being delivered to the normal inbox and hide the conversation in Spam & blocked. The decision is made per message or conversation, so a legitimate message from an unfamiliar number can still be delivered and a message from a number you recognize can potentially be classified incorrectly.

Google describes a combination of machine-learning models that run on the device and URL checking when a message contains a link. Device-side detection can operate without a data connection. Link analysis adds another signal for messages that contain a web address, but it does not turn every message with a link into spam automatically.
The result is intended to reduce exposure to likely scams and bulk messages while leaving ordinary conversations available. Because it is a risk assessment, it cannot promise that every unwanted message will be caught or that every unknown sender will be hidden.
What happens to filtered conversations
Messages that are stopped are placed in Spam & blocked rather than being silently deleted. That folder is also where conversations you block or report are stored. Keeping the conversation there gives you a way to inspect a false positive and restore it if necessary.
Screen unknown senders without confusing that with spam blocking
Google Messages does not provide a universal, Google-documented switch that blocks every sender who is not in your Contacts. Unknown-sender handling is split among several controls with different purposes.

Use the Known and Unknown filter to separate the inbox
In the inbox search box, use the Known and Unknown filter to view conversations from people saved in Contacts separately from conversations whose numbers are not saved. This is an organization and discovery tool: it helps you find unfamiliar senders, but it does not itself block, delete, or report them.
That distinction matters when you are trying to stop interruptions. Filtering the view changes what you see in the list; it does not prevent a new message from arriving.
Leave spam protection enabled for suspected spam
The main classifier is the broadest automatic control. It is designed to identify suspected spam, and unknown numbers can be among the messages it evaluates. It still uses message signals rather than a simple “not in Contacts” rule, so some unknown senders will remain visible.
Block and report an individual sender
For a sender you want to stop, touch and hold the conversation, tap Block, and confirm. Reporting the conversation as spam also blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked. This is the dependable per-sender action when automatic classification has not stopped a particular number.

Hide international messages where the feature is supported
On supported devices, open Profile picture > Messages settings > Protection & safety > Hide international messages. Google’s current documentation says this control works only with a Singapore SIM card. When available and enabled, it moves messages from international numbers that are not in your Contacts to Spam & blocked.
The Singapore-SIM requirement is a current availability condition, not a general Android setting. If you use a SIM from another country, the option may be absent or may not be usable.

Block or report a message that keeps getting through
Spam protection is automatic and probabilistic. If a particular sender continues to reach the inbox, use the explicit conversation action:

- In Google Messages, locate the conversation from the unwanted sender.
- Touch and hold the conversation until the action bar appears.
- Tap Block and confirm.
- If the message is spam, choose the report-as-spam option when it is offered. Reporting both blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked.
Use this action for a sender-specific decision rather than trying to make the automatic classifier behave like a contacts-only allowlist. A sender can change numbers, so repeat the action for a new conversation if the same campaign reappears from a different number.
Find Spam & blocked and restore a legitimate message
Filtered, blocked, and reported conversations are kept in the Spam & blocked area. Open that folder when you are expecting a message that never appeared in the main conversation list or when you want to review a false positive.
Unblock and return a conversation to the inbox
Open the conversation in Spam & blocked and use the available Unblock or Move to inbox action. Google says that unblocking removes the spam report and returns the conversation to the Home screen.
Mark a conversation as not spam
If the thread was incorrectly flagged, use the conversation’s Not spam action when it is available. Google says that this sends information about the removed flag to Google to improve classification. Do not use the action for a message you merely want to archive: it is a feedback signal about the spam decision.
Check the folder before assuming the sender was blocked
A missing conversation is not proof that the sender was blocked manually. Automatic filtering can place a thread in Spam & blocked without any action from you. Reviewing the folder distinguishes a filtered message from a delivery failure or a problem with the sender’s number.
Why messages from unknown numbers can still appear
Spam protection is not an all-unknown-senders switch
The classifier looks for suspected spam rather than simply checking whether a number is saved in Contacts. An unfamiliar number can therefore pass the classifier and remain in the inbox. If you need to stop that specific sender, blocking the conversation is the appropriate control.
The Known and Unknown filter only changes the view
Using the inbox filter to display unknown senders does not suppress future messages. It is useful for reviewing conversations, but it is not a screening rule that rejects delivery.

International filtering is limited by region
The dedicated international control is documented for Singapore SIM cards only. On other devices, international messages are handled by ordinary spam detection unless you block or report the individual conversation.
Feature rollout can make menus look different
Protection controls are not guaranteed to appear identically on every Android phone. Google’s documentation makes availability conditional for spam protection, and newer options are distributed in stages. An absent menu can therefore reflect device or rollout status rather than a mistake in the steps.

On October 14, 2026, Google announced an opt-in Enhanced protection mode for Google Messages. The announcement describes Scam Detection for conversations with unknown senders. Google says the mode combines on-device detection with Private AI Compute cloud analysis so that complex message context and a scammer’s intent can be evaluated more quickly during a conversation.
Google said Enhanced protection would roll out in the coming weeks. Because that is a staged rollout, do not assume the control is present on every phone on the same date. If your device has it, look for the Enhanced protection setting within the Messages safety or protection controls and follow the on-screen enrollment instructions. If it is absent, ordinary spam protection and the manual block/report actions remain the available controls.
Enhanced protection is an additional scam-screening mode, not a replacement definition for “unknown sender.” Its purpose is to analyze suspicious conversational context; it does not establish a universal rule that every unsaved number is blocked.

Google says spam information may be sent anonymously to improve protection. It also says the service may ephemerally process unencrypted message contents for spam detection. “Ephemeral” describes temporary processing for the detection task, not a promise that every message is permanently stored or that no service-side processing occurs.
RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted when RCS is enabled. That encryption status is specific to eligible RCS conversations; it should not be generalized to every SMS or MMS message or to every message exchanged with a non-RCS participant.

Device-side machine-learning detection can work without a data connection. URL checking and any cloud-assisted analysis described for newer protection modes can involve additional processing conditions, so a lack of connectivity does not mean every protection signal is available in the same way.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
The Spam protection option is missing
- Confirm that you opened the Google Messages app, not the phone’s general notification settings.
- Open your profile menu and look for Protection & Safety under Messages settings.
- If Spam protection is still absent, treat that as an availability limitation for the device or rollout. Google says the item appears only when the feature is available.
Spam messages still reach the inbox
- Verify that Enable spam protection is on.
- Look in Spam & blocked to see whether other messages are being filtered.
- For the conversation that remains, touch and hold it and use Block; report it as spam when appropriate.
- Do not rely on the Known and Unknown filter to stop delivery; it only changes the list view.
A legitimate message was filtered
- Open Spam & blocked and inspect the conversation.
- Use Unblock, Move to inbox, or Not spam, depending on the actions shown on your device.
- After restoring it, expect future messages from that sender to be evaluated again; restoration is not a guarantee that every future message will bypass protection.
Hide international messages is unavailable
Google currently documents that feature only for devices using a Singapore SIM card. If your phone uses another region’s SIM, use spam protection plus per-conversation blocking and reporting instead.
Enhanced protection is not visible
Google announced the feature on October 14, 2026 and described a rollout over the coming weeks. Check again after the feature reaches your device, but do not disable ordinary spam protection while waiting for it.

Choose a practical setup
For general protection with minimal maintenance
Enable spam protection and leave it on. Check Spam & blocked occasionally, especially when an expected message does not arrive. This uses automatic classification without requiring you to maintain a list of every unwanted number.
For a sender you never want to hear from again
Block the conversation and report it as spam if the content is unsolicited. That combination is more decisive than waiting for the classifier to recognize the next message.
For reviewing all unfamiliar conversations
Use the Known and Unknown filter in the inbox search box. Review unknown conversations there, then block or report individual threads that are unwanted. Remember that the filter organizes the inbox; it does not create a contacts-only delivery policy.
For supported Singapore devices with international-message problems
Enable Hide international messages in Protection & safety if the option is offered. Messages from international numbers not saved in Contacts will be moved to Spam & blocked, where you can inspect and restore a legitimate conversation.
For users offered Enhanced protection
Read the on-device explanation and opt in only if the additional Scam Detection behavior suits your needs. Availability and exact prompts can vary during the staged rollout, so follow the controls shown on your phone rather than assuming every device has the same menu.
