Word has two separate dark-mode controls: one changes the menus and ribbon, while the other changes the document canvas you see while editing. You can use both, or keep the interface dark while leaving the page white.
The instructions differ between Word on Windows, Mac, and the web. They also depend on your Word version: the modern dark document canvas is supported in Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021. Word 2019 and Word 2016 are not listed by Microsoft as supporting the current Switch Modes feature.
Dark Mode in Word: interface versus document page
Before changing anything, distinguish between these two settings:

Dark Mode is a personal viewing preference. It does not change how the document appears for collaborators, and the dark editing canvas does not make Word print the document with a black page.

Turn on Dark Mode in Word for Windows
1. Change the Office interface to dark
- Open Word.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Open the Office Theme drop-down menu.
- Select Black.
This changes the Word interface to the darkest Office theme. If you want Office to follow Windows’ light or dark appearance, select Use system setting instead.
Depending on your Microsoft 365 build, you may also find the same setting here:
File > Options > General > Office Theme
2. Turn on the dark document page
- Open the View tab.
- Select Switch Modes.
The page background changes to dark and the text colors are adjusted for editing against it. Select Switch Modes again whenever you want to return to a light page.
Word remembers this page-display choice for later Dark Mode sessions.
Keep Word’s menus dark but leave the page white
If you like a dark ribbon but find a dark page distracting, you can disable the dark document canvas:
- Select File.
- Select Options.
- Select General.
- Find the settings under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office.
- Select Never change the document page color.
- Select OK.
Word will retain the dark Office interface but display the document page with a light background.

Turn off Dark Mode completely in Word for Windows
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Open the Office Theme menu.
- Select White, Colorful, or Dark Gray.
White gives you the lightest interface. Colorful adds application colors to the interface, while Dark Gray provides a darker alternative without using the full Black theme.
If the page is still dark, select View > Switch Modes. Alternatively, enable Never change the document page color through File > Options > General.
Turn on Dark Mode in Word for Mac
Word for Mac follows the macOS appearance setting by default.
Enable dark appearance in macOS
- Select the Apple menu.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Select Dark.
On older versions of macOS, use Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Appearance > Dark.
You can select Auto instead if macOS should switch between light and dark according to its schedule.

Turn off Dark Mode only in Word
To keep macOS dark but make Word light:
- In Word, select Word in the macOS menu bar.
- Select Preferences.
- Select General.
- Under Personalize, select Turn off Dark Mode.
This applies to Word. Other Microsoft 365 apps need to be configured separately.

Change the Mac document page between dark and light
With Dark Mode active, open the View tab and select Switch Modes. This changes the displayed page background without applying a permanent page color to the document.
Keep the interface dark but the page white
- Select Word > Preferences.
- Select General.
- Under Personalize, select Dark Mode has a white page color.
Turn on Dark Mode in Word for the web
Word for the web can follow the dark theme configured in your operating system or browser. If it does not switch automatically:
- Open a document in Word for the web.
- Open the View tab.
- Select Dark Mode.
To change only the document page background, select View > Switch Backgrounds. Word for the web also provides a Switch to light background control near the bottom-right of the status bar.
Turn off Dark Mode on the web
Open the document and select View > Dark Mode. This toggles the web interface between dark and light.
Do not confuse the two web controls:
- Dark Mode changes the web interface.
- Switch Backgrounds changes only the displayed document page.
Why can’t I find Switch Modes?
Microsoft currently lists the modern dark document canvas for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021. If you use Word 2019 or Word 2016, you may be able to apply a dark Office theme, but the current dark page and Switch Modes control should not be assumed to be available.
Also check whether your installation is an older build or managed by an organization. Company policies and update schedules can affect which controls appear.

Common Dark Mode problems
Windows is dark, but Word is still light
Windows’ appearance setting and Word’s Office theme are separate unless Word is configured to follow the system. In Word, go to File > Account > Office Theme and select Black, or select Use system setting.
The ribbon is dark, but the page remains white
A dark interface does not automatically mean the dark document canvas is enabled. Select View > Switch Modes. If you deliberately want a white page, leave it as it is or enable Never change the document page color.
Pasted text appears on a white block
Text copied from another application may bring a white background or black text into a dark document view. Paste without the source formatting:
- Windows: press
Ctrl+Shift+V, or useCtrl+Vand choose Paste Text Only. - Mac: press
Cmd+Shift+V, or useCmd+Vand choose Paste Text Only.
Some areas still look light or incorrect
Dark Mode does not adapt every Word component perfectly. Some side panes and dialog boxes may remain light. Charts, text boxes, equations, and other embedded elements may also appear differently. Ink colors may not update until a pen stroke is complete.
Word for the web does not remember my setting
Word for the web remembers the preference for each unique browser. If the choice disappears, check the browser’s cookie settings. Cookies must be enabled for the preference to persist.
Dark Mode settings do not match between my devices
Word does not use one shared Dark Mode switch across Windows, Mac, and the web. Configure each platform separately. A setting in desktop Word does not necessarily carry over to Word for the web.

Dark Mode does not change printing
The dark page shown while editing is a temporary viewing canvas. Microsoft says it does not represent the printed result. Before checking how a document will print or look when shared, switch the editing page back to light:
- Windows or Mac: View > Switch Modes
- Word for the web: View > Switch Backgrounds
If you intentionally need a document with a colored page, use Design > Page Color. That is document formatting, not Dark Mode, and it should not be used as the normal way to enable a dark editing view.

Does Word have a dark document page?
Yes. Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021 support a dark document canvas. Enable the interface theme first, then use View > Switch Modes on Windows or Mac.

Does Word Dark Mode make the document print black?
No. The dark page is a viewing preference. Word uses the document’s light page color for printing unless you deliberately apply a page color through Design > Page Color.
Will collaborators see my document in Dark Mode?
No. Dark Mode is a per-user display preference. Other people see the document according to their own Word settings.
What is the difference between Switch Modes and Page Color?
Switch Modes changes the page background shown temporarily while you edit. Design > Page Color applies document formatting and can become part of the document’s appearance.
Can I keep Word dark but use a white page?
Yes. On Windows, use File > Options > General > Never change the document page color. On Mac, use Word > Preferences > General > Dark Mode has a white page color.

Some Word components do not fully adapt to Dark Mode. Charts, equations, text boxes, side panes, dialog boxes, and ink can have different colors or remain partly light.
The Bottom Line
For desktop Word, set File > Account > Office Theme > Black, then use View > Switch Modes if you also want a dark editing page. To keep the page white, enable Never change the document page color on Windows or Dark Mode has a white page color on Mac. Word for the web uses View > Dark Mode and View > Switch Backgrounds.
