To turn on subtitles, start a Netflix title, open the playback controls, choose Audio & Subtitles (or the language controls shown on your device), and select a track. To change how subtitles look, use Netflix’s Subtitle appearance profile setting in a web browser, or the more limited in-player settings on a compatible TV or Android device. The exact languages and appearance controls depend on the title, season or episode, device, language and, in some cases, country.
This guide follows Netflix’s current help guidance for subtitle selection, appearance controls and troubleshooting: subtitle and audio-language controls, subtitle appearance, appearance troubleshooting and oversized subtitles.
Turn on subtitles while a title is playing
Netflix chooses subtitle tracks from the playback screen, not from a single account-wide language switch. Start the show or movie first, then open its player controls. The control is usually labeled Audio & Subtitles; on some televisions, the available languages appear along the bottom without that icon.

- Start playback. Open Netflix and play the show or movie.
- Open the playback controls. Tap or click the picture on a phone, tablet or computer. On most smart TVs, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game systems and streaming media players, press the remote’s up or down arrow. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the up arrow.
- Open the language menu. Select Audio & Subtitles at the top or bottom of the player. If your TV shows language choices directly, open that row instead.
- Choose a subtitle track. Select a displayed language. If the interface offers Other, open it to see additional choices, then select the subtitle or caption track you want.
Netflix only lists languages available for that particular title. A language used in one series may not be offered in another, and availability can change between seasons or individual episodes. If a character speaks a language different from the title’s original language, Netflix may display translated dialogue even when your subtitle setting is off. That behavior is separate from turning on a full subtitle track. Netflix explains these title-specific controls in its subtitle and audio-language help page.

Subtitles, captions and SDH are not identical
A standard subtitle track generally translates spoken dialogue. Captions can also identify relevant non-speech audio, such as a doorbell or music cue. Netflix may label a descriptive track SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing). Look for an SDH badge on the title’s details page when you need that type of track.
SDH is not guaranteed for every season or episode. If an SDH option is missing from one episode, check the details and language menu for that specific episode rather than assuming the setting is broken.

Customize subtitle appearance in a web browser
The browser route provides Netflix’s broadest documented set of appearance controls. It is a profile-level setting rather than a control attached to only one episode.

- Select Profiles.
- Choose the profile you use for viewing.
- Select Subtitle appearance.
- Adjust the available font, size, shadow and background color options.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on the device where you watch. If it is a TV or streaming device and the new style does not appear, reload the Netflix app using the procedure in the troubleshooting section below.
Netflix documents these browser controls in How to change the appearance of subtitles and closed captions. The page describes the setting as profile-based, but the receiving device still has to support the selected presentation. A television may expose fewer choices than the browser, and an older device may not render every selected option.

What each browser control changes
- Font: Changes the typeface used for the subtitle text when the playback device supports that choice.
- Size: Increases or decreases the text. If subtitles remain unusually large, check both Netflix and the device’s accessibility settings.
- Shadow: Adds or changes the text shadow, which can separate letters from bright or detailed video.
- Background color: Adds a colored field behind the text. A background can improve contrast, but its exact rendering depends on the device.
Change appearance from a TV or streaming device
Many connected-TV interfaces offer a smaller set of controls directly in the player. Netflix’s documented path is:
- Start a title and pause playback.
- Open the player controls.
- Select Settings, if it is shown.
- Adjust Size and Style.
- Resume playback to see the result.
If Settings does not appear, that device does not support changing appearance for the selected language. Connected TVs generally offer fewer controls than a browser, so the absence of a font, shadow or background option does not mean your account setting failed. It may simply be a device or language limitation. Netflix describes these restrictions in its appearance-settings guidance.
Change appearance in the Netflix Android app
On an Android phone or tablet, appearance changes are made inside the Netflix app and are saved automatically:

- Tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to change.
- Tap Subtitle Appearance.
- Choose the available appearance options. The changes save automatically.
To undo the Android choices, return to Subtitle Appearance and select Restore Default Settings. Netflix states that Android appearance changes apply only to titles played on that Android device. They should not be treated as a universal replacement for the browser profile setting.

If the Android style does not show after saving, Netflix recommends switching to another profile and then switching back to the original profile. This refreshes the profile state without deleting it.
Apple devices: use the device-specific Apple instructions
Netflix’s appearance help page directs users of Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to Apple Support for the Apple-specific subtitle-appearance procedure. The Netflix page does not provide one universal menu path for all three devices, so the controls and names can differ by hardware and operating-system version. Use the Apple instructions for the exact device rather than applying the Android or TV steps.
You can still select a subtitle track from Netflix playback controls on Apple TV by swiping up or pressing the up arrow, then choosing the available language. Track availability remains title-specific even when appearance is controlled by the Apple device.

When a subtitle language or SDH option is missing
The title does not offer that language
Netflix generates the menu from the tracks supplied for the title. Check the language list while the episode or movie is playing and use Other where that option appears. There is no account setting that can create a track the title does not provide.

The option is missing from only one episode or season
Availability can vary within a series. Check the individual episode and look for the SDH badge on the details page if you need captions that include sound descriptions. A missing SDH track in one episode is not proof that the entire show lacks SDH.
Dialogue is translated even though subtitles are off
Netflix notes that dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language can trigger translated subtitles. This is expected behavior for that dialogue and is different from enabling the title’s complete subtitle track.

Smart TV or streaming device
- Return to the Netflix home screen.
- Open Get Help.
- Select Reload (the menu may identify this as reloading Netflix).
- Play the title again and check the subtitle style.
Netflix recommends this reload when a saved browser appearance change has not reached a TV or streaming device. If the TV has no appearance Settings control for the language, reloading cannot add unsupported options.

Android phone or tablet
Switch to another Netflix profile, then switch back to the profile whose appearance you changed. Reopen the title and test the subtitle display. If the problem continues, verify that you changed Subtitle Appearance inside the Netflix Android app, not only a device-wide accessibility preference.

Other devices
Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance says it is investigating appearance problems on other devices and asks users to contact Netflix support. Have the device type, title, profile and the exact appearance option that failed available when you contact support. The relevant troubleshooting page is Subtitle and caption appearance doesn’t change.
Why subtitles may be too large
Two independent settings can enlarge text: Netflix’s subtitle appearance setting and the device’s accessibility setting. If the result is larger than expected, check both places. On a phone, tablet, TV or streaming player, the device-level accessibility change may affect other apps as well, so adjust it only if you want a system-wide change.
Netflix’s specific guidance for this symptom is in Subtitles are too large. Changing the Netflix size and the device setting separately lets you identify which layer is responsible instead of repeatedly changing the same control.
Country, language and device limitations
- Netflix says subtitle-appearance settings are unavailable in some countries where Arabic or Hebrew are primary languages, even if the profile itself is set to another language.
- Some older devices may not display every setting selected in the browser.
- Some TV devices do not support appearance changes for particular languages.
- Connected TVs do not expose all of the browser’s font, size, shadow and background controls.
These limitations affect appearance customization, not necessarily the existence of a subtitle track. Keep the two questions separate: first check whether the title supplies the language or SDH track; then check whether the device can render the appearance you want.
Kids profiles and saved preferences
Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences are not saved when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. The preferences are saved when those titles are watched from a Kids profile. If a language choice seems to reset only for children’s content, confirm which profile is active before changing the appearance or playback setting.
A practical setup for readable subtitles
For the greatest control, make the initial adjustment in a web browser: choose a readable font, a size you can follow from your normal viewing distance, and enough shadow or background contrast to separate text from the picture. Then test the same profile on the TV, phone or tablet where you actually watch. If the TV offers only Size and Style, use those device controls rather than expecting every browser choice to appear.
When a style still looks wrong, test one variable at a time. First verify the selected subtitle track, then check Netflix’s appearance setting, then check the device accessibility setting. This sequence distinguishes a missing title track from a rendering limitation and from a second size control enlarging the text.
