You can strengthen a Mac safely if you configure protections in the right order: plan FileVault recovery first, enable the firewall with app connectivity in mind, use Lockdown Mode only for a credible targeted-threat concern, and leave startup security at its default unless compatibility requires a change. The setting that can permanently strand your files is FileVault when both your login recovery method and recovery key are unavailable.
Apple’s menu names can differ slightly between macOS releases. If a path below does not match your Mac, use the similarly named control in System Settings and check the Mac Help instructions for your installed version.
Choose the protection that matches the problem
These controls address different failure modes. FileVault protects data stored on the Mac; the firewall filters unwanted incoming network connections; Lockdown Mode reduces selected attack surfaces at the cost of convenience; startup security controls which operating systems and components the Mac will trust during boot.

Identify your Mac before changing anything
Hardware determines which safeguards already exist. Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip encrypt storage automatically. On those systems, enabling FileVault still matters because it requires the login password before the encrypted data can be unlocked. An Intel Mac without Apple silicon or T2 needs FileVault turned on to encrypt its data.

Startup controls also differ. Apple silicon uses Startup Security Utility from macOS Recovery. Intel Macs may offer a firmware password, but Apple states that this feature is Intel-only and is not supported on Apple silicon. Do not treat an Intel firmware password as an equivalent switch to Apple silicon startup policy.
To check the model, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Note whether the processor is identified as Apple silicon or Intel, and whether the Mac is managed by an employer or school. Management can determine how recovery keys and startup settings are administered.
FileVault: prepare recovery before encryption
FileVault is the setting most likely to create an irreversible access problem, so decide how you will recover the account before you turn it on. Apple’s warning is explicit: “If you turn on FileVault and then forget your login password and can’t reset it, and you also forget your recovery key, you won’t be able to log in, and your files and settings will be lost forever.”

Choose a recovery route
When FileVault is enabled, macOS offers an Apple Account recovery option or a generated recovery key. Choose one only after confirming that you can actually use it.
- Apple Account recovery: Use this when the Mac’s Apple Account is available to you and its password and account-recovery methods are current. The account becomes the route for resetting access if you forget the Mac login password.
- Separate recovery key: Use this when you want an offline secret that is independent of the Apple Account. Copy every character exactly as displayed and store the key somewhere other than the encrypted startup disk and away from the Mac itself.
- Managed Mac: Stop at this point and ask the organization’s administrator how FileVault recovery is handled. Do not create an improvised personal process on a work or school computer; an administrator may escrow or manage the key.
A recovery key is not a password hint. Anyone who obtains it may be able to unlock the encrypted data, so treat it like a high-value secret. A copy in a drawer beside the Mac does not provide useful separation if the computer and the paper are stolen together.

Turn on FileVault
- Sign in with an administrator account and save your work.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, then FileVault.
- Choose Turn On.
- Select either Apple Account recovery or the generated recovery-key option.
- If macOS displays a recovery key, transcribe it exactly, verify the copy, and store it in a secure location separate from the Mac.
- Follow the restart or sign-out prompt and leave the Mac connected to power while encryption preparation proceeds.
Do not proceed past the recovery choice until you know where the account route or key is stored. If you later discover that the key is missing, do not assume another administrator account can substitute for it; confirm your actual recovery method while you can still sign in.
Understand what FileVault protects
On macOS 11 and later, the signed system volume protects system content. With FileVault enabled, the separate data volume remains encrypted. FileVault is principally protection for data at rest: it helps when someone has physical possession of the Mac or its storage, but it does not make an already unlocked session safe from every threat.

Enable the firewall, then test the applications that need the network
The built-in firewall is at System Settings > Network > Firewall. Turn on Firewall, then review the available app and service controls rather than adding broad exceptions automatically.
Use a least-disruption sequence
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Choose Network, then Firewall.
- Turn on Firewall.
- Leave app access at the sensible default while you test normal work.
- Open the controls for individual applications only when a specific program needs incoming access.
- After every change, test the affected function from the device that uses it.
The firewall governs incoming connections, not whether an application can make every outgoing connection. A blocked app may fail directly, or another program that relies on its local service may fail. Enabling file sharing, remote access, media streaming or another sharing service can open the ports required by that service.
Diagnose a connection that stopped working
- Identify the exact function that failed: remote login, a shared folder, a media receiver, a development service or something else.
- Check whether the application appears in the firewall’s allowed or blocked list.
- Allow only that application or service, not an unrelated broad rule.
- Retest from the same local network or remote location that normally uses it.
- If the function still fails, undo the last rule change and investigate the application’s own network requirements before adding more exceptions.
Record any exception you add and why it exists. That makes later cleanup possible and prevents a temporary troubleshooting rule from becoming a permanent opening.

Lockdown Mode: a targeted-threat option, not a default setting
Lockdown Mode is designed for people who believe they could be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks. Apple says most people are not targeted by the attacks this mode is intended to mitigate. For ordinary security hygiene, FileVault recovery planning and a correctly configured firewall are usually more relevant.

Lockdown Mode restricts selected features to reduce attack surface. Depending on the service and macOS version, message attachments may be limited, some web technologies may be disabled or constrained, incoming invitations may be restricted, and tethered connections or accessory behavior may change. These restrictions can affect legitimate work, communications and browsing.
Turn it on deliberately
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Select Lockdown Mode.
- Choose Turn On and read the confirmation.
- Choose Turn On & Restart.
- Authenticate when macOS requests it and wait for the restart to complete.
Before activation, tell anyone who depends on the Mac that messages, websites, invitations or connected devices may behave differently. If a business workflow depends on a restricted feature, document that dependency first so the resulting change is not mistaken for a hardware or account failure.
Startup security: keep Full Security unless compatibility requires otherwise
Apple silicon Macs use Full Security by default. That default is the safest general choice. Reduced Security exists for specific compatibility cases, such as some legacy kernel extensions or older signed operating systems. It is not a general performance tweak or a routine hardening step.
When a change may be justified
Consider a startup-policy change only when you have identified the exact older component or operating system that cannot run under Full Security, confirmed that the software is trusted, and accepted the security trade-off. Prefer updating or replacing the incompatible component instead of weakening the boot policy.

Where the setting lives on Apple silicon
Apple directs users to macOS Recovery and Startup Security Utility for startup-policy changes. The exact Recovery entry sequence and available choices vary by Mac model and macOS release. Enter Recovery only when you have a documented compatibility need, authenticate as an administrator, change the minimum policy required, and record what was changed so you can restore Full Security later.
Do not disable System Integrity Protection as a generic security measure. It protects critical system areas and is a separate control from FileVault, the firewall and Lockdown Mode.
Intel firmware passwords: a separate, high-risk legacy control
On supported Intel Macs, a firmware password can prevent the Mac from starting from macOS Recovery or another disk without that password. This can block an attacker from choosing an alternate startup disk, but forgetting the password can also make legitimate recovery harder. Apple says Apple silicon does not support this feature and identifies FileVault as the comparable security measure for Apple silicon.
Identify the Mac type before looking for a firmware-password setting. Do not set one merely because it sounds more secure. If you cannot explain how an authorized owner will recover the Mac and who will retain the password, leave the setting alone and use the protections appropriate to the hardware.

- Confirm that you can sign in to an administrator account.
- Confirm the Mac model family: Apple silicon, Intel with T2, or older Intel.
- For FileVault, choose Apple Account recovery or a separate recovery key before clicking the final confirmation.
- Store a recovery key outside the encrypted Mac and keep it confidential.
- For a managed Mac, obtain the administrator’s recovery procedure instead of creating your own.
- List any services that require incoming connections, such as remote access or file sharing, before enabling firewall restrictions.
- For Lockdown Mode, identify messaging, browsing and accessory features that the user depends on.
- For startup security, document the compatibility requirement before entering Recovery.
- Keep a current backup. Encryption and access controls do not replace a backup, and a backup is useful only if its restore credentials are also available.
What to do when something goes wrong
You cannot find FileVault
Check System Settings > Privacy & Security and use the search field in System Settings for “FileVault.” Labels and layout vary by macOS release. If the Mac is managed, the organization may control or hide parts of the setting; contact its administrator.

You forgot the login password
Use the recovery route you selected when FileVault was enabled. If that route is unavailable and the recovery key is also missing, do not erase the Mac expecting the encrypted files to reappear. Apple’s stated outcome is permanent loss of the files and settings when both recovery paths are unavailable.
An app stopped accepting connections after the firewall change
Return to System Settings > Network > Firewall, inspect that app’s incoming-access decision, and temporarily reverse the last change to confirm the cause. Then add the narrowest allowance the app needs and retest the dependent service.
Lockdown Mode changed a workflow
Check whether the failure involves an attachment, website feature, invitation or tethered connection. Those are areas Lockdown Mode intentionally restricts. Decide whether the targeted-threat benefit outweighs the specific workflow cost before changing the mode again.
Startup options do not match the instructions
Stop rather than guessing. Startup Security Utility choices depend on the Mac’s processor, operating system and current policy. Verify the hardware family and use Apple’s Mac Help instructions for that model; an Intel firmware-password procedure cannot be substituted for an Apple silicon Recovery procedure.
