To enable Legacy USB Support, open your computer’s BIOS or UEFI setup, find the USB configuration setting, select the option specified in the manual for your exact computer or motherboard, then save and restart. The menu path and what the setting actually changes vary by model. It is not the same as enabling Legacy boot mode, and it may not be the setting you need to make a USB drive boot.

First identify what is not working

“Legacy USB” can refer to different pre-operating-system problems. Decide which symptom you are trying to fix before changing firmware settings:

  • USB keyboard does not work in BIOS setup or another pre-boot screen: Look for Legacy USB Support and, if documented for your model, Port 60/64 Emulation.
  • An older operating system or utility cannot use a USB device: Check the model’s Legacy USB Support description. Some firmware options apply specifically to compatibility with legacy operating systems.
  • A USB installer or recovery drive does not appear as a boot choice: Check the boot menu or USB boot priority, the selected boot mode, and whether the drive is properly connected and prepared. Legacy USB Support alone may not resolve this.

How to enable the setting on your computer

  1. Find the exact model and firmware manual. Use the manual for the computer or motherboard—not a guide for a similar model—to locate the USB configuration options. Manufacturers warn that setup screens and procedures can differ between models.
  2. Open BIOS or UEFI setup. Restart and use the setup key or procedure specified by your computer’s manufacturer. The key and timing are model-specific, so do not assume one universal key.
  3. Locate the USB setting. Look in the firmware’s USB configuration or advanced settings for a label such as “Legacy USB Support.” Names and menu locations vary.
  4. Choose the documented value. If the menu offers Enabled, Disabled, or Auto, use the manual’s explanation for your board and your goal. “Auto” does not mean the same thing on every implementation.
  5. Save and restart. Use the firmware’s documented save-and-exit procedure, then check whether the original symptom has changed.

Do not change several USB, controller, and boot settings at once. Changing one documented option at a time makes it easier to identify the relevant setting and undo an unhelpful change.

What “Legacy USB Support” means—and why the label varies

Legacy USB Support generally describes firmware handling that makes USB devices usable in compatibility contexts before or outside an operating system’s native USB support. The exact scope is implementation-specific, so the label is not a universal promise about keyboards, storage devices, or booting.

For example, the Supermicro BH4SRG manual says its Legacy USB Support option allows onboard legacy USB devices, and that when it is disabled devices are available only to EFI applications. The ASUS PRO WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI BIOS Manual describes different behavior for that board: Enabled supports USB devices in legacy operating systems, Disabled leaves them available for BIOS setup only and removes them from the boot-device list, and Auto enables support when devices are detected at startup. These are examples for those particular boards, not settings behavior to assume on another computer.

Related firmware settings that are not interchangeable

Setting What it controls Why it matters
Legacy USB Support A platform-specific compatibility option for USB devices in legacy or pre-OS contexts. Its precise effect depends on the computer or motherboard firmware.
Port 60/64 Emulation Legacy keyboard emulation for operating systems that do not support legacy USB devices. The Supermicro BH4SRG manual describes this as a separate option and says enabling I/O port 60h/64h emulation provides complete legacy USB keyboard support for such operating systems.
xHCI/EHCI hand-off Controller hand-off behavior for operating systems lacking the relevant hand-off support. Vendor manuals document hand-off separately from Legacy USB Support; it is not a synonym for keyboard emulation.
Legacy boot mode or CSM The firmware’s method for starting an operating system. This is a boot-mode choice, not USB keyboard compatibility.
USB boot priority or boot menu Whether and which bootable USB device is offered or selected for startup. Changing boot selection is distinct from enabling USB compatibility support.

If a bootable USB drive is missing

  • Check boot mode: UEFI and legacy boot procedures are separate. Use the mode compatible with the media and instructions for the system you are trying to start.
  • Check the drive and its preparation: Confirm that it is connected and prepared as boot media for the intended system. A USB flash drive does not enable a firmware feature or guarantee compatibility by itself.
  • Use model-specific instructions: Intel’s troubleshooting article for the S1200SP server-board family separately checks Legacy USB Support, USB Boot Priority, boot mode, connection, and drive preparation. Its instructions apply to that family; do not treat its media-preparation details as universal.

The UEFI Specification 2.10 describes USB device paths that the UEFI Boot Manager must support. UEFI USB boot therefore is not synonymous with a motherboard’s Legacy USB Support setting.

When to change Port 60/64 or hand-off settings

If the specific problem is keyboard input in an operating system that cannot handle legacy USB devices, consult the manual for Port 60/64 Emulation. The Supermicro BH4SRG manual explicitly associates that option with legacy USB keyboard support for operating systems without legacy USB device support.

xHCI and EHCI hand-off options address controller hand-off behavior and are documented separately in the Supermicro and Oracle x86 server manuals. Change them only when the system’s manual or operating-system guidance points to that issue; enabling or disabling every USB option at once can obscure the cause.
