On a Lenovo laptop with an illuminated keyboard, the usual way to turn on the light is Fn + Spacebar. Press the combination repeatedly to move through the available brightness levels. Some Lenovo models use Fn + Esc instead.
This only works if the laptop was built with a backlit keyboard. A Lenovo laptop may have the same keyboard layout as a backlit model without including the lighting hardware.
Check whether your Lenovo keyboard has a backlight
Before troubleshooting the shortcut, look for a backlight symbol on one of these keys:
- Spacebar: the most common location.
- Esc: used on some Lenovo models.
The symbol usually looks like a small keyboard or a keyboard with rays above it. If neither key has the symbol, Lenovo says the computer does not come with a keyboard backlight. Check the exact model’s User Guide or Hardware Maintenance Manual if you are unsure.

Do not confuse a backlit keyboard with ThinkLight. Certain ThinkPad R-, T-, X-, and Z-series computers have a separate ThinkLight that illuminates the area above the display. It is different hardware and does not mean that the keys themselves are backlit.
Turn on the Lenovo keyboard light with the shortcut
- Turn on the laptop and sign in, or leave it at the Windows sign-in screen.
- Find the backlight icon on the Spacebar or Esc key.
- Hold Fn, then press the key with the backlight icon.
- Release both keys and check the keyboard.
- Press the combination again to cycle to the next setting.
For most models, use:
Fn + Spacebar
For models whose backlight icon is on Esc, use:
Fn + Esc
On a three-level keyboard, repeated presses normally cycle like this:
| Press | Result |
|---|---|
| First | Low or dim brightness |
| Second | High or bright brightness |
| Third | Backlight off |
Some Lenovo laptops have only two modes. For example, Lenovo lists the IdeaPad Slim 3 15AMN8 and IdeaPad 3 15IAU7 as models with two backlight settings rather than three. On those computers, the sequence will differ because there is no separate high-brightness step.

If Keyboard backlight is not listed, that does not necessarily indicate a Windows problem. It may mean the laptop does not include the hardware, the model uses a different control, or Lenovo Vantage does not support that setting for the configuration.
What to do if Fn + Spacebar or Fn + Esc does nothing
1. Confirm the backlight icon
Check the physical keyboard again. The shortcut is not a universal Lenovo command: it only applies when the relevant key has the backlight symbol. A normal Spacebar without the icon cannot turn on a light that the laptop does not contain.
2. Check Lenovo Vantage
Use Lenovo Vantage → Device → DEVICE SETTINGS → Input & Accessories and look for Keyboard backlight. Apply any available setting, then test the keyboard shortcut again.

A power drain can clear a temporary hardware-control problem. Use the procedure that matches the battery type.
For a removable battery:
- Shut down the laptop and unplug the AC adapter.
- Remove the battery.
- Hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
- Reinstall the battery.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the laptop.
For a built-in battery:
- Shut down the laptop and unplug the AC adapter.
- Hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter.
- Turn on the laptop and test the shortcut.
Is there a Windows command to enable the Lenovo backlight?
No. Lenovo describes the keyboard backlight as a physical switch and says it does not require driver support. There is no universal Windows command, PowerShell command, or Command Prompt command that can add a backlight to a Lenovo keyboard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows Settings also does not consistently provide a keyboard-backlight switch for Lenovo laptops. Use the hardware shortcut first, then Lenovo Vantage when the model exposes a software setting.

Why the light may turn off by itself
Keyboard lighting is commonly designed to conserve battery power. The behavior can also vary by model, BIOS version, power mode, and Lenovo Vantage settings. If the light turns off after sleep or a restart, press the shortcut again and check the Keyboard backlight option in Lenovo Vantage.
If the keyboard never illuminates despite having the icon, test in BIOS or Safe Mode before replacing software. That test helps separate a Windows or BIOS configuration issue from a failed keyboard, cable, or backlight component.

Why does Fn + Spacebar not work on my Lenovo laptop?
The laptop may not have a backlit keyboard. Check for a backlight icon on Spacebar or Esc. If the icon is present, check Lenovo Vantage, test the shortcut in BIOS or Safe Mode, and then perform a power drain.
Can I turn on a Lenovo keyboard backlight from Windows Settings?
Not reliably. Lenovo’s documented methods are the keyboard shortcut and, on supported models, Lenovo Vantage. Windows does not provide one universal keyboard-backlight switch for Lenovo laptops.
Do I need a driver to enable the Lenovo keyboard light?
No. Lenovo describes the backlight as a physical switch that does not require driver support. A missing backlight icon generally indicates that the hardware is not included.
What is the difference between ThinkLight and a backlit keyboard?
ThinkLight is a separate light found on some ThinkPad models that shines from above the display. A backlit keyboard illuminates the individual keys. ThinkLight instructions do not enable keyboard backlighting.
The Bottom Line
Look for the backlight icon on the Spacebar or Esc key, then press Fn + Spacebar or Fn + Esc. Cycle through the brightness levels with repeated presses. If the icon is present but nothing happens, check Lenovo Vantage → Device → DEVICE SETTINGS → Input & Accessories → Keyboard backlight, test in BIOS or Safe Mode, and perform a power drain. If neither key has the icon, your Lenovo laptop likely was not configured with a backlit keyboard.
