To turn on fuel-efficient routes in the Google Maps app, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings → Navigation → Route options and enable Prefer fuel-efficient routes. For better recommendations, also go to Settings → Your vehicles and choose the engine type that best matches your car.
Turn on the preference in Google Maps

Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone, iPhone or iPad.

Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Settings.

Google says the feature is available only in select countries or regions. Its help information does not list every supported region. Labels and menu placement can vary slightly by platform or app version.
Choose the right vehicle type
In the Maps app, open Settings → Your vehicles and select the closest match. Google says this setting applies to cars; motorcycles are assumed to use gas or petrol.

- Gas or Diesel: Choose this for a conventional internal-combustion car.
- Gas: Choose this for a compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) car.
- Hybrid: Choose this for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on fuel.
- Electric: Choose this for an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on electricity.
The engine selection can affect which route Maps considers most efficient. For example, Google notes that diesel vehicles can have a relative fuel-economy advantage on highways, while hybrids and EVs may benefit in stop-and-go city traffic and on hilly roads because of regenerative braking. These are general tendencies, not a promise about a particular trip.

Change the preference for a route
You can also adjust the setting after requesting driving directions. Tap More → Options, change the fuel-efficient-route preference or engine type, and tap Done. The exact labels may differ slightly by app version or platform.

What the setting changes
With the preference on, Maps considers efficiency alongside live traffic, route simplicity and road conditions. If there are multiple routes, it highlights the route it estimates to be the most efficient. With the preference off, Maps prioritizes the fastest route, but it can still identify an efficient alternative with a green leaf.
Maps estimates efficiency using factors that include regional average vehicle fuel or energy consumption, hills, stop-and-go traffic patterns and road type. Google says the calculation draws on insights from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency. Maps favors the efficient route when its arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route. If the estimated savings are small or the efficient route would take significantly longer, it may show relative fuel or energy savings so you can compare routes.

Compare the estimated arrival times and any displayed relative savings, then choose the route that best fits your priorities. The estimate is not a guaranteed amount of fuel or energy saved. Google’s help information does not give a typical-trip savings percentage.
Important limits for electric vehicles and car displays
Google Maps Help states: “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” Check the route and plan charging separately if needed.

These instructions are for the Google Maps mobile app. Maps built into a car can work differently: availability and functionality may depend on the vehicle manufacturer, region and data plan. Do not assume its menus or route options match the phone app.
