For the strongest practical Firefox privacy setup on Windows, open Settings → Privacy & Security, set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Strict, keep Total Cookie Protection enabled, turn on HTTPS-Only mode, enable DNS over HTTPS with the strongest mode your network supports, and leave Firefox’s security warnings enabled. Use narrowly scoped site exceptions when a login or embedded feature breaks instead of weakening protection everywhere.
What “strongest privacy” means in Firefox
Firefox does not have one switch that makes browsing anonymous. Its privacy controls address different parts of a web request: trackers and fingerprinting scripts, cookies, the encryption of the connection to a website, and the privacy of DNS lookups. The strongest sensible configuration combines those controls while preserving enough compatibility for everyday sites.
Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection is Mozilla’s strongest one-click global preset. It blocks known social-media trackers, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers, fingerprinters and all cross-site cookies. A Custom configuration can go further by removing WebCompat exceptions, but Mozilla warns that doing so can stop video playback, login popups and other site functions. For most Windows users, Strict globally with carefully chosen exceptions is the best balance.

Standard already includes Total Cookie Protection, which isolates cookies by site. Strict adds broader blocking, particularly for cross-site cookies and tracking content in every window. Choose Custom only when you can identify the exact protection that a site requires and are prepared to maintain exceptions.
Step-by-step: turn on the strongest practical settings
1. Open Firefox’s privacy controls
- Open Firefox on Windows.
- Click the menu button with three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- In the left navigation, select Privacy & Security.
This panel contains Enhanced Tracking Protection, cookies and site data, HTTPS-Only mode, DNS over HTTPS, security warnings, privacy signals and Firefox data-collection choices.
2. Set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Strict
- Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, select Strict.
- Read the listed protections so you know which categories Firefox will block.
- If Firefox asks you to reload tabs, reload them so the new rules apply.
Strict blocks social-media trackers, all cross-site cookies, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers and fingerprinters. “All windows” matters: the tracking-content rule is not limited to private browsing.
Firefox may retain compatibility allowances for sites known to need them. Those allowances are part of Mozilla’s WebCompat approach; removing them through a more aggressive Custom setup can create failures that Strict avoids.
3. Keep Total Cookie Protection enabled
Leave Total Cookie Protection on. Firefox keeps a separate cookie jar for each top-level site, so an embedded third party cannot use one shared cookie to recognize you across unrelated sites. Mozilla says this feature is enabled by default for all users worldwide.

This isolation is different from simply deleting cookies periodically. Deletion removes stored data after the fact; partitioning prevents an embedded service from reusing the same cookie context across sites in the first place.
4. Turn on HTTPS-Only mode
- In Privacy & Security, scroll to HTTPS-Only Mode.
- Select Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows for the strongest global behavior.
- When Firefox warns that a site does not support HTTPS, continue only if you understand the risk and the site is trustworthy.
HTTPS-Only mode forces connections to websites to use HTTPS rather than silently falling back to unencrypted HTTP. HTTPS protects the content of the connection in transit, but it does not make a malicious or compromised website safe. Keep an exception only for a specific site that genuinely cannot use HTTPS; remove it when the site is upgraded.

5. Enable DNS over HTTPS
- Find DNS over HTTPS in the same privacy panel.
- Turn it on and choose the strongest protection mode that works with your network.
- Confirm any provider or resolver choice shown by your Firefox build, then test normal browsing and any work or school services you use.
DNS translates a domain name into an IP address. With DNS over HTTPS (DoH), Firefox encrypts that lookup between the browser and its selected resolver, reducing what someone watching your local network can learn about the domains you request. DoH does not hide the destination from every party, conceal your IP address, or make Firefox anonymous. The resolver still receives the lookup, and the website you connect to can still observe the connection.
Some managed, filtered or captive-portal networks require their own DNS service. If enabling DoH prevents an internal hostname, parental-control page or sign-in portal from working, use the available Firefox protection mode that accommodates that network rather than disabling other privacy controls.
6. Review cookies and site data without weakening everything
Scroll to Cookies and Site Data and keep cross-site cookies blocked or isolated. Stricter cookie handling can break a payment redirect, an embedded sign-in, a video player or another service that expects to share state between domains.

When a site fails, use this recovery sequence:
- Click the shield icon at the left side of the address bar.
- Use the protection controls to create an exception for that site only.
- Reload the page and retry the specific action that failed.
- If the feature now works, keep the exception limited to that site and remove it when you no longer need it.
A site-specific exception preserves Strict protection elsewhere. Turning off global tracking protection or allowing all cross-site cookies is a much broader change than most breakages require.

Review Firefox Data Collection and Use. Where your current Firefox interface offers the choice, turn off optional technical or interaction data that you do not want to share.
Do not confuse those optional telemetry choices with Firefox’s anti-malware defenses. Keep protection against deceptive content, dangerous downloads and malware enabled. Those controls are intended to warn about security threats, not to serve advertising or cross-site tracking.
8. Enable available privacy signals
If your Firefox build offers them, enable privacy signals such as Global Privacy Control or the option to tell websites not to sell or share your information. These signals communicate your preference to participating websites. They are not a technical block: a site that does not recognize or honor the signal can still process data under its own policies.
What to do when Strict mode breaks a site
Breakage is the principal trade-off for stronger privacy. Common symptoms include a blank embedded frame, a video that will not start, a payment button that does nothing, a sign-in popup that never opens or a page that repeatedly asks you to authenticate.

Use the smallest possible exception
- First reload the page after changing protection; an old script or cookie can make a fixed setting appear ineffective.
- Use the address-bar shield to allow the required behavior for the current site only.
- Retry the one feature that failed instead of changing several settings at once.
- Afterward, inspect the exception list and delete entries for sites you no longer use.
When a broader change is unavoidable
If a service depends on a third-party login or payment provider, the exception may need to cover the site that embeds the service rather than the provider’s home page. Make one change, reload, and test. If the site still fails, return to the previous setting before trying another; this keeps the cause identifiable.
Removing WebCompat exceptions in Custom mode is a last resort. Mozilla specifically warns that this can stop video playback or login popups, so it is appropriate only when you accept manual troubleshooting for each affected site.
Verify that the settings are active
Firefox does not provide a single “privacy score.” Verify each control in the panel and perform a practical check:
- Enhanced Tracking Protection: the selector shows Strict.
- Total Cookie Protection: the feature remains enabled; it is normally on by default.
- HTTPS-Only mode: the all-windows option is selected, or the narrower option you deliberately chose.
- DNS over HTTPS: the feature is enabled and shows the mode you selected.
- Security warnings: deceptive-content, dangerous-download and malware protections remain on.
- Privacy signals: any available Global Privacy Control or sell/share preference is enabled if you want to send it.
For a simple connection check, type an http:// address that also supports HTTPS. Firefox should attempt the HTTPS version or warn before using an unencrypted connection. Do not use an unfamiliar site merely to test this; the setting can be confirmed in Firefox’s panel.
What these protections do not cover
- They do not make you anonymous. DoH encrypts DNS traffic to its resolver, while websites can still see your connection and the resolver can still receive lookups.
- They do not erase information you already gave a site. A website can retain account records, purchases and messages under its own policies.
- They do not replace account security. Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
- They do not guarantee that every site honors a privacy signal. Global Privacy Control and sell/share preferences depend on the receiving site’s implementation.
- They do not protect an already compromised Windows installation. Keep Windows, Firefox and security software updated and avoid untrusted downloads.
Windows-specific considerations
Work, school and family networks
A managed Windows device or network may enforce DNS, install a certificate, redirect traffic or hide Firefox settings. If a control is unavailable, do not assume it is off; the organization may be applying a policy outside Firefox. Follow the network owner’s rules, and avoid bypassing security controls on a managed device.

Captive portals
Hotels, airports and cafés often require a browser sign-in before normal internet access. HTTPS-Only mode or DoH can make the portal appear later than expected because the network must intercept an initial request. Open the network’s sign-in page through the system’s normal connection prompt, complete authentication, and then continue with encrypted browsing.
Shared Windows accounts
Firefox privacy settings are generally stored in the browser profile. If several people use separate Windows or Firefox profiles, configure each profile independently. A setting changed in one profile does not automatically protect another.
A maintenance routine that preserves the strongest setup
- After Firefox updates, revisit Privacy & Security and confirm Strict, HTTPS-Only mode, DoH and security warnings still have the intended values.
- Review the site-exception list periodically and remove entries for services you no longer use.
- When a new site breaks, create a single-site exception rather than switching to Standard globally.
- If a site later adds HTTPS support, remove its HTTPS-Only exception.
- Keep Windows and Firefox current so privacy and security fixes are installed.
Mozilla’s published guidance documents these features on different dates: its Firefox privacy and security features article was updated October 22, 2024; its Total Cookie Protection FAQ June 24, 2026; and its family privacy-settings guide June 15, 2026. Interface labels can change as Firefox evolves, so use the control names in your installed version when they differ slightly.

The recommended end state
For most Windows users, the strongest usable configuration is Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection, Total Cookie Protection left on, HTTPS-Only mode enabled for all windows, and DNS over HTTPS enabled in the strongest network-compatible mode. Keep Firefox’s deceptive-content and malware warnings enabled, send privacy signals if you want participating sites to receive them, and handle breakage with temporary per-site exceptions. This combination materially reduces cross-site tracking and unencrypted connections without pretending that Firefox alone can provide complete anonymity.
