To enable caller identification on an iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification and turn on the identification options available there. The names you see depend on your carrier and any supported caller-identification apps installed. Caller ID helps identify a caller; separate settings control whether unknown calls ring, are screened, or are silenced.

Turn on caller identification

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Apps, then Phone.

  3. Tap Call Blocking & Identification.

  4. Enable the available identification sources, such as Business Call Identification or a listed caller-identification app. Apple says business information may be supplied by Apple Business Connect or a cellular provider. Apple’s iPhone guide describes these supported sources.

  5. If multiple caller-identification apps are listed, review their order. Apple allows apps to be prioritized, so a preferred app can be tried first and other apps may be used when it cannot identify a caller. Apple’s Phone settings guide explains the available sources and app priority.

The menu only shows options supported by your carrier and compatible apps. Apple does not guarantee that every incoming number or business will be identified.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Where the caller’s name or business information comes from

Caller information can come from several places. Your iPhone may show a saved contact, information shared through Name and Photo Sharing, a carrier call directory, Business Call Identification, or a supported caller-identification app. Apple lists these sources in its Phone settings guide.

If a name is missing, that alone does not mean caller ID is turned off. First check that the source you intend to use is enabled. Then check whether your carrier or app supports the number in question. A number that is absent from the sources available to your iPhone may still appear without a name.

Caller ID is different from screening, silencing, and blocking

Identification provides information about a caller. Screening and filtering settings change what happens to calls from unknown or suspected-spam numbers. They are separate controls, even though they are also found in Settings > Apps > Phone.

Apple describes these options in Screen and block calls on iPhone. If you want to recognize more callers, enable an identification source. If you want fewer interruptions, choose a call-handling option with care: it can affect whether and how an unsaved caller reaches you.

Troubleshoot missing names or calls that do not ring

A caller’s name is not displayed

An expected call is silent or goes to voicemail

Check Settings > Apps > Phone for unknown-caller screening, Unknown Callers filtering, spam handling, and blocked contacts. Also check whether a Focus setting is silencing calls. These call-routing settings can affect whether a call rings even when caller identification is enabled. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing Phone settings and updating iOS. Apple’s iPhone call troubleshooting guide provides further steps.

Screening or voicemail behaves differently than expected

Apple says call screening does not operate while roaming and is turned off for 24 hours after a call to emergency services. Live Voicemail and related voicemail features are not available in every country, region, or language, and voicemail availability also depends on the carrier. See Apple’s current call screening guidance and Live Voicemail availability information.
