To make Gboard capitalize the first letter of a sentence, open Gboard while typing, go to Settings → Text correction, and switch on Auto-capitalization. You can reach Gboard Settings by holding the comma key or through the keyboard’s feature menu. The exact route can vary by Android device and Gboard version.
What Gboard’s Auto-capitalization setting does
Auto-capitalization tells Gboard to capitalize the beginning of a new sentence as you type. It is not an “all caps” mode: it does not turn every letter into uppercase. To type an entire message in capitals, you would still use the Shift key or enable Caps Lock.
This setting is useful when you want normal sentence capitalization without pressing Shift after every period. It may also affect how a keyboard handles text after punctuation, but capitalization can differ between apps and devices.
Compare the two ways to open the setting

Turn on Auto-capitalization from Gboard
This is the most direct method because it starts from the keyboard you are already using.

- Open a text field. In an app such as Gmail or Keep, tap where you want to type so Gboard appears.
- Open Gboard Settings. Use either method that your layout provides:
- Touch and hold the comma key, then move your finger to the Settings icon.
- Open the keyboard’s feature menu, tap More, and select Settings.
- Open Text correction. In Gboard’s settings, tap Text correction.
- Enable the control. Find Auto-capitalization and turn on its switch.
- Return to the app and test it. Type a sentence, enter a period, add a space, and begin another sentence. The first letter of the new sentence should appear uppercase.
The wording and position of the feature-menu button can vary. If you do not see a visible Settings gear, look for a three-dot or feature-menu button first; the More option may be inside it.
Find the same control through Android Settings
If the keyboard is not open or its toolbar does not show Settings, use the phone’s system menus. A commonly cited example is:

Check whether capitalization is working
Test the behavior in the same app where you noticed the problem:
- Tap a text field and confirm that Gboard is the active keyboard.
- Type a short sentence and finish it with a period.
- Press the space bar and type the first letter of another sentence.
- Check whether Gboard displays that letter in uppercase before you continue.
Auto-capitalization is intended for sentence starts. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every name, abbreviation, or isolated letter will be corrected. A report that the setting did not behave the same way in every app is anecdotal; the available evidence does not establish a universal app-compatibility rule.

If Auto-capitalization is on but the result is wrong
Confirm the switch in the correct Gboard menu
Return to Gboard Settings → Text correction and verify that Auto-capitalization is still enabled. It is easy to change a similarly named correction option while looking through the menu.

Android phones can have several keyboard apps installed. The setting applies to Gboard only when Gboard is the keyboard currently being used. Tap a text field and check the keyboard switcher if the appearance or toolbar does not match Gboard.

Account for device and app differences
Android manufacturers reorganize system Settings, and Gboard labels can move between versions. In addition, community users have reported different behavior in different apps. That report is not enough to identify one universal app limitation. If the switch is on and the problem continues, record the affected app, Android device, and Gboard version before looking for a device-specific explanation.
Check the sentence boundary
The feature is designed around the start of a new sentence. Test after a normal period and space rather than in the middle of an existing word or after punctuation that an app may interpret differently.
How to stop automatic capitalization
If Gboard changes text in a way you do not want, use the same route: open Gboard Settings, tap Text correction, and turn off Auto-capitalization. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies this switch as the control to disable when automatic changes are unwanted.
