Most major browsers update in the background, but downloading an update is not always the same as running it. A browser can be waiting for you to restart, controlled by an app store or operating system, or restricted by a work policy. To verify that you are current, open the update page for your browser, let it finish checking, complete any requested restart, and then check the status again.
The correct procedure depends on the browser and device. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox have browser-level update pages; Chrome on Android follows Google Play settings; Linux distributions may own the package; and Safari is updated as part of Apple operating-system updates.
What automatic browser updates actually do
Automatic updating usually means the browser checks for new releases and downloads them without requiring you to find an installer. The final installation may happen immediately, when the browser restarts, through an app store, through a Linux package manager, or as part of an operating-system update.
That is why two checks are useful:
- Update control: the setting or service that is allowed to download and install updates.
- Version verification: the browser or operating system screen that reports whether an update is available and whether the installed version is active.
A status such as Relaunch or Restart to update means the download has not yet become the running browser. Finish that action before treating the browser as updated.

The update owner matters when a control is missing. A browser installed from a distribution repository or app store may not expose the same settings as a direct download. Likewise, an organization can replace the browser’s normal choices with a managed policy. Always check the channel that installed the browser before assuming automatic updates are disabled.
Turn on and verify automatic updates for Chrome on a computer
Windows and most Mac installations
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Help, then About Google Chrome.
- Leave the page open while Chrome checks for an update. It displays the installed version and the result of the check.
- If Chrome shows Relaunch, select it. The browser normally downloads updates in the background and applies them after Chrome is closed and reopened.
- After Chrome opens again, return to More > Help > About Google Chrome and wait for a fresh check. The page should report that Chrome is up to date.
Chrome normally manages automatic downloading without a separate switch that every computer exposes. The controls can differ by operating system, installation method, and whether the computer is managed by an organization. Closing and reopening Chrome through the offered relaunch command is the completion step; merely seeing a newer download notification is not enough.
The Mac option for all users
On a Mac, Chrome can show Automatically update Chrome for all users on the About Google Chrome page when Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. Enable that option if it appears and you want updates applied for every user account. Its presence is not universal, so not seeing it does not by itself mean that Chrome’s normal background updating is disabled.

Linux users generally receive Chrome updates through the distribution’s package manager. Use the distribution’s normal software-update mechanism rather than looking for a universal Chrome toggle. After the package is installed, open Chrome’s About page to confirm the browser information and restart Chrome if the page requests it.
On a Chromebook, Chrome is updated by updating ChromeOS. Open the device’s ChromeOS update controls, install any available system update, and restart when prompted. Chrome’s desktop About-page procedure is therefore not the complete update path on a Chromebook.
Update and verify Chrome on Android
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, find Chrome and select its update command if one is offered.
- When the update finishes, open Chrome and select More > Settings > About Chrome to view browser information.
Chrome on Android follows the automatic-update behavior configured in Google Play. If Chrome is not listed under available updates, the Play Store has no update ready for that device and account at that moment. A Play Store status is the relevant installation check; Chrome’s About page supplies an additional browser-level confirmation.
If an update is offered but does not complete, leave the Play Store open until the installation finishes, then reopen Chrome. A browser version displayed before the store completes its work can still be the older running version.

Turn on and verify automatic updates for Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge.
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Wait for Edge to check for updates and install any download it offers.
- If the page offers Download and install updates automatically, enable it.
- Restart Edge when prompted, then return to the same About page to confirm the result.
Some devices show a separate control for receiving updates over metered connections. Enabling downloads on a metered network can use mobile or limited data and may result in charges, so keep that option off unless the connection owner permits it.
Update controls can be dimmed, absent, or locked when a company or school manages Edge. In that case, the administrator’s policy determines when updates are downloaded and whether you can change the setting.
Turn on and verify automatic updates for Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- Select the menu button.
- Choose Help, then About Firefox.
- Allow Firefox to check for and download an update.
- If Firefox displays Restart to update Firefox, select it to make the downloaded version active.
- Open Menu > Settings and go to the Firefox Updates section to review installation behavior.
The Updates section controls a direct Mozilla installation. Other installation channels use their own owner: a Linux distribution’s Firefox package is updated through that distribution’s repository, while a Microsoft Store installation receives updates through the Microsoft Store. If the Firefox settings do not contain the controls described for a direct installation, use the store or distribution updater instead.
After restarting, return to About Firefox rather than relying only on the version shown in a help menu. The About page performs a current check for that particular installation channel.

Keep Safari current on a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro
Safari is delivered with Apple’s operating systems rather than through a separate, cross-platform Safari updater. Keeping Safari current means installing the latest applicable update for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS.
Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- Open the Automatic Updates information or options.
- Choose the automatic-download, macOS-installation, and security-response or system-file options that fit your policy.
- Return to the Software Update screen and install any update shown as available. Restart the Mac if required.
The Software Update screen is the place to verify both the installed macOS version and whether Apple offers another update for that Mac. Safari’s update status follows that operating-system result; there is no separate Safari switch to turn on.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Install for unattended installation, or turn on Automatically Download if you want to install downloaded updates manually.
- On the main Software Update screen, read the installed iOS or iPadOS version and install any update that is offered.
That screen reports the version currently installed and alerts you when another compatible update is available. The same operating-system model applies to Safari on Apple Vision Pro through visionOS Software Update.

How to verify that an update is really active
- Use the update page belonging to the browser or its controlling platform.
- Wait until the check finishes instead of relying on the number shown before the check.
- Read the status. Up to date, or no available update after a completed check, means the device’s current update channel has no newer release ready for it.
- If the page offers a restart or relaunch, complete it.
- Open the same page again and perform a second check after the restart.
For Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, the browser’s About page is the direct verification point. For Chrome on Android, check both the Play Store entry and Chrome’s About page. For Safari, check the Apple Software Update screen and the installed operating-system version.

Use the completion status, not just the download notice
There are three different states to distinguish: no update is available, an update has been downloaded but is waiting for a restart, and the new version is active. Only the final state confirms that the running browser has changed. If the page offers Relaunch or Restart to update, save open work and use that command. Then perform a second check after the browser starts.
When automatic-update controls are missing
The device is managed by work or school
Administrators can control Edge, Firefox, Chrome, or operating-system updates through organizational policy. Controls may be hidden or unavailable, and the browser may show a policy notice. Do not bypass that policy with a random installer. Ask the administrator which maintenance window and update channel the device uses.
The browser came from another channel
The same browser can have different controls when installed directly, from an operating-system store, or from a Linux repository. Use the updater belonging to the channel that installed it. Reinstalling from a different channel can create duplicate installations or conflicting maintenance rules.

Edge can expose a separate decision about updates over metered connections. Other platforms may also defer downloads when connectivity is limited. Connect to an unrestricted network, allow the update, and then repeat the browser’s About-page check. Avoid enabling a metered download if it could create a data charge.
The update downloaded but is waiting
A relaunch or restart message indicates that the new files are present but the old browser process is still running. Save work, close the browser through its normal restart command, and perform the verification check again after it opens.

The operating system is no longer eligible
Browsers do not promise the same release availability for every operating-system version. If the update page reports no update while a newer release exists elsewhere, check whether the device’s operating system still meets the browser’s support requirements and whether its distribution or store is supplying the package.
The check seems to show an old version
First confirm that the check actually completed. Then identify who owns the installation: the browser updater, an app store, a Linux repository, ChromeOS, Apple Software Update, or an organization. A version can be current for that channel even when another channel has a different release schedule. Check the owner’s status page and complete any restart before drawing a conclusion.

Browser update methods compared
There is no single universal “automatic updates” switch. The practical comparison is who owns the update and what action completes it:
- Browser-level updating: Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can check their own About pages. A restart may be required before the downloaded release becomes active.
- App-store updating: Chrome on Android follows Google Play settings, so the Play Store entry is part of the verification.
- Distribution-managed updating: Linux packages are supplied through the distribution’s repository and normal package tools.
- Operating-system bundling: Safari follows macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS updates rather than a separate Safari updater.
- Organization-managed updating: workplace or school policy can restrict timing, controls, and available channels.
Use the owner’s status screen, check whether a restart is pending, and verify again after completion. That process is more reliable than comparing a browser number with a release seen on another device.
A practical maintenance routine
- Once a month, open the browser’s About or platform update page rather than relying only on a version number displayed in a menu.
- Install offered updates before continuing sensitive work, and restart when the updater requests it.
- On Android, include the Play Store in the check; on Apple devices, include Software Update; on Linux, include the distribution package manager.
- On a managed computer, treat the administrator’s policy as the source of truth for timing and permitted controls.
- If a check remains stuck, verify network access, remove any metered-connection restriction that your data plan allows, complete a pending restart, and check the installation channel before attempting further troubleshooting.

How do I know whether my browser is actually up to date?

How is Safari updated?
Safari is bundled with Apple operating systems. Install applicable macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS updates through Software Update. There is no separate cross-platform Safari auto-update control.
What if Firefox was installed from the Microsoft Store or Linux?
The installation channel owns the updates. Microsoft Store Firefox updates through the Store, while a Linux distribution’s Firefox package updates through that distribution’s repository. The direct Mozilla update settings may not appear.
Can a work or school administrator turn off my update controls?
Yes. Managed policies can hide, disable, or lock browser update settings and determine the maintenance schedule. Ask the administrator which update channel and timing apply instead of installing an unrelated copy.
Should I enable browser updates over a metered connection?
