On a supported Android phone, open Settings, select Safety & emergency, tap Earthquake alerts, and switch the feature on. If Safety & emergency is missing, try Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled, because Android needs a data connection to deliver an alert.
The setting is not available on every phone, software build, network configuration, or location. The quickest support check is to search the Settings app for Earthquake alerts. If no result appears after trying both menu paths, confirm your region, install available Android and Google Play system updates, restart the phone, and search again.
What Android earthquake alerts do
Android Earthquake Alerts is a warning service built into supported Android devices. It is designed to notify you when an earthquake may produce shaking in your area. Depending on the estimated strength of the shaking, the notification can be more prominent than an ordinary app notification. Google’s October 15, 2026 announcement describes a full-screen “Take Action” alert for moderate to heavy shaking in the regions where that experience is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn alert is a warning, not a guarantee that you will receive advance notice. Google states that you might not get an alert for every earthquake. Magnitude and shaking estimates can contain errors, and a notification may arrive before, during, or after shaking begins. Treat the feature as one part of an emergency plan rather than as a replacement for local official warnings, household preparations, or your own judgment during an earthquake.

Check whether your Android phone supports the feature
Availability depends on more than the phone’s brand or Android version. Google says earthquake alerts are delivered only in supported countries and are not available in every area. The control can also vary with the device, software build, and network configuration.
Fast Settings search
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field or magnifying-glass icon.
- Type Earthquake alerts.
- Open the matching result if it appears.
If the result opens an Earthquake alerts page, your current device configuration exposes the feature. You can turn it on from that page. If the search finds nothing, continue with both manual menu paths below; some Settings layouts do not expose every control through search in the same way.
Check both Android menu paths
| Path | What to do | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts | Open Earthquake alerts and switch the control on. | This is the primary path on devices that show the Safety & emergency menu. |
| Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts | Open Location, choose Advanced, then open Earthquake alerts and switch it on. | Use this alternate path when Safety & emergency is not listed. |
Interpret a missing control
An absent Earthquake alerts entry does not necessarily mean you missed a hidden switch. It can indicate that the service is not supported where the phone is being used, is unavailable on that device or software build, or is not exposed under the current network configuration. Google’s support guidance specifically says availability varies by area, so changing unrelated notification settings cannot create regional support.

Primary method: Safety & emergency
- Unlock the phone and open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency. On some phones you may need to scroll through the main Settings list.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Read the information on the page, then switch the Earthquake alerts control to the on position.
- Leave Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled so the phone can receive the service’s warning.
Once the switch is on, leave it enabled if you want the phone to remain eligible for future warnings. The feature is controlled from this page; it is not necessary to install a separate earthquake-alert application just to expose the built-in setting.
Alternate method: Location
If Safety & emergency does not appear in Settings, use Google’s alternate route:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Tap Advanced. If the phone presents a longer Location menu, scroll until Advanced is visible.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Switch the feature on.
The two routes lead to the same Earthquake alerts control. Menu names can differ slightly between manufacturers and Android software builds, but the important labels to look for are Safety & emergency, Location, Advanced, and Earthquake alerts.
Why connectivity matters
Google requires Wi‑Fi or mobile data for Android Earthquake Alerts. The phone therefore needs an active connection when it is expected to receive a warning. A phone with the switch enabled but no usable data connection cannot be assumed to receive an alert.
- For Wi‑Fi, confirm that the Wi‑Fi icon shows an active connection rather than merely being switched on.
- For mobile data, verify that mobile data is enabled and that the phone has network service.
- After changing connectivity, return to Settings and confirm that Earthquake alerts remains switched on.
Connectivity is separate from regional eligibility. A strong Wi‑Fi or mobile signal cannot make the feature available in a country, on a device, or on a software build that does not support it.
What happens when an alert is issued
Possible timing
An earthquake alert may arrive before shaking starts, while shaking is already occurring, or after shaking begins. The timing depends on detection, estimation, network delivery, and the distance between the phone and the earthquake. Do not wait for a notification before taking sensible protective action when you feel shaking.
Possible accuracy limits
Google cautions that magnitude and shaking estimates can be wrong and that not every earthquake produces an alert for every user. An alert should be treated as an estimate of possible danger, not as a precise measurement of the earthquake at your exact location.

The “Take Action” experience
Google’s October 15, 2026 announcement says moderate to heavy shaking can trigger a full-screen “Take Action” alert in supported areas. The full-screen presentation is intended to make the warning harder to miss than a routine notification. The announcement does not mean every country, device, or earthquake will use that exact presentation; regional availability and the severity threshold still apply.
Google’s 2026 expansion and what it means for availability
On October 15, 2026, Google announced that Android Earthquake Alerts had expanded from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. That is a substantial increase in potential coverage, but it is not a promise that every location is supported. The practical test remains the Earthquake alerts entry in your own Settings menu, together with the country or region where the phone is being used.
Travel can make the distinction important. A phone that exposes the control in one country may not receive the same service when used elsewhere if that destination is outside the supported coverage. Conversely, a missing control while traveling may reflect regional availability rather than a hardware fault. Check the setting after moving between regions instead of assuming that the phone’s purchase location determines eligibility.
Troubleshoot a missing Earthquake alerts setting
Work through these checks in order. Stop when the control appears and enable it; if it remains absent after all checks, the most likely explanation is availability for the current region, device, software build, or network configuration.
1. Search again using the exact term
Open Settings and search for Earthquake alerts. Use the plural wording and check the results carefully. Do not rely only on a general search for “earthquake,” because a manufacturer’s Settings search may rank unrelated safety or location entries first.

2. Try the Safety & emergency path
Navigate manually to Settings > Safety & emergency. If the menu exists, open it and look for Earthquake alerts. A manual check is useful when the Settings search index has not refreshed after an update.
3. Try the Location path
If Safety & emergency is not present, use Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. This is Google’s specified alternate route, not a third-party workaround.
4. Confirm a usable connection
Turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data and make sure the phone is actually connected. Then search Settings again. Connectivity is required for delivery, although enabling it will not add the control if the service is unsupported in the current circumstances.
5. Install available system updates
Check for available Android updates and Google Play system updates in the phone’s update settings. Install any offered updates, allow the phone to complete its restart if requested, and search for Earthquake alerts again. Menu placement and feature availability can change with software builds, so checking after updates is worthwhile.
6. Restart and recheck
Restart the phone after updates or connectivity changes. When it has finished starting, repeat the exact Settings search and both menu paths. This refreshes the Settings interface without requiring a factory reset.

7. Confirm the current region
Check the country or region where the phone is currently being used. Google does not support earthquake alerts in every area. If the phone is in an unsupported region, there may be no setting to enable and no notification setting that can substitute for it.
8. Distinguish a support limitation from a notification problem
If the Earthquake alerts page exists and the switch is on, the issue is different from a missing-control problem. Recheck Wi‑Fi or mobile data, confirm that the switch remains on, and keep the operating system and Google Play system current. If the page never appears after the checks above, treat regional, device, software-build, or network support as the unresolved cause rather than repeatedly changing unrelated notification categories.

Keep the phone usable
A warning requires a working phone and the connectivity described above. Keep the device charged and avoid leaving it powered off when you rely on it for emergency communication. A USB‑C portable power bank can help maintain a charge during an outage; verify that its connector matches the phone and that it is charged before an emergency.

Because alerts can be late, inaccurate, or absent, use local official warning channels where available and learn the protective actions recommended for your location. The Android feature supplements those preparations; it does not replace them.
Respond to the alert and to shaking
If a full-screen “Take Action” warning appears, read it promptly and follow the safety guidance shown on the phone. If shaking starts before any notification, protect yourself immediately rather than waiting for the screen to change. The service’s uncertainty means the physical experience of shaking remains an important signal.
Quick Recap
A concise decision guide
| What you see | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Earthquake alerts appears in Settings search. | The control is exposed on the current phone configuration. | Open it and switch the feature on. |
| Safety & emergency is missing, but Location has Advanced. | The phone may use Google’s alternate menu path. | Open Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. |
| Neither path shows Earthquake alerts. | Support may be unavailable for the region, device, software build, or network configuration. | Update Android and Google Play system components, restart, verify the region, and search again. |
| The control exists but alerts are not arriving. | The setting alone does not ensure delivery; connectivity and service coverage still matter. | Confirm Wi‑Fi or mobile data, keep the switch on, and use local official warnings as a backup. |
What you should remember
- The normal activation path is Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts.
- The alternate path is Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts.
- Searching Settings for Earthquake alerts is the fastest support check.
- Wi‑Fi or mobile data is required to receive an alert.
- Google’s October 2026 expansion to more than 200 countries and regions does not make coverage universal.
- Alerts can be missing, inaccurate, or late, so keep local emergency preparations and warning channels in place.
