On a supported Android phone, open Settings > Safety and emergency > Earthquake alerts and turn the switch on. If that menu is not shown, use Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts, or search Settings for Earthquake alerts. Google says the feature is on by default on supported devices, but it only works in supported countries or regions and requires Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
There is no Google-documented button that sends a simulated earthquake alert. You can verify the configuration and understand the system’s limits, but a real alert cannot be forced on demand.
Turn on Earthquake alerts
Android’s documented path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety and emergency.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Turn the switch on.
Google’s Android Help documentation states that “Earthquake alerts are on by default.” The switch is still worth checking after setting up a phone, changing regions, restoring a backup, or troubleshooting a missed warning. Turning it on does not require a separate app, accessory, subscription, or earthquake sensor.

Menu names vary by manufacturer, Android release, language, and device configuration. Try Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. You can also open Settings and use the search box: type Earthquake alerts, select the matching result, and turn alerts on or off. Google Play services specifically documents this search method.

If search returns a result, use that result even if your phone labels the surrounding safety menus differently. If neither path appears, continue with the compatibility and regional checks below rather than assuming the phone has a hardware problem.
When the switch is unavailable
A missing menu does not necessarily mean the phone is defective. Earthquake Alerts is limited to supported countries and regions, and some safety features require Android 9 or later. The phone also needs Google Play services, which Google identifies as the service that provides Earthquake Alerts. Install system updates and update Google Play services through the normal Google Play update process, then search Settings again.
Requirements before you rely on an alert
Earthquake Alerts is a network-delivered safety feature, not an offline sensor that guarantees a warning. Check these conditions:
- Supported location: Google does not support the feature everywhere. Availability can change, so check the current country-and-region list in Android Help for your location.
- Network connection: Wi‑Fi or mobile data must be enabled to receive the alert.
- Compatible Android release: Google says some safety and emergency features work only on Android 9 and later.
- Google Play services: The service must be installed and current.
- Alert permission and sound: Notification, sound, vibration, and Do Not Disturb settings can affect how an alert is presented.
- Approximate location: Android uses an approximate device location to decide which phones are near an event. Google says this information is not used to identify or locate a specific user.
Battery Saver, Airplane mode, a disabled SIM or eSIM, loss of data coverage, or a phone that is powered off can prevent timely delivery even when the Earthquake alerts switch is on. These conditions do not necessarily turn the setting off; they can simply leave the device unable to receive or present a network message at the right time.
No paid hardware is needed to enable or verify the feature. It is a software setting delivered through Android and Google Play services. Do not buy a generic alarm, sensor, or phone accessory merely to activate Earthquake Alerts; such products are separate from Google’s service.
How to check that Android Earthquake Alerts is configured
Because Android does not provide a documented Earthquake Alerts demo, use this configuration check instead of waiting for an earthquake.
- Search Settings for
Earthquake alertsand open the result. - Confirm the switch is On.
- Turn off Airplane mode and confirm that either Wi‑Fi or mobile data is connected. Open a webpage or another network-dependent app to verify connectivity.
- Check your phone’s region and compare it with Google’s current supported-region list in Android Help.
- Open Settings > About phone > Android version (the exact label can differ) and confirm the device is running a compatible release. Google’s general safety-feature guidance identifies Android 9 and later for some features.
- Check that Google Play services is installed and has no pending update.
- Review Settings > Notifications and the phone’s sound and vibration controls. Make sure notifications are not blocked and that a restrictive Do Not Disturb schedule is not suppressing the warning.
- Keep the phone powered on and able to receive notifications. A locked screen is not the same as a powered-off phone; emergency alerts are designed to interrupt normal use, but delivery still depends on the phone being connected and operational.
This confirms that the feature is enabled and able to receive a message. It does not prove that every earthquake will trigger an alert or that an alert will arrive before shaking starts. A configuration check is therefore useful for finding an off switch, unsupported region, missing service, or connectivity problem, but it cannot recreate the detection and delivery of a real earthquake.

Can you send yourself a test earthquake alert?
No documented Earthquake Alerts test button is available in Google’s current Android Help instructions. Do not interpret the absence of a sample notification as evidence that the feature is broken. There is no supported procedure for entering a magnitude, choosing a simulated location, or sending a practice warning to one phone.
The separate Wireless emergency alerts test
Android has a different control called Test alerts under Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Google documents that this monthly wireless-emergency test control is exposed after enabling Developer options. It tests the wireless-emergency channel; it is not documented as a simulation of Android Earthquake Alerts and should not be used as proof that Earthquake Alerts will trigger.
Wireless emergency messages and Emergency Alert System messages also have a different origin and delivery path from Android’s earthquake warning. Keep both channels enabled when they are available in your region, but test and troubleshoot them separately. Seeing a wireless-emergency test proves only that that channel can display its test message; not seeing one says nothing conclusive about the earthquake-alert service.
What an Android earthquake warning covers
Google says Android can send alerts for nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above. The threshold is a description of the system’s intended coverage, not a promise that every event at or above that magnitude will produce a notification. “Nearby” also matters: recipient selection is based on the estimated location and shaking area, not simply on whether the earthquake happened somewhere in the same country.
How detection works
In California, Oregon, and Washington, Google says Android earthquake alerts are based on ShakeAlert. In other supported locations, alerts use the Android Earthquake Alerts System, which relies on information from Android phones to detect shaking and estimate an event. The detection source therefore depends on where the phone is located. This is why two people in different regions can receive warnings through systems with different sensor and processing arrangements.
How Google selects recipients
Approximate device locations are used to determine which nearby phones should receive an alert. Google says that location information is not used to identify or locate a specific user. A phone outside the estimated shaking area may not receive a warning even if it is in the same country as the earthquake. Conversely, a phone near the boundary of the estimated area may receive a warning even when the eventual shaking at that exact spot is weaker than expected.
Supported regions change
Google’s supported-region list includes many countries and territories, but the list is not permanent. Check the live Android Help page for your current country rather than relying on an old list copied into another article. A phone that worked in one country may show different availability after travel, a SIM change, or a regional software configuration change. The physically occupied region is the relevant check when troubleshooting a warning, not merely the country selected in a language or account setting.

Why an alert may be late, absent, or different from what you expected
Earthquake Alerts is a substantial warning system, but it is not a guarantee. Google lists several limitations:

- Not all earthquakes can be detected.
- Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can contain errors.
- An alert can arrive before, during, or after shaking begins.
Detection and delivery take time. A nearby event may begin before enough data is available to classify it, while a more distant event may allow more warning. Network delay, weak coverage, congestion, an inactive data connection, or an incorrectly estimated location can reduce the usable warning time. A notification arriving after the first movement does not by itself show that the switch failed. An alert that predicts stronger or weaker shaking than you experience can likewise reflect an estimate error rather than a defective phone.
The notification hierarchy also affects what you see first. Wireless emergency alerts and Emergency Alert System messages take priority over Earthquake Alerts, and Earthquake Alerts take priority over ordinary app notifications. A higher-priority emergency message may therefore interrupt or appear ahead of an earthquake warning.
Google announced on October 15, 2026 that the service had delivered more than one billion Android earthquake alerts and expanded from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. Those figures describe the service’s worldwide scale, not a guarantee for a particular phone, neighborhood, or earthquake.
Step-by-step troubleshooting for a silent or missing alert
1. Recheck the setting
Open Settings, search for Earthquake alerts, and verify that the switch is on. If search finds nothing, try Settings > Safety and emergency and Settings > Location > Advanced. Record the exact Android version and device model before escalating the issue; menu placement varies.
2. Restore connectivity
Confirm Wi‑Fi or mobile data is on and usable. Turn off Airplane mode. If you are using mobile data, check that the correct SIM or eSIM is active and that your plan has service. If you are on Wi‑Fi, try another network or mobile data to rule out a captive portal or local outage.
3. Confirm regional support
Open Google’s current Android Help supported-region information and check the country where the phone is physically located. Earthquake warnings are geographically targeted; being near a border, traveling, or using a phone configured for another market can produce different behavior.

4. Check Android and Google Play services
Install available Android system updates. Then verify that Google Play services is present and current. If it is disabled, restricted by an enterprise policy, or repeatedly failing, safety features that depend on it may not function normally.
5. Review notification and interruption controls
Check the phone’s notification permissions, volume, vibration, and Do Not Disturb rules. Also inspect any manufacturer-specific emergency-alert settings. Do not assume that a quiet phone proves an alert was never received: notification history, if your Android version provides it, can show whether a message was posted while sound was suppressed.

Temporarily disable an extreme battery-saving mode and remove aggressive background restrictions for Google Play services if your manufacturer exposes those controls. Keep the phone powered on. These steps do not create an alert; they reduce common conditions that can delay a network-delivered notification.
7. Separate system limits from a phone fault
If the setting is on, the region is supported, connectivity is available, and Google Play services is current, an absent warning may still be consistent with Google’s stated limitations. Not every earthquake is detected, estimates can be wrong, and timing can be before, during, or after shaking. Contact the device manufacturer or carrier only after documenting the model, Android version, region, network state, and the exact event time.
Android Earthquake Alerts versus other warning channels
Android’s feature should supplement, not replace, official warnings from local authorities or carrier systems. The channels differ in important ways:

Enable every relevant official channel offered where you live. Android Earthquake Alerts adds another possible source of warning; it does not supersede local instructions, evacuation orders, or emergency broadcasts.
Privacy and location behavior
Android uses approximate location to decide which phones are near an estimated earthquake and should receive an alert. Google says that this information is not used to identify or locate a specific user. The feature is therefore location-aware for delivery, but the documented purpose is regional targeting rather than publishing a person’s precise location.

What to do when an alert arrives
An alert is a prompt to take immediate protective action, not a prediction that tells you exactly how strong shaking will be at your position. Follow local emergency guidance. If shaking is occurring, use the safety instruction commonly summarized as drop, cover, and hold on: get low, protect your head and neck under sturdy cover if available, and hold on until movement stops. Afterward, check for injuries, fire, gas leaks, structural damage, and official instructions before moving through or re-entering a damaged building.
Because Google warns that an alert can arrive before, during, or after shaking and that estimates can be wrong, do not delay necessary action while trying to verify the notification, and do not treat a missing alert as evidence that no earthquake is occurring.

The menu is normally under Safety and emergency. On some phones it is under Location > Advanced. Settings search is the quickest alternative, because Google Play services documents searching for Earthquake alerts directly.
How do I know Android Earthquake Alerts are working?
Confirm the switch is on, Wi‑Fi or mobile data is connected, your physical location is supported, Android is compatible, and Google Play services is installed and current. These checks verify configuration; they cannot guarantee that a future earthquake will be detected or warned in advance.
