To turn on a Chromebook keyboard backlight, press the keyboard’s backlight brightness keys until the light reaches the level you want. On supported RGB gaming Chromebooks, open Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style, then choose a color under Keyboard backlight. If you are asking about a light mounted on the outside of the lid, ChromeOS has no universal consumer setting for it; you need the exact Chromebook model and the location or purpose of that light.
First, identify which light you want to control
“Chromebook light” can refer to two different features:
- Keyboard backlight: LEDs beneath the keys that illuminate the lettering in a dark room. You can adjust brightness on compatible hardware, and some models also allow RGB color selection.
- Lid light: A status indicator or another lamp on the outside of the display lid. ChromeOS documentation also uses the term lid light sensor for a sensor that detects light; that sensor is not evidence of a user-adjustable lamp.
The instructions below cover the controls that ChromeOS documents. They do not assume that every Chromebook has a backlit keyboard, RGB LEDs, or an exterior lid lamp.

Turn on and adjust the keyboard backlight
Use the dedicated brightness keys
- Turn on the Chromebook and sign in.
- Locate the two keyboard keys marked with the backlight brightness symbols. One decreases the keyboard light and the other increases it.
- Press the increase key repeatedly until the backlight is bright enough. Press the decrease key to dim it.
- If the keyboard is dark, press the increase key once or twice rather than assuming the feature is disabled. On a supported device, the light should respond immediately.
Google’s shortcut documentation describes these controls for customers in the United States using a standard English QWERTY keyboard. Key positions and symbols can differ on another physical layout, regional keyboard, or device revision, so use the markings on your own keyboard rather than a fixed function-key number.

If pressing the keys does nothing
- Check whether your exact Chromebook configuration includes a backlit keyboard. Two machines sold under a similar product name can have different keyboards.
- Try the increase key while the Chromebook is plugged in and again while it is on battery. A power-saving state can disable the light.
- Restart ChromeOS, then test the brightness keys before opening other applications.
- If there are no backlight symbols anywhere on the keyboard, the built-in keyboard may not contain illumination hardware. A setting cannot add LEDs that the hardware does not have.
Change the keyboard’s RGB color
Color selection is separate from brightness. It appears only on Chromebook models with a supported RGB keyboard; a white backlight cannot be converted to RGB through software.
- Open the Launcher and select Settings.
- In the left column, choose Wallpaper and style.
- Select Set your wallpaper & style.
- Find Keyboard backlight and select the color you want.
- Close Settings. The keyboard should use the selected color immediately; if it does not, raise the backlight brightness with the keyboard key first.
ChromeOS can choose a default keyboard color based on the current wallpaper. Selecting a color in the Keyboard backlight section overrides that wallpaper-based choice when the model supports the option.

This list is not a guarantee that every unit sold under one of those names has identical hardware, nor is it a complete catalog of every Chromebook with a backlight. If Keyboard backlight is missing from Wallpaper and style, the usual explanations are that the model lacks RGB support, the particular configuration uses a non-RGB keyboard, or the feature is not available in that ChromeOS build.
Why the keyboard light turns off: Battery Saver
Battery Saver can turn off the keyboard backlight to reduce power use. If the light worked earlier and then disappeared when the battery became low, check this setting before treating the behavior as a hardware fault.
- Open Settings.
- Select System preferences.
- Open Power.
- Check the Battery Saver state and turn it off temporarily for testing.
- Press the keyboard backlight increase key again.
If the backlight returns after Battery Saver is disabled, the Chromebook is behaving as designed. You must choose between the lower-power mode and illuminated keys when the battery-saving policy is active.

Keyboard-light troubleshooting by symptom
The keys never light up
- No backlight symbols: The keyboard may be a non-backlit version. Check the specifications for the exact model and configuration.
- Backlight symbols are present but there is no response: Make sure the increase key is being pressed, restart the Chromebook, and test with Battery Saver disabled.
- Only one brightness level works: Check whether the keyboard is actually RGB-capable. Some hardware provides illumination without color selection, and the available brightness steps vary by model.
The light works on AC power but not on battery
Open Settings > System preferences > Power and inspect Battery Saver. A power policy can disable the keyboard backlight during battery operation. After changing the setting, press the brightness increase key again; the light does not necessarily restore itself automatically.

- Confirm that you opened Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style, not only the general wallpaper picker.
- Check the model and configuration against the hardware list supplied by the manufacturer. A product family can include both RGB and non-RGB keyboards.
- If the keyboard is illuminated only in white, there is no software path to create additional colors.
- On the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, Google’s own gaming guidance says the keyboard is not RGB, so the color control should not be expected.
The backlight changes after changing the wallpaper
That behavior can be normal. ChromeOS uses the current wallpaper to determine a default keyboard color on supported RGB devices. Reopen Set your wallpaper & style and choose a color under Keyboard backlight if you want a specific color instead of the wallpaper-based default.
Can you customize a light on the Chromebook lid?
There is no general ChromeOS menu documented for turning an arbitrary exterior lid lamp on, changing its color, or selecting its behavior. A light on the lid could instead be a webcam or microphone indicator, a charging or sleep-status LED, or a model-specific decorative feature. Those components are controlled by the device firmware or by the feature they indicate, not by the keyboard-backlight setting.

ChromiumOS technical documentation includes a hardware property named has-lid-light-sensor. The name describes a light sensor located in the lid, which measures ambient light for the computer; it does not describe a customizable lamp visible from outside the lid.
To identify a particular lid light, record:
- the full model name and model number printed on the underside or in Settings > About ChromeOS;
- the light’s exact location, such as beside the webcam, on the outside cover, or near a charging port;
- when it illuminates, such as during charging, sleep, a video call, or when the lid is closed; and
- whether it is a steady light, a blinking indicator, or a sensor window.
Those details are necessary because there is no one lid-light control that applies across Chromebook models. Do not change unrelated accessibility, display, or keyboard settings in an attempt to force an indicator lamp; doing so cannot add a control that the model does not expose.

What to check before contacting support
- Write down the exact Chromebook model and configuration, not only the family name.
- Check for backlight brightness symbols on the physical keyboard.
- Test the brightness increase key with Battery Saver disabled under Settings > System preferences > Power.
- Open Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style and look specifically for Keyboard backlight.
- For an alleged lid light, note its location and the event that makes it turn on or blink.
- Describe whether the problem affects brightness, color selection, or an indicator lamp. These are separate hardware functions and require different support steps.
Limits of external keyboards and accessories
If the built-in keyboard has no illumination, ChromeOS settings cannot retrofit it. An external backlit keyboard may be useful, but compatibility, ChromeOS shortcuts, connection type, and RGB controls vary by accessory. The controls described here apply to Chromebook hardware and ChromeOS features; they are not a recommendation for a particular replacement keyboard.
