To turn on a Chromebook, connect it to power and press its Power button. If nothing happens, check the charger and outlet first; if the Chromebook appears to be charging, leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before trying again.
Turn on your Chromebook
- Connect the Chromebook to its charger and plug the charger into a working outlet.
- Press the Chromebook’s Power button. Google describes the button as being on the sides of the device, but its location varies by model. If you cannot find it, check the device’s labels or the manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s Chromebook startup instructions explain the basic process.
Complete first-time setup
Follow the on-screen prompts to choose a language and keyboard layout, turn on accessibility features if you want them, select a network, and accept the terms of service. Setup requires internet access and a Google Account, according to Google’s Chromebook setup guide. Some Chromebooks offer Guest browsing, but sign-in options can vary, especially on devices managed by a school or workplace.
If your Chromebook won’t turn on
Check the power connection
- Make sure the charger is connected to the Chromebook and to a working wall outlet. Charging-light behavior varies by model.
- If the device appears to be charging, leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes, then press the Power button again.
- If it does not appear to charge, check that the charger and adapter cables are fully connected. Test the outlet, then unplug the charger at both ends and reconnect it first to the Chromebook and then to the wall. Leave it connected for another 30 minutes.
These checks follow Google’s hardware and system troubleshooting guidance. If charging still fails, Google suggests a Chromebook hardware reset; if the problem continues, contact the device manufacturer. Reset steps vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact Chromebook rather than assuming a key combination will work on every device.
Check the charger’s compatibility
If the charger is missing or may be faulty, use a replacement confirmed as compatible with your exact Chromebook model. Check the connector and required power output in the manufacturer’s specifications; general Chromebook guidance does not establish one universal charger.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
When to consider ChromeOS recovery
Recovery is not a normal startup fix. Google says it removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases files on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Back up files first if you can access them. If the Chromebook is accessible and showing an operating-system error, try turning it off and on again; Google also recommends considering a factory reset before recovery if the error continues.
On supported Chromebooks, Google’s recovery instructions generally use this sequence: hold Esc and Refresh, press Power, then release Power. Some models use Esc and Maximize instead; tablets and Chromeboxes have different instructions. Follow Google’s recovery instructions for the exact device. Recovery may not be available on some older models that no longer receive updates.
