Windows 11 does not have one master switch for every AI feature. Recall snapshots, Windows Studio Effects, Copilot in Windows, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, and administrator policies are separate controls. Identify the feature you can see, then use its own supported setting. You may be able to stop data collection, pause it, filter what is captured, hide a shortcut, uninstall an optional feature, or have an administrator block it; those outcomes are not interchangeable. Menu names and availability can differ by Windows build, device hardware, app version, account type, and staged rollout.
Choose the result you want before changing a setting
Use this table to match your goal with the least disruptive control. A setting that hides an icon does not necessarily disable the underlying service, while removing an optional feature can delete its stored data.

Turn off or remove Recall snapshots
Recall is the Windows feature that can save periodic snapshots of your screen so you can search or revisit activity. Microsoft describes snapshot saving as opt-in: it remains off until a user enables it. If you enabled it and want Windows to stop making new snapshots, use the setting below.

Stop future snapshot saving
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Turn Save snapshots off.
This prevents additional snapshots from being saved. It does not uninstall Recall and does not, by itself, erase snapshots that already exist. If you only need a short break, use the temporary pause control instead.

Pause saving temporarily from the tray
- Find the Recall icon in the Windows system tray. If it is hidden, open the tray’s overflow area.
- Select the icon and choose the pause option for snapshot saving.
- Return to the same control when you want saving to resume.
Pausing is useful on a shared desk, during a sensitive task, or when you do not want to change the long-term setting. Remember that resuming the feature later allows new snapshots again.
Remove Recall completely
Uninstalling Recall is a different decision from switching off snapshot saving. Microsoft’s supported Windows Features route removes the optional feature and requires a restart.
- Open Windows Search and type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- In the list, clear the checkbox for Recall.
- Select OK and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC when Windows requests it.
Microsoft says previously saved Recall snapshots are deleted when Recall is removed. Choose this route only if you are comfortable losing those snapshots. Removing Recall does not switch off Studio Effects, Copilot, or AI features inside other applications.
Keep Recall but limit what it captures
If you want searchability for ordinary work but not for particular content, configure Recall’s filters instead of disabling the feature. Add apps and supported-browser websites to the filter list, then delete existing snapshots that contain material you no longer want retained. Filtering is narrower than turning saving off: it changes what Recall includes, not whether the feature is installed.
Website filtering concerns whether foreground-tab content appears in Recall. It does not make a web visit invisible to the browser, your internet service provider, the website, workplace monitoring, or other parties that can observe network or account activity.

Disable Windows Studio Effects
Studio Effects are camera enhancements such as background effects, automatic framing, eye contact, or other options exposed by your hardware and Windows version. They are independent of Recall and Copilot, so turning them off will not change snapshot saving or AI assistance elsewhere.
Use Quick Settings for a fast change
- Select the network, volume, or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings.
- Select the Studio Effects tile. You may need to use the edit control to add the tile if it is not visible.
- Turn off each effect you do not want, or disable the available Studio Effects controls.
Quick Settings changes the camera effects exposed for the current system session. The tile and individual effect names can differ by camera, Windows release, and installed drivers.
Turn effects off in camera settings
- Open Settings.
- Choose Bluetooth & devices, then Cameras.
- Select the front-facing camera.
- Switch off the effects you do not want.
Some systems also expose Studio Effects from the Camera app. If an effect is missing from Settings, check the Camera app’s own controls; hardware support determines which options appear. Disabling an effect does not remove the camera, stop video calls, or change camera permissions.

Handle Copilot in Windows separately
Copilot in Windows is a different surface from Recall and from Copilot embedded in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote. Windows does not provide a universal consumer switch that removes every Copilot entry across every build. First determine whether you want to hide an icon, stop using the Windows surface, or have an administrator remove the app.

Hiding an icon is not the same as disabling Copilot
A taskbar or menu customization can remove a visible Copilot shortcut when your Windows build offers that option. Hiding the entry changes the interface, not necessarily the service. Copilot may still be reachable from another Windows command, a browser, an app, or an account. Treat a hidden icon as a convenience or decluttering step, not as proof that Copilot has been disabled.
When the Copilot control is missing or locked
Windows feature availability is staged and can depend on edition, region, signed-in account, and organizational policy. If a control is absent, greyed out, or returns after an update, the PC may be managed. Do not attempt to bypass a work or school policy; ask the administrator which Copilot controls the organization permits.
Disable Copilot in Microsoft 365 desktop apps
Microsoft documents an app-level checkbox for supported Windows desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. The setting is per app and per device, so changing it in Word does not automatically change Excel or PowerPoint.
Use the supported app setting
- Open the Microsoft 365 app you want to change.
- Select File, then Options.
- Open the Copilot page.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Select OK.
- Close and restart the app.
Microsoft’s documented control is for users signed in with a personal Microsoft account. It is not available for work or school accounts. The support documentation lists minimum app versions as of March 13, 2025; update the app and check its current documentation if the Copilot page or checkbox is absent.

Repeat the change for each app
Because the checkbox is app-specific, perform the steps separately in every supported application where you do not want Copilot. A disabled setting in OneNote does not alter Copilot in Windows, the Copilot service, or another Microsoft 365 application.
Do not confuse a hidden ribbon icon with a disabled feature
Microsoft notes that hiding a Copilot ribbon icon does not prevent access through other methods. If your goal is to stop Copilot functionality, use the app’s Enable Copilot setting when your account and version support it. If your goal is only a cleaner ribbon, hiding the icon may be sufficient, but it is not a privacy or service shutdown.
Review Copilot account privacy controls
The Copilot service has separate controls for personalization and memory. These are account- and service-level settings, not a Windows-wide AI switch. Turning off memory does not automatically delete memories that were already saved; use the service’s deletion controls if you want existing memories removed. Changing these options also does not disable Recall or Studio Effects on the PC.

Microsoft’s WindowsAI Policy CSP provides organization-level controls that are different from consumer Settings. Depending on Windows version, edition, and management configuration, an administrator can disable Recall snapshot saving, remove the Microsoft Copilot app, and disable Cocreator functionality in Paint.

- A policy can make a setting unavailable or greyed out.
- An administrator can enforce a value again after a user changes it.
- The policy may apply to one feature, app, user group, or device rather than to all AI functionality.
- Supported policy names and operating-system requirements can change with Windows updates.
If you need a managed feature changed, give IT the exact feature name and the outcome you want—for example, no Recall snapshots or removal of the Copilot app. An administrator can verify whether the organization’s management system supports that control and whether it is allowed by company policy.

Troubleshoot common results
Recall still appears after Save snapshots is off
Turning off Save snapshots stops new automatic saving but leaves Recall installed. Existing snapshots and the Recall interface can remain until you delete them or remove the optional feature. If you need all saved snapshots gone, use Recall’s deletion controls or remove Recall through Windows Features, understanding that removal deletes the saved snapshots.
You cannot find Recall & snapshots
Check that you are running a Windows version that includes Recall and that the feature is available for your device and account. Availability is staged, and managed devices can hide the page. Install current Windows updates, search Settings for Recall, and contact your administrator if the PC is managed.
The Studio Effects tile is missing
Your camera or driver may not expose Studio Effects, or the tile may not be pinned to Quick Settings. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and the Camera app. The absence of a tile means the available controls differ; it does not indicate that Recall or Copilot is disabled.
The Copilot checkbox is missing in a Microsoft 365 app
Confirm that you are using a supported Windows desktop app version and a personal Microsoft account. Work and school accounts do not receive the documented checkbox. Update the app, restart it, and check again. If your organization manages Microsoft 365, ask IT whether policy controls the feature.
A hidden Copilot icon comes back
An update, policy, or account configuration may restore a shortcut. Hiding an icon is only a surface-level change, so its return does not prove that a disabled Copilot setting was reversed. Recheck the app-level or administrator control that matches your actual goal.
Verify what you changed
- For Recall, confirm that Save snapshots is off and decide whether existing snapshots should be deleted.
- For Recall removal, verify that the Recall feature was unchecked in Windows Features and complete the required restart.
- For Studio Effects, open the camera preview or Camera settings and confirm that each unwanted effect is off.
- For Microsoft 365, repeat the Copilot checkbox check in every app you changed after restarting it.
- For a hidden shortcut, test another access path before assuming the service is disabled.
- For a managed device, ask IT which policy is applied and whether it covers the feature you named.
Limits of a Windows AI shutdown checklist
Windows and its applications receive new features through regular updates, and not every AI-connected function is controlled by the named settings. The procedures above cover Recall, Studio Effects, Copilot in Windows, Copilot in the listed Microsoft 365 desktop apps, Copilot account memory controls, and the documented WindowsAI administrative policies. Insider builds, future releases, third-party applications, and other Microsoft services can expose additional controls. Recheck the exact feature name and current menu path after a major update rather than assuming one switch governs the entire PC.
