If Windows 11 Widgets keep appearing when you move the pointer across the taskbar, change the hover setting. If you do not want the Widgets button visible at all, turn off the taskbar Widgets item. These are separate controls: hiding the icon does not remove every way to open the Widgets board.
For the taskbar, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and switch Widgets off. To keep the icon but prevent accidental pointer activation, open Widgets, select its settings button, and switch Open Widgets board on hover off. Widgets shown on the lock screen have a separate setting under Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
What each Windows 11 Widgets setting actually changes
Windows 11 exposes several Widgets controls in different places. Choosing the wrong one can make it seem as though the change did not work, so first match the setting to the behavior that bothers you.

Microsoft documents the taskbar control in its Customize the Taskbar in Windows article. The lock-screen option is covered separately in Customize the Lock Screen in Windows. The labels and layout can vary slightly between Windows 11 releases, so use the current Microsoft support route if your screen looks different.

Hide the Widgets button from the taskbar
This is the broadest documented taskbar change. It removes the visible entry point so the pointer is less likely to land on it, while leaving the Widgets feature available through other routes.
- Open Settings. You can press Windows key+I or select Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Personalization in the left-hand navigation.
- Select Taskbar.
- Find the Taskbar items section.
- Switch Widgets to Off.
The icon should disappear from the taskbar immediately. Microsoft also supports a quicker route: right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings, then change the same Widgets switch. Both routes are described in Microsoft’s taskbar documentation.
If the icon is still visible
Confirm that you changed Taskbar > Taskbar items > Widgets, not the lock-screen option. If the switch is already off but the taskbar has not refreshed, lock and unlock Windows or restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. Those refresh actions do not change the setting; they only redraw the taskbar. If your organization manages taskbar policies, a work or school administrator may also control which items appear.

- Open the Widgets board by selecting its taskbar button, or use another available Widgets entry point.
- On the Widgets navigation bar, select the settings button.
- Find Open Widgets board on hover.
- Switch the setting to Off.
Move the pointer away and back across the button to test it. With hover opening disabled, the board should not appear just because the pointer crosses the button; a deliberate selection is still available. This is different from hiding the taskbar item, which removes the button altogether. Microsoft lists this hover control in Stay up to date with Widgets in Windows.
When the hover option is not shown
The Widgets board can receive feature updates independently of the main Settings app, and Microsoft changes navigation labels between Windows releases. Make sure you opened the board’s own settings button rather than the general Windows Settings app. If the option is absent, check the current Microsoft Widgets support page for the release-specific interface instead of selecting a similarly named switch by guesswork.
Remove Widgets from the lock screen
If Widgets appear before you sign in, changing the taskbar or hover settings will not address that screen. Lock-screen Widgets have their own control.

- Select Personalization.
- Select Lock screen.
- Find the Widgets option and switch it to Off.
This affects Widgets displayed on the lock screen only. It does not hide the taskbar button after you sign in, and it does not change whether the Widgets board opens on hover. Microsoft’s lock-screen instructions are at Customize the Lock Screen in Windows.

Which combination should you use?
Choose the smallest change that fixes the trigger you experience. The following combinations keep the controls separate and avoid disabling more than necessary.

For general taskbar decluttering, Microsoft also provides context in Make it easier to focus on tasks. That guidance does not turn the three Widgets controls into one master switch.
What hiding the taskbar icon does not disable
Turning off the taskbar item changes the taskbar’s appearance; it is not documented as a complete removal of the Widgets board. Microsoft specifically says that the board remains accessible with Windows key+W and by swiping from the side of the screen. Therefore, someone who needs Widgets completely out of reach should not assume that the taskbar switch blocks those interactions.
Windows key+W
Pressing Windows key+W is a deliberate keyboard shortcut for the Widgets board. If you hide the taskbar icon but the board still appears when that shortcut is pressed, the behavior is consistent with Microsoft’s documented access methods rather than evidence that the taskbar setting failed.

Side swipe
On supported touch devices, a swipe from the side of the screen can also open the board. Hiding the taskbar item does not establish that this gesture has been removed. If touch gestures are the source of the accidental opening, use the hover and taskbar settings above, then avoid treating the hidden icon as a complete gesture block.
How to check that the change worked
Test the specific interaction you intended to change instead of checking only whether a setting is off.
- Taskbar test: after switching Taskbar items > Widgets off, confirm that the button is no longer present on the taskbar.
- Hover test: with the button visible, move the pointer across its former or current location without clicking. The board should not open when Open Widgets board on hover is off.
- Lock-screen test: press Windows key+L and inspect the lock screen. The lock-screen Widgets area should be absent when its separate switch is off.
- Alternate-access test: if you press Windows key+W or perform a side swipe, the board may still open because those routes are documented separately from taskbar visibility.
Testing this way distinguishes a setting that changed the display from one that changed an activation trigger.
Troubleshooting when Widgets keep opening
The board opens when the pointer passes the taskbar
Open the board’s settings and disable Open Widgets board on hover. Hiding the taskbar button is not the same control, so turning off the taskbar item alone does not prove that hover activation was changed.

The board opens after the button was hidden
Check whether the action is Windows key+W or a side swipe. Microsoft documents both as alternate access methods. The taskbar switch is working if the icon is gone; it was never documented as a block for those routes.
Widgets appear only on the sign-in or lock screen
Change Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Widgets. A taskbar change applies after sign-in and does not control the lock screen.
The setting names do not match these instructions
Windows 11 releases can change Settings navigation and the Widgets board layout. Start from Settings > Personalization, then look for Taskbar or Lock screen. For hover behavior, open Widgets and use the board’s settings button. If the current labels still differ, consult Microsoft’s current Widgets support instructions rather than enabling an unrelated option.
The switch changes back later
Reopen the exact page and verify the state after Windows updates or a change in account or device management. On a managed computer, policy can affect taskbar presentation. If the switch remains off but the icon returns, record whether it returns after a restart, an update, or sign-in with another account; those details identify whether the problem is a taskbar refresh or a policy difference.
How to restore Widgets
You can reverse each change without reinstalling anything.
- To restore the taskbar button, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and switch Widgets on under Taskbar items.
- To allow hover activation again, open Widgets, select its settings button, and switch Open Widgets board on hover on.
- To restore lock-screen Widgets, open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen and switch Widgets on.
Each switch affects only the surface named by its page. Restoring one does not automatically restore the others.
Recommended setting for accidental openings
For most people who find Widgets opening while they move the pointer, leave the taskbar button visible and turn off Open Widgets board on hover. You retain deliberate access without the accidental trigger. If you never use Widgets and want the taskbar less crowded, turn off Taskbar items > Widgets as well, while remembering that Windows key+W and a side swipe remain documented access routes. If the unwanted panel appears before sign-in, change the separate lock-screen switch.
