On a smart television with Fire TV, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, then turn off Over-the-air Viewing Data (or the equivalent viewing-data opt-out). This setting concerns antenna television received directly by the TV; it is not a universal switch for streaming, Prime Video, or every app.
What “Viewing Data” means on Fire TV
Amazon’s documented control is called Over-the-air Viewing Data. It covers information about your use of over-the-air television content received through an antenna connected directly to a smart TV with Fire TV. In practical terms, that means broadcast channels entering the television through its own antenna connection, rather than video delivered by an app, a streaming stick, a cable box, or another external tuner.
The wording matters because “viewing data” can sound like a record of everything watched on the television. Amazon’s documented opt-out is narrower. It does not establish that Amazon stops receiving every kind of television or streaming information. Data associated with Prime Video, other Amazon services, third-party applications, device operation, and advertising can be governed by separate settings or service policies.

Turn off Over-the-air Viewing Data
- From the Fire TV television’s home screen, open Settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Look for Over-the-air Viewing Data, or a similarly worded viewing-data control referring to antenna or over-the-air television.
- Choose the option to turn the setting off or opt out of providing the data. Confirm if the television displays a confirmation prompt.
Amazon’s official wording says: “On smart TVs with Fire TV, you may opt out of providing information to Amazon on your use of over-the-air TV content received through an antenna connected directly to your TV via Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.” The documented path ends at Privacy Settings; Amazon does not publish a universal deeper submenu or a single toggle label for every model.
If your screen uses slightly different wording, stay within Privacy Settings and look for the option that identifies over-the-air or antenna viewing. Do not assume that a switch named Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, or Interest-based Ads is the same control.
What you need before changing it
- A qualifying product: the documented control is for a smart TV with Fire TV, not automatically for every Fire TV streaming device.
- The correct signal source: the setting concerns an antenna connected directly to the television. Broadcast channels delivered through a cable box, network tuner, or another external device are a different setup.
- Access to the television: the on-device route requires the Fire TV television’s settings screen and remote. No purchase, replacement remote, antenna accessory, or privacy utility is needed to follow Amazon’s menu instructions.
- The exact device in mind: settings are device-specific. If you own several televisions, review each qualifying device rather than treating one change as an account-wide change.
You do not need to turn off every privacy option to opt out of antenna viewing information. Select the category that matches the data source you want to limit.
If the setting is missing
An absent control does not necessarily mean that the television is malfunctioning. Work through these checks before changing unrelated privacy options:
- Confirm the product type. The documented opt-out is for a smart TV with Fire TV. A Fire TV Stick or other streaming device connected to a television may not expose the same control.
- Check the antenna arrangement. The setting concerns an antenna connected directly to the TV. If broadcast channels are supplied by a cable box, network tuner, or another device, this particular control may not apply to the signal path you use.
- Return to the documented menu. Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings again rather than searching under app settings, display settings, sound settings, or network settings.
- Check the current model support information. Amazon does not publish a complete model list or software-version list for this option. The television manufacturer’s current support page or the television’s built-in help is the appropriate place to verify model-specific availability.
- Do not substitute another switch. Turning off Device Usage Data or Interest-based Ads changes different categories of processing; it is not proof that Over-the-air Viewing Data has been disabled.
Amazon’s FAQ does not specify an exact toggle label for every television. A slightly different label is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the option is unrelated. Look for the words “over-the-air,” “antenna,” or “viewing data,” and rely on the model’s own support information when the wording is unclear.
Privacy settings are device-specific. A change made on one Fire TV television should not be assumed to change settings on another television or streaming device signed in to the same Amazon account.
Manage the setting from an Amazon account when supported
Amazon says that certain smart TVs with Fire TV allow privacy settings to be managed in an account. When that option is available, go to amazon.com/mycd > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy and look for the applicable device setting.

This account route is an alternative, not a universal control. If the television is not listed or the relevant option is not shown, use the television’s on-device menu and consult support information for that model. Account changes also do not imply that every Fire TV device in your household shares the same configuration.
Because Amazon describes these settings as device-specific, confirm the result on the particular television you use for antenna viewing. If you manage more than one qualifying smart TV, repeat the review for each device instead of assuming that the account page applies the same state everywhere.
How the other Fire TV privacy controls differ
Fire TV places several controls together under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, but they cover different data categories. Use the category, not the similar-sounding name, to decide which setting you need.
| Control | Data category | What Amazon says the control changes | Availability or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over-the-air Viewing Data | Use of broadcast television received through an antenna connected directly to the smart TV | Lets a qualifying smart TV user opt out of providing this viewing information to Amazon | Documented for smart TVs with Fire TV; not established as a control on every Fire TV streaming device |
| Device Usage Data | Operating-system-collected information about device use | When turned off, Amazon says it stops processing this device-usage data for customized marketing offers and improving products and features | It does not disable processing needed for certain device features, such as Parental Controls or the Recents row |
| Collect App Usage Data | Third-party app activity, including opening, closing, and duration of use | Controls collection of the app-usage information described by Amazon | Separate from antenna television viewing data |
| Interest-based Ads | Advertising and analytics use of an advertising identifier made available to apps on certain Amazon devices | Controls the interest-based advertising preference and related identifier behavior described in the device settings | It is separate from both viewing-data and app-usage controls |
Amazon directs users to the relevant service or app settings for privacy choices tied to Amazon services. For third-party apps, the provider’s own settings and privacy notice govern additional collection and use. A setting’s location in the same Privacy Settings screen does not mean that one switch controls the others.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What turning off Device Usage Data does—and does not do
Device Usage Data is the control most likely to be confused with Over-the-air Viewing Data because both appear in the same privacy area. Amazon states that switching Device Usage Data off stops processing of that device-usage data for serving customized marketing offers and improving products and features.
That opt-out has stated limits:
- It does not stop processing Amazon says is needed for device features such as Parental Controls or the Recents row.
- It does not guarantee that marketing offers disappear. Amazon distinguishes the data used for customized offers from other marketing activity.
- It does not stop interest-based advertising that uses data other than Device Usage Data.
- It does not cover data related to your use of Amazon services, such as Prime Video, on the device.
Amazon’s own explanation is: “If you turn this setting off, we will stop processing this device usage data for purposes of serving you customized marketing offers and improving our products and features.” That sentence applies to Device Usage Data, not automatically to antenna viewing information or every other category.
Therefore, if your goal is specifically to stop reporting antenna-channel viewing, use the Over-the-air Viewing Data control. If your goal is to reduce operating-system usage data, address Device Usage Data separately. Neither choice should be described as a switch that stops all data collection.

What this opt-out does not cover
The antenna viewing control is not documented as a master privacy switch. It does not, by itself, change:
- Viewing or activity information processed by Prime Video or another Amazon service.
- Opening, closing, or time-spent information for third-party apps.
- Advertising and analytics activity associated with the Interest-based Ads setting.
- Information a third-party app collects under its own settings and privacy notice.
- Every category listed in Amazon’s general device terms, such as search queries, voice information, location, connectivity, signal strength, or other digital-content interactions.
Amazon’s Device Terms of Use, last updated October 8, 2026, state that device software may provide Amazon information about use of an Amazon device and interaction with digital content and services. The terms list examples including content usage, viewing data, search queries, location, voice information, connectivity, and signal strength, and say that information Amazon receives is handled under its Privacy Notice.
That broad terms statement provides platform context, but it is not a model-specific description of what the Over-the-air Viewing Data switch disables. Do not use the terms’ list as proof that turning off one television setting disables every listed category.
Common household scenarios
You watch antenna channels and streaming apps on the same TV
Use Over-the-air Viewing Data for the antenna portion of your viewing. Streaming activity remains subject to the relevant Amazon service or app controls. If you also want to limit third-party app activity, review Collect App Usage Data separately and then check each provider’s own privacy settings.
You use a cable box or external tuner
The documented control is defined around over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to the smart TV. It is not a general control for every signal entering an HDMI port or for activity recorded by a separate cable box, tuner, or provider. Check the privacy controls of that external service or device for its own data practices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou have more than one Fire TV television
Review each television independently. Amazon says these settings are device-specific, and the account-management option is available only on certain smart TVs. A setting changed on one device is not a reliable indication of the setting on another.
You share the television with other people
The opt-out changes the device’s applicable preference; it does not turn off privacy controls inside each app or create a separate viewing profile. Explain the scope to other household members so they do not mistake the antenna setting for a Prime Video or all-app privacy switch.

A practical privacy checklist
Use this checklist when you want a narrower, deliberate change rather than switching every available option at random:
- Identify the source you want to limit. Choose Over-the-air Viewing Data for antenna broadcasts, Device Usage Data for operating-system usage, Collect App Usage Data for third-party app activity, or Interest-based Ads for advertising preferences.
- Change the matching control. Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and adjust only the relevant option.
- Read the confirmation text. If the television presents an explanation, verify that it refers to the category you intended to change.
- Check for a device-specific result. Amazon says these settings are device-specific, so repeat the review on each qualifying television if you use more than one.
- Review app-level choices. For Prime Video or another Amazon service, use that service’s privacy and account controls. For a third-party app, review the provider’s settings and privacy notice.
- Record what you changed. A note of the device, date, and setting can help you diagnose a later reset after a software update or factory reset.
Troubleshooting after opting out
The option is visible but will not change
Return to the Privacy Settings screen and select the control again, watching for a confirmation prompt or an on-screen state change. If the switch immediately reverts, restart the television and check the model’s support instructions. Avoid assuming that a different privacy switch produced the same result. Amazon’s public FAQ does not provide a universal recovery procedure, so model-specific support is the appropriate next step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The setting disappeared after a reset
A factory reset, replacement television, or newly configured Fire TV device can have its own privacy defaults. Recheck the setting on the affected device; account settings are not a guarantee that every device has identical controls. If the option is still absent, verify that the product is a smart TV with Fire TV and consult its current support information.
You still see recommendations or advertising
Turning off Over-the-air Viewing Data is not described as disabling all recommendations or advertising. Device Usage Data, Interest-based Ads, Amazon-service activity, and third-party app data are separate categories, so remaining offers or recommendations do not by themselves show that the antenna-viewing opt-out failed.
You want to stop Prime Video activity data
The documented Over-the-air Viewing Data control does not cover use of Amazon services such as Prime Video. Use the relevant service or account privacy controls instead; do not rely on the antenna-viewing switch for that purpose.
You cannot find an exact toggle named “Viewing Data”
Amazon’s FAQ names the category Over-the-air Viewing Data but does not promise identical wording on every model. Search the Privacy Settings page for a control mentioning over-the-air or antenna viewing. If no such control appears, do not infer that Device Usage Data is an equivalent; confirm availability with the television’s model-specific support information.
Why the distinction matters
“Viewing Data” is often used as shorthand for several different kinds of activity. On Fire TV, the official opt-out with that description is specifically tied to over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to a qualifying smart TV. Treating it as a universal streaming-data switch can lead to a false sense that app activity, Prime Video use, advertising identifiers, and device diagnostics have all been disabled.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
The most reliable approach is to match the source of the data to the corresponding control, verify that the option exists on your exact television, and use service- or app-level settings for activity outside the television’s antenna input. Amazon’s FAQ does not publish a model list, software-version list, or universal deeper menu, so avoid guessing when your interface differs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off Viewing Data on an Amazon Fire TV?
On a smart TV with Fire TV, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, find Over-the-air Viewing Data (or the equivalent viewing-data option), and turn it off or opt out.
Does this stop Fire TV from collecting all viewing information?
No. The documented opt-out concerns over-the-air television received through an antenna connected directly to the smart TV. It is not documented as a switch for Prime Video, other Amazon services, third-party apps, or every type of device data.
Recommended Free Tools
Does turning off Device Usage Data stop Prime Video data collection?
No. Amazon says Device Usage Data is a separate category and that turning it off does not cover data related to use of Amazon services such as Prime Video.
Why can’t I find Over-the-air Viewing Data?
Amazon documents this control for smart TVs with Fire TV, not every Fire TV streaming device. Check the product type, revisit Privacy Settings, and consult the support information for your exact television model.
Can I change the preference online?
Certain smart TVs with Fire TV support account management at amazon.com/mycd > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. Amazon describes this as available only on certain models, so use the on-device menu when the television is not listed.
Is Collect App Usage Data the same as Viewing Data?
No. Collect App Usage Data concerns third-party app activity, including opening, closing, and duration of use. It is separate from the antenna-based Over-the-air Viewing Data control.
Will turning off Over-the-air Viewing Data remove advertisements?
Not necessarily. Interest-based Ads, Device Usage Data, Amazon-service activity, and other data sources have separate controls or policies. The antenna opt-out is not described as a general advertising switch.
Do these settings apply to every Fire TV device on my account?
Amazon says these settings are device-specific. Review each qualifying television separately; an account page or change on one device should not be assumed to configure every other Fire TV product.
The Bottom Line
To opt out of antenna-channel viewing information, use Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings on a smart TV with Fire TV and turn off Over-the-air Viewing Data. The control is limited to over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to the TV. Device Usage Data, third-party app activity, Interest-based Ads, Prime Video, and other services require their own privacy choices.
