To stop swipe typing, change the setting for the keyboard that is currently active. On an iPhone using Apple’s keyboard, open Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Slide to Type. On Android using Gboard, open Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing, then turn off Enable glide typing. If you installed Gboard on an iPhone, change the option in the Gboard app instead.

“Swipe typing,” “slide to type,” “glide typing,” and Apple’s QuickPath describe the same basic action: dragging your finger from letter to letter without lifting it. The exact switch depends on whether you are using Apple’s keyboard, Gboard, or another keyboard app.

Quick paths for each keyboard

Device and keyboard Settings path Switch to change
iPhone, Apple keyboard Settings > General > Keyboard Slide to Type off
iPhone, Gboard Open the Gboard app > Keyboard settings Glide typing off
Android, Gboard Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing Enable glide typing off

These are the official paths for Apple’s keyboard and Gboard. Android manufacturers can rearrange menus or rename items, so the words on your phone may not be identical. The setting applies to the keyboard you edit; changing one keyboard does not automatically change another keyboard installed on the same device.

First identify the keyboard that is typing

Before changing anything, place the cursor in a text field such as Messages, Notes, or a browser search box. Look at the keyboard itself. An Apple keyboard normally shows the Apple layout and an Emoji or globe key near the lower-left area. Gboard may show a Google “G” button, a toolbar, or Gboard-specific icons. On Android, the keyboard name may appear in the keyboard switcher opened from the bottom-right keyboard icon or navigation area.

This check matters because an iPhone can have both Apple’s keyboard and Gboard enabled, while Android phones can have Gboard, a manufacturer keyboard, or another third-party keyboard. The active keyboard is the one interpreting your finger movement. If you change Apple’s setting while Gboard is active, swipe typing can continue unchanged.

  • Apple keyboard on iPhone: use the iPhone Settings app.
  • Gboard on iPhone: use the Gboard app’s own settings.
  • Gboard on Android: use Android’s virtual-keyboard settings or Gboard’s settings screen.
  • Another keyboard: look for that keyboard’s own typing, gesture, swipe, or glide option.

Turn off swipe typing on an iPhone using Apple’s keyboard

Use the iPhone Settings app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Find Slide to Type.
  5. Turn the switch off. On some software releases, wording or the exact visual presentation can differ slightly, but the option is in the iPhone keyboard settings.

Apple calls its swipe feature QuickPath. Apple describes QuickPath as the ability to “slide from one letter to the next without lifting your finger.” With Slide to Type disabled, tapping individual keys continues to work normally. You are disabling the continuous sliding gesture, not disabling the onscreen keyboard.

Open Keyboard settings while you are typing

If you are already composing a message, you do not have to leave the app to find the relevant page manually. Touch and hold the Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key on Apple’s keyboard. The shortcut opens keyboard-related settings; from there, select the iPhone keyboard settings and turn off Slide to Type. The key shown depends on your enabled keyboards and language configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes after you switch it off

After the switch is off, dragging across letters should no longer insert a word through QuickPath. Tapping letters one at a time still enters text. Other features remain separate: predictive text can still suggest words, autocorrection can still change spelling, dictation can still enter speech, and keyboard haptics can still provide feedback. Do not change those options unless you want to alter those behaviors too.

Turn off swipe typing on an iPhone using Gboard

Gboard for iPhone keeps its glide preference inside the Gboard app. Apple’s Slide to Type switch controls Apple’s keyboard, not necessarily Gboard.

  1. Open the Gboard app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Keyboard settings.
  3. Find Glide typing.
  4. Turn the glide-typing option off.

Return to a text field and verify that Gboard is still selected. If the keyboard shown is Apple’s keyboard, the Gboard change will not be visible because a different keyboard is active. Use the globe or keyboard-switch key to select Gboard, then test again.

Gboard’s labels can change slightly between app versions, but the relevant setting remains under Gboard’s own keyboard settings. If you have more than one Gboard language installed, the preference is still managed from the Gboard settings area rather than from Apple’s general keyboard page.

Turn off swipe typing on Android with Gboard

Follow Google’s Android path

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Languages and input.
  4. Tap Virtual keyboard. On some phones this may be called On-screen keyboard or appear under a similarly named keyboard section.
  5. Tap Gboard.
  6. Tap Glide typing.
  7. Turn off Enable glide typing.

Google describes the feature this way: “You can slide your finger from letter to letter to spell out words.” Turning off Enable glide typing stops that gesture while leaving ordinary key taps available.

If your Android menus do not match

Android manufacturers customize Settings, so the route may be located under a different heading. Use Settings search for Gboard, glide typing, gesture typing, or virtual keyboard. Open the result that identifies Gboard, then look for the glide or gesture-typing category.

Google notes that some documented steps apply to Android 8.0 and newer and that customized Android versions can differ. If searching does not locate the option, consult the phone manufacturer’s current support instructions. Do not assume that a switch for predictive text or autocorrection is the glide-typing switch; those features have separate controls.

Phones using a different Android keyboard

The Android path above is specifically for Gboard. A phone may instead use a manufacturer keyboard or another downloaded keyboard. In that case, Android’s keyboard list tells you which keyboard is enabled, but the gesture option is usually maintained by that keyboard’s own settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a text field and identify the active keyboard.
  2. Open the keyboard’s settings from its toolbar, gear icon, or keyboard-switch menu.
  3. Search its settings for swipe, gesture, glide, or flow typing.
  4. Disable the matching option, then test in a text field.

Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software release. A setting path documented for Gboard should not be presented as a universal path for every Android keyboard. If the keyboard offers no separate gesture switch, its support documentation is the reliable source for that model and version.

How to confirm that swipe typing is really off

Use a short, repeatable test rather than judging by one accidental gesture.

  1. Open Messages, Notes, or another app with a normal text box.
  2. Tap an empty area of the text field so the keyboard appears.
  3. Drag across several adjacent letters as if spelling a short word, without lifting your finger.
  4. Lift your finger and check whether a word was inserted.
  5. Tap individual letters normally to confirm that regular typing still works.

If the drag still creates words, check the keyboard name again. The most common explanation is that the setting was changed for a keyboard that is not active. Also check that you edited the correct Gboard installation: Gboard on iPhone is configured in the Gboard app, while Gboard on Android is configured through Android’s virtual-keyboard settings or Gboard’s Android preferences.

Swipe typing is different from predictive text and autocorrection

Turning off swipe typing affects how letters are entered; it does not necessarily change what happens after letters are entered. Keep these functions separate:

Feature What it does Does disabling swipe typing disable it?
Swipe, slide, or glide typing Builds a word when you drag across letters without lifting your finger. Yes, when the keyboard’s glide or slide switch is turned off.
Predictive text Offers likely words or phrases above the keyboard. No.
Autocorrection Automatically changes some entered text according to the keyboard’s dictionary and rules. No.
Voice typing or dictation Enters text from spoken words. No.
Keyboard haptics Provides vibration or other tactile feedback when keys are pressed. No.

If your real problem is unwanted word substitutions, disabling glide typing alone may not solve it; investigate autocorrection or predictive-text settings separately. If the problem is vibration, look for keyboard haptics instead. Changing unrelated options can make typing less convenient without addressing the swipe gesture.

Language limitations and why the option may appear ineffective

Apple says QuickPath is not available for every language. Google likewise says Gboard glide typing does not work with all languages. Therefore, a language may already ignore swipe gestures even while the general feature switch is enabled, or behavior may differ when you change the keyboard language.

To diagnose a language-specific difference, check which language is active on the keyboard, switch to another installed language, and repeat the same test. If glide typing works in one language but not another, that can reflect language support rather than a failed setting. The safest way to stop the gesture across your normal use is still to disable the keyboard’s glide or slide option, then test each language you actually use.

Troubleshooting when words still appear after disabling the setting

The wrong keyboard was changed

Switching between keyboards is easy to do accidentally, especially on an iPhone with the globe key or on Android with a keyboard-switch control. Confirm the keyboard name while the unwanted behavior is happening. Then open that keyboard’s settings, not the settings for another installed keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting was changed in the wrong app

For Gboard on iPhone, use the Gboard app. For Gboard on Android, use the Android virtual-keyboard route to Gboard. Apple’s general Keyboard page controls Apple’s keyboard features; it does not serve as a universal control panel for every third-party keyboard.

The visible label is different

Look for equivalent terms such as glide typing, gesture typing, swipe typing, or slide to type. Do not turn off a setting merely because it contains the word “typing”; open its description and confirm that it refers to dragging across letters.

A customized Android menu moved the option

Use Settings search with the terms above, then open the result associated with the active keyboard. Google specifically advises users of customized Android versions to consult the device manufacturer when the documented path does not match the phone.

The behavior is not actually swipe typing

If words change after you tap letters, the cause may be autocorrection. If suggestions appear above the keyboard, that is predictive text. If text appears after you speak, that is voice typing. Test with individual taps and watch whether the issue occurs during the drag itself or only after normal typing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managing several keyboards on one device

Installing multiple keyboards can make troubleshooting confusing because each keyboard maintains its own preferences. You can leave several keyboards enabled and configure each one separately, or disable keyboards you never use so that you do not switch to them accidentally.

On iPhone, the keyboard-switch key cycles through enabled keyboards. On Android, the keyboard-switch control appears when more than one input method is available, although its placement depends on the phone’s navigation and software design. The important rule is that the preference belongs to the selected keyboard, not to the text app. Changing Messages, Notes, or a browser will not create a separate swipe-typing setting.

What not to change

  • Do not disable predictive text if your only goal is to stop dragging across letters.
  • Do not disable autocorrection unless automatic replacements are the problem.
  • Do not reset the entire keyboard dictionary as a first step; that removes learned words but does not specifically control glide typing.
  • Do not reinstall the keyboard before confirming which keyboard is active and where its glide setting lives.
  • Do not treat an Android Gboard path as proof of the menu path for a manufacturer keyboard.

A single feature switch is normally enough. Keeping the change narrow preserves the other typing aids you may still want.

Availability by platform and keyboard

The feature names are not interchangeable across every combination of device and keyboard. Apple uses QuickPath for its swipe feature and exposes the control as Slide to Type. Google uses Glide typing in Gboard. Gboard’s iPhone and Android apps have separate settings areas, so the same keyboard brand does not mean the same navigation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability can also depend on language. Apple and Google both document language limitations, and Android manufacturers can change menu structure. For that reason, use the exact keyboard name and feature label shown on your device rather than relying on a generic “turn off swipe” instruction.

Shortest reliable procedure

  1. Open a text field and identify the keyboard that appears.
  2. Open that keyboard’s own settings.
  3. Disable the option named Slide to Type, Glide typing, or an equivalent gesture-typing control.
  4. Return to the text field and test a deliberate finger drag.
  5. If a word still appears, repeat the identification step before changing any other keyboard feature.
