There is no universal satellite switch shared by all phones. On an iPhone, you can turn off a mobile operator’s satellite feature at Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Satellite (the labels can vary by country). That control is separate from Apple’s built-in Emergency SOS, Messages, Roadside Assistance and Find My satellite functions. On supported Pixel phones, Google documents how Satellite SOS starts during an emergency, but its current help page does not document a dedicated satellite-off switch.
Use the instructions for your phone below, and first identify whether you are trying to stop ordinary carrier-provided satellite data or prevent an emergency satellite session. Those are different services and may require different controls.
What “satellite connectivity” means on a phone
Modern phones can reach satellites in two fundamentally different ways:
- Network-operator-provided satellite service: A carrier can extend mobile connectivity through satellites when its service and your plan support it. On iPhone, Apple provides a specific setting for this category.
- Phone-maker satellite features: Apple and Google provide emergency or messaging functions that use satellite links when normal cellular and Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable. These functions are built into the operating system and are not necessarily controlled by the carrier setting.
Turning off one category does not automatically turn off the other. An iPhone carrier setting can stop the operator-provided feature while Apple’s own emergency flows remain available. Likewise, Google’s general Emergency SOS control is not documented as a switch that disables Pixel Satellite SOS specifically.

Eligibility depends on the phone model, operating-system version, country, carrier and, for some services, plan or activation status. Settings labels also change by region and software release, so compare the wording on your screen with the paths below rather than assuming every iPhone or Pixel has the same menu.
Identify the service before changing a setting
Look at where the option appears and what it is called. A setting under a specific mobile-data line points to a carrier feature. A prompt that appears while you are attempting an emergency call, or a tool labeled Emergency SOS, Messages via satellite or Find My via satellite, points to a phone-maker feature. A SAT indicator can also belong to the operator service rather than Apple’s built-in tools.
This distinction matters for privacy, billing and safety decisions. Turning off a carrier option may prevent routine satellite-enhanced data for that line, but it does not necessarily remove emergency functions. Conversely, changing an emergency setting can affect how quickly you can request help, without changing a carrier’s satellite plan. If your goal is simply to avoid accidental use or charges, ask the carrier which service is chargeable and whether selected apps are included.

Turn off a carrier’s satellite feature on iPhone
Apple’s September 18, 2026 support documentation gives this path for network-operator-provided satellite features:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Data. In some regions this menu is labeled Cellular.
- Tap Mobile Data Options (or the equivalent regional label).
- If the iPhone has two active SIMs, select the relevant network provider or phone number.
- Tap Satellite.
- Turn the satellite feature off.
This switch applies to the selected operator line. With dual SIM, changing the setting for one number does not necessarily change the setting for the other; repeat the check for each line whose operator offers satellite service.
After switching it off, return to the same menu and confirm the control still shows the off state. Do not use an emergency call as a test. If you are checking whether ordinary data has stopped, ask the carrier to confirm the account-side status instead of deliberately moving into an area without coverage.
If the Satellite menu is missing
A missing Satellite item in Mobile Data Options usually means the network operator does not offer or support its satellite feature for that line, country or plan. It does not prove that the iPhone lacks Apple’s separate built-in satellite capabilities.

Check the active line before concluding that the option is unavailable. On a dual-SIM iPhone, the menu can differ between numbers. A recently changed SIM, eSIM or carrier plan can also alter which controls are offered. If the carrier advertises the feature but the menu never appears, provide support with the model, iOS version, country, plan and exact line selected.
When a provider supports only selected apps
Some operators may offer satellite data only for specific apps. If your carrier provides that type of service, ask it whether app-level controls exist. Apple’s general switch does not document a separate control for every provider-specific app policy.
An app restriction is not the same as turning off the phone’s satellite hardware or Apple’s emergency tools. Ask whether the carrier can remove the feature from your plan, block particular applications, or merely stop automatic use. The answer can differ by country and subscription.
Apple’s built-in satellite features are a separate system
Apple lists several functions that can use satellite connectivity on supported iPhones:
- Emergency SOS via satellite
- Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Messages via satellite
- Find My via satellite
These features are reached through Connection Assistant or a feature-specific emergency, messaging or location flow, generally when the iPhone has no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. The Apple support page reviewed for this article does not document one global setting that disables all of them. Do not assume that switching off the carrier option above removes emergency access.
Why the iPhone may still show satellite options
When cellular or Wi-Fi service is available, Apple says the Settings Satellite option for its built-in functions does not appear. In that situation, the Satellite control in Control Center opens a demonstration rather than starting a live connection. The live assistance flow becomes relevant when the phone determines that normal networks are unavailable and the feature is supported in your location.
Can you disable one Apple satellite feature?
The cited Apple documentation describes how the features work, but it does not provide a single documented switch for disabling Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages and Find My together. A feature-specific screen may have its own permissions or availability rules, but do not infer that hiding one option blocks the others. If you need to restrict a particular function for a workplace, family or managed device, check the controls for that exact iOS version or ask Apple support what is supported.

Satellite communication is not equivalent to ordinary mobile data. Apple states that, in ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and the horizon, a message might take 30 seconds or more to send. Trees, buildings, mountains, weather and the phone’s orientation can make the exchange take longer or fail.

Apple also says its own satellite features are included at no charge for two years after activation of an iPhone 14 or later. That is an eligibility offer for Apple’s features, not a promise that every carrier satellite plan or operator feature is free. The offer also does not mean every country, carrier or iPhone model has the same availability.
Disaster exception for operator service
Apple cautions that, during certain disasters, a network operator may provide satellite-based mobile data even when everyday operator satellite features have been turned off. The off switch is therefore an ordinary-use preference, not a guarantee that an operator can never deliver emergency network service under exceptional conditions.

If avoiding all network-assisted connectivity is a safety or compliance requirement, discuss the carrier’s disaster policy and account controls. A phone setting alone may not satisfy that requirement.
Pixel phones: what Satellite SOS does and does not provide
Google’s Pixel Phone Help documentation describes Satellite SOS as an emergency-call path for the following models in the United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska:
- Pixel 9
- Pixel 9 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro XL
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold
The documented flow starts with dialing the local emergency number. If the phone cannot connect through mobile or Wi-Fi networks, the dialer can offer Satellite SOS. You then start the satellite session and follow the on-screen positioning instructions.
Satellite SOS is not described as a general-purpose satellite-data mode that you launch whenever you want. Its availability is tied to the listed models, location and emergency-call conditions. A Pixel purchased elsewhere, moved to another country or running a different software build may show different behavior.

If you want to change the general emergency gesture or call behavior, Google’s documented path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Tap Emergency SOS.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Turn off Emergency SOS.
This changes the general Emergency SOS feature. It should not be presented as proof that every Pixel satellite capability is disabled. For a particular Pixel model, software build or country, check the current on-device wording and Google’s support information before relying on a setting to block satellite access.
Turning off an emergency gesture can reduce accidental calls, but it can also remove a rapid way to request help. Make sure everyone who uses the phone understands the change, especially if the device is carried in an area with unreliable coverage.

Choose the right action for your goal
You want to stop ordinary carrier-provided satellite data
On an iPhone, use the Mobile Data or Cellular path and turn off Satellite for the affected operator line. If the menu is absent, the operator may not support the service, so there may be nothing to disable in that category. On a Pixel, the cited documentation does not describe a comparable carrier-satellite toggle; ask the operator for a plan-specific control if it advertises satellite mobile service.
You want to prevent an emergency satellite session
There is no documented universal switch for this goal in the cited Apple or Google material. Apple does not provide one global control for all of its built-in satellite functions, and Google does not identify its general Emergency SOS setting as a Satellite SOS blocker. Disabling emergency functions can reduce access to help, so do not change them unless you understand the precise effect shown by your phone’s current software.
You are troubleshooting unexpected satellite indicators
First identify whether the indicator belongs to the operator or the phone maker. An operator-provided service may show a SAT status indicator, while Apple’s built-in tools appear through Connection Assistant or an individual feature. Record the exact status text, active SIM, model, operating-system version and country before contacting support; those details determine which service is being shown.
You are worried about cost or need for extra equipment
You do not need to buy a satellite phone, beacon, case, replacement part, tool or manual to change these settings. The relevant action is performed in Settings or through the phone’s emergency flow. Apple’s two-year inclusion applies to Apple’s own satellite features after activation of an iPhone 14 or later; carrier satellite plans, app limits and charges are separate questions that only the operator can answer.
Troubleshooting when the setting does not behave as expected
The iPhone path has no Satellite entry
- Confirm that you opened the settings for the correct SIM or phone number.
- Check whether the carrier actually offers satellite features in your country and on your plan.
- Verify that you are looking under Mobile Data or Cellular, then Mobile Data Options, rather than the Control Center demonstration.
- Remember that a missing carrier item does not remove Apple’s separate built-in satellite functions.
- Install no accessory or special app merely to reveal the setting; availability is controlled by the supported phone, software and operator.
The switch is off but satellite service appears during a disaster
Apple’s operator documentation allows for exceptional disaster response in which a carrier may provide satellite-based mobile data despite the everyday setting being off. This is an explicit limitation of the switch, not evidence that the phone ignored your setting.

You cannot start Pixel Satellite SOS
- Check the model: Google’s cited list covers Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
- Check the location: the documented US availability excludes Hawaii and Alaska.
- Begin by dialing the local emergency number, as Google’s flow does not describe Satellite SOS as a standalone app you launch at any time.
- Ensure that mobile and Wi-Fi service is actually unavailable; Satellite SOS is offered as an emergency alternative when those networks cannot connect.
- Follow the on-screen positioning instructions and move to an area with a clear view of the sky if the phone requests it.
A menu label differs from the instructions
Apple notes that labels can differ by region, and carriers can customize availability. Look for the equivalent of Mobile Data or Cellular, Mobile Data Options, and Satellite. On Pixel, Google’s Safety & emergency and Emergency SOS labels are the relevant names in the documented path. If your build uses different wording, use the Settings search field for “Satellite” or “Emergency SOS,” then confirm the result’s description before changing it.
You are trying to remove all satellite capability from a phone
The cited documentation does not establish a supported way to guarantee that outcome. Turning off the iPhone operator setting addresses only that operator’s service. Turning off Pixel’s general Emergency SOS changes emergency behavior but is not documented to disable Satellite SOS. A phone may also retain feature-specific Apple satellite flows. Treat “all satellite capability” as a broader requirement than the controls currently documented.
Verification checklist
After changing a setting, use this checklist to confirm what changed without placing an unnecessary emergency call:
- Write down the phone model, operating-system version, country and active carrier.
- On an iPhone with dual SIM, confirm which number you edited.
- Reopen the same menu and verify that the carrier Satellite switch remains off.
- Check whether any remaining satellite option belongs to Apple’s built-in feature flow rather than the carrier menu.
- On Pixel, distinguish the general Emergency SOS status from the separate Satellite SOS behavior described by Google.
- Do not test by dialing emergency services solely to see whether satellite appears. Use the documented flow only when you have a genuine emergency.
What to tell your carrier or device support team
If the controls do not match your phone, provide support with the exact details that affect eligibility: model name, software version, country, carrier, plan, active SIM or phone number, the menu path you followed and the wording of any SAT or Satellite indicator. Ask whether the service is carrier-provided, limited to particular apps, restricted to certain plans or subject to disaster-response exceptions. This prevents support from treating a carrier feature and a phone-maker emergency feature as the same product.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off satellite on my iPhone?
For a carrier-provided feature, open Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Mobile Data Options, select the relevant line if you use dual SIM, tap Satellite and turn it off. This does not document a way to disable Apple’s built-in satellite features globally.
Why is there no Satellite option in my iPhone settings?
The operator may not offer or support satellite service for your line, country or plan. A missing carrier menu also does not prove that Apple’s separate Emergency SOS, Messages, Roadside Assistance or Find My satellite functions are unavailable.
Does turning off iPhone Satellite disable Emergency SOS via satellite?
No such global effect is documented. The Mobile Data setting controls network-operator-provided satellite service; Apple lists its built-in emergency and messaging features separately.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I disable Satellite SOS on Pixel?
Google documents Satellite SOS for specified Pixel 9 models and US locations, but its help page does not document a dedicated satellite-off switch. The general Emergency SOS setting is not confirmed to disable Satellite SOS.
Do I need a satellite plan or accessory to change these settings?
No. Changing the documented settings requires no accessory, replacement part or special tool. Carrier pricing and app-specific limits are separate questions for your operator.
Can a carrier satellite connection still appear after I turn it off?
Apple says a network operator may provide satellite-based mobile data during certain disasters even when ordinary operator satellite features are turned off. The setting is not an absolute guarantee against exceptional emergency service.
The Bottom Line
On iPhone, turn off a carrier’s satellite feature at Settings > Mobile Data/Cellular > Mobile Data Options > Satellite, selecting the right SIM first when necessary. Apple’s built-in satellite tools remain a separate system, and Google documents no dedicated Satellite SOS off switch for supported Pixel phones. Check the model, software, country, carrier and line before changing anything, and do not test emergency features with an unnecessary call.
