Samsung Galaxy phones do not document a universal per-app switch that hides only one app’s status-bar icon while leaving all of its other notifications unchanged. On One UI 7, the documented status-bar control is global. For an individual app, you can disable its notifications, change specific notification categories, make alerts silent, or use broader Do not disturb controls. Those choices affect notification delivery or other surfaces as well as the icon.
The right setting depends on whether you want to remove one icon permanently, stop the app from alerting you, hide only silent icons, or temporarily hide status-bar icons for every app. The guide below separates those outcomes so you can choose without accidentally losing important alerts.
First, identify what you want to turn off
“Status-bar notifications” normally means the small notification icons beside the time and system indicators at the top of the Galaxy screen. That icon is only one part of Android’s notification system. A notification can also appear as a pop-up, remain on the notification shade, show content on the lock screen, or produce an app icon badge. Each surface has different controls.

If your requirement is literally “hide the icon from App A but keep every App A alert and notification-shade entry exactly as before,” Samsung’s documented menus do not establish that as a supported control on every current Galaxy model. Use the closest option below and check the categories available on your phone.

Use Samsung’s global status-bar icon setting
One UI 7 documents a single status-bar icon setting for the Galaxy device. It is the correct menu when you want to change how notification icons are displayed generally, rather than targeting one app.
“To control what appears in the status bar, navigate to and open Settings, then tap Notifications. Tap Advanced settings, tap Show notification icons, and then select your desired option.”
Steps on One UI 7
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Tap Show notification icons.
- Select the display option that best matches how you want notification icons handled on the status bar.
Samsung’s guide describes this as a device-wide choice. It does not provide an app selector in this path. Therefore, changing it will affect icons from other apps too. If you only want to change one app, leave this global setting alone and continue to the per-app controls.

Change notifications for one Galaxy app
Galaxy provides a per-app notification page. This is the most direct route when one application is generating unwanted alerts, but it is not an icon-only setting.
Turn off every notification from the app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Turn off Allow notifications.
With Allow notifications disabled, that app’s notifications are blocked rather than merely hidden from the status bar. You should expect the app to stop delivering the notification types controlled by that switch. This is appropriate for promotional or nonessential alerts, but not for an app whose messages, security warnings, calls, or background status you still need to receive.
Disable only a notification category
Many apps divide alerts into categories such as messages, reminders, downloads, account activity, or background status. On the app’s notification page, open the available categories and change only the category responsible for the unwanted alert. Category names and the number of categories are supplied by the app and can vary.

- Go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Tap the app you want to adjust.
- Open the app’s listed notification categories, if the page exposes them.
- Turn off or modify the specific category that is producing the status-bar icon.
- Leave other categories enabled if you still need their alerts.
This approach narrows the change to one type of notification, but it still controls that category’s delivery and behavior. It is not a documented promise that the category will continue operating in every other way while only its icon disappears.
When this is the safest choice
- Use Allow notifications when you want the app completely quiet.
- Use a category switch when one kind of alert is unwanted but other alerts from the same app matter.
- Do not disable the category for authentication codes, safety alerts, calls, or time-sensitive work unless you have another reliable way to notice them.
Make one app silent, then consider hiding silent icons
If you want the app to remain available in the notification shade but do not want it to interrupt you, first inspect the app’s notification category for a silent or low-interruption behavior. The exact controls depend on the app and Galaxy software.
Android also documents a general preference named Hide silent notifications in status bar. When that preference is available, it can keep silent notifications out of the status bar while they remain part of the notification system. Android warns that notification settings vary by device, so a Galaxy model or software version may not show the same label or placement.
Check for the silent-icon preference
- Open Settings and use the Settings search field.
- Search for Hide silent notifications in status bar or for silent notifications.
- If the result appears, open it and enable the option.
- Return to the selected app’s notification categories and make the relevant category silent, where that category offers the choice.
- Send or wait for a test notification and check both the status bar and notification shade.
This is a compromise rather than a Samsung per-app icon switch. The preference is general, and another app’s silent notification can be affected as well. If the search produces no result, your model or software may not expose that Android control.
Hide status-bar icons temporarily with Do not disturb
For meetings, sleep, driving, or another short period when you want a clean status bar, Galaxy’s Do not disturb mode can hide status-bar icons while the mode is active. Samsung documents Hide status bar icons among Do not disturb’s notification-hiding controls.
Configure the temporary mode
- Open Settings.
- Open Notifications, then select Do not disturb. On some Galaxy versions, you may reach Do not disturb through a similarly named sound or mode setting.
- Review the mode’s notification and visibility controls.
- Enable Hide status bar icons if that option is present.
- Choose the duration or schedule appropriate for the occasion, then activate Do not disturb.
This hides icons during the active mode rather than permanently changing one app. Depending on the rest of your Do not disturb configuration, calls, messages, alarms, or selected people and apps may still be allowed through. Test the mode before relying on it for an important event.

Do not confuse the status-bar icon with other app indicators
A request to remove an “app notification” can refer to several different things. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Status-bar icon
This is the small symbol at the top of the screen. One UI 7’s Show notification icons control governs its display globally.
Notification shade entry
Pulling down from the top opens the notification shade. Turning off an app or category can stop its notification from being posted; hiding a silent icon may leave the notification available in the shade even when its status-bar symbol is absent.
Pop-up notification
A pop-up is the banner or heads-up alert that appears over the current screen. Samsung’s One UI 8 guidance describes per-app pop-up controls, but those controls govern pop-up behavior, not a guaranteed status-bar-only change.
Lock-screen notification
Lock-screen content visibility is a separate per-app or notification setting on supported software. Hiding lock-screen content does not, by itself, establish that the status-bar icon will be hidden.
App icon badge
The small number or dot on an app’s launcher icon is a badge. It is separate from the status bar and must be adjusted through the relevant badge or home-screen notification setting if you want to change it.
Choose the least disruptive solution

What changes between One UI versions and Galaxy models
Settings names and paths can vary by Galaxy model, carrier software, language, and One UI release. Samsung’s One UI 8 guidance includes per-app controls for pop-up styles and lock-screen content visibility, but it does not document a per-app status-bar-only switch. The One UI 7 path for the global icon setting may therefore look different on a newer or older phone even when the function is similar.

Find a moved setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search icon or search field.
- Search for Show notification icons to find the global status-bar control.
- Search for App notifications to reach the per-app list.
- Search for Do not disturb or Hide status bar icons for the temporary mode.
If a search result is absent, do not assume that another menu with a similar name provides the same function. Open the app’s notification page and inspect the categories and visibility options that your software actually exposes.

The app is still showing an icon after you changed a category
Check whether the icon belongs to a different category from the one you changed. Reopen Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] and review every listed category that could generate the alert. An app can post more than one notification type.
You silenced the app but still see an icon
Silencing and hiding silent icons are separate actions. Confirm whether your Galaxy exposes Android’s Hide silent notifications in status bar preference. If it does not, the silent notification may remain represented in the status bar even though it no longer makes sound or a pop-up.
You cannot find “Show notification icons”
Use Settings search with that exact phrase, then try the broader word notification. The menu may have moved in your One UI release. Remember that this is the global icon control, not an app-specific selector.

Open Do not disturb and verify that Hide status bar icons is enabled. Also check that Do not disturb is currently active rather than merely scheduled for a later time. The setting affects the active mode, so icons can reappear as soon as the mode ends.
You turned off notifications by mistake
Return to Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] and turn Allow notifications back on. Then review the app’s categories and restore only the category settings you need. Test with a noncritical notification before depending on the app again.

Practical examples
A shopping app’s promotions are cluttering the bar
Open the app’s notification page and disable the promotional category if one is listed. Keep order, delivery, or account categories enabled. If the app provides no category separation, disabling all notifications also disables the useful ones, so use that option only if missing those alerts is acceptable.
A work app must remain available but should not interrupt
Set the relevant category to silent if the app offers that behavior. Then look for Android’s silent-notification hiding preference. This may remove the icon while preserving the notification shade entry, but availability and results depend on the Galaxy software.
You want no icons during a presentation
Use Do not disturb and enable Hide status bar icons for the presentation period. Set exceptions deliberately so an urgent call or alarm is not blocked unintentionally. When the mode ends, the normal status-bar behavior returns.
Restore normal notification behavior
To undo a change, return to the same control that created it. Re-enable Allow notifications for a blocked app, turn a changed category back on, disable the silent-icon preference if you want silent icons visible, or turn off Do not disturb and its icon-hiding option. If you changed the global Show notification icons setting, select the preferred overall display option again.
The key limitation is scope: Galaxy documents a global status-bar icon setting and separate per-app notification controls, but not a guaranteed per-app switch that hides only the icon. Choose the narrowest control your model offers, verify the result with a test notification, and keep critical categories enabled.
