To stop marketing texts from one business in Google Messages, open that business conversation, open its menu, and choose Unsubscribe. Confirm the request if prompted. Google sends a STOP (or a region-appropriate opt-out message) from your number, which should stop that sender’s non-essential messages while allowing requested essentials such as one-time passwords or boarding passes.
If you need every message from the sender to stop, use Block & report spam instead. If you only want fewer interruptions, set that conversation’s notifications to Silent. These controls solve different problems, and the labels can vary by device, message channel, and country.
How do I turn off promotional messages in Google Messages?
Use the sender-level Unsubscribe control first. It is designed for promotional or other non-essential business messages, rather than for every text that business might send.

- Open Google Messages and select the conversation containing the promotions.
- Open the conversation menu. Depending on your phone and app layout, this may be a three-dot More button or another menu control.
- Tap Unsubscribe. In some interfaces, the same control appears at the bottom of the conversation.
- Select a reason if Google asks for one.
- Confirm Unsubscribe, or choose Unsubscribe & report if you also want to report the messages.
Google says the app sends a STOP message, or an equivalent opt-out message required in your region, from your phone number. The business is expected to process that request. Google describes the intended result as no longer receiving non-essential messages from that sender.
What you should see after confirming
The conversation may stay in your inbox. Unsubscribing changes the business’s subscription status; it does not delete your message history. A confirmation or preference-management message may still appear, and a requested transactional message can still be delivered.
What Unsubscribe stops—and what it does not
It targets non-essential messages
Promotions, marketing announcements, and similar optional traffic are the main targets. The opt-out does not necessarily cancel every relationship with the business. If you have asked for a one-time password, boarding pass, delivery update, appointment notice, or another essential transaction message, those messages may still arrive.
For example, unsubscribing from an airline’s offers does not necessarily prevent a boarding pass you requested from arriving. Likewise, a retailer may still send an order or delivery update while stopping sales announcements.
It can leave the conversation visible
Unsubscribing is not the same as deleting the thread. Google says the conversation can remain in your inbox, and a business can still send essential messages that you requested. You may also receive a confirmation or preference-management message related to the opt-out.
It depends on the business honoring the request
The STOP request is the mechanism, but the business controls its subscription list. A delayed message may have been queued before the opt-out was processed. Continued non-essential messages after a reasonable processing period are a reason to use Block & report spam if you no longer want any contact.
Do not treat one immediately arriving message as proof that the control failed. Check whether it is a transactional message, an opt-out confirmation, or a message sent before the business updated its list.

How to stop all messages from a business
If your goal is “never show me anything from this sender,” open the business conversation menu and choose Block & report spam. Google moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. The exact confirmation wording can differ by app version.
Blocking versus reporting
Blocking is the delivery-control decision. Reporting is a separate decision that tells Google the sender or message may be spam. Google says a business-message spam report can send sender information and up to the 10 most recent business messages to Google, and the carrier may be involved. Do not report a legitimate business merely because you no longer want its promotions; unsubscribe or block without reporting when that better describes the situation.
What blocking means for useful messages
Blocking can also prevent wanted codes, receipts, boarding passes, or support replies from that sender. If you still depend on the business for those messages, use Unsubscribe rather than blocking.

If you later need the sender again, look under Spam & blocked and unblock the conversation before trying to subscribe. A blocked thread is not the same as an unsubscribed thread.

How to quiet promotions without unsubscribing
Use conversation-level notification controls when the problem is interruption rather than delivery.
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Open the conversation details. Depending on the phone, tap the contact or business name at the top, or open the conversation menu and choose its details.
- Choose Notifications.
- Select Silent.
Silent notifications keep the messages in the thread and do not send an opt-out request. You can open the conversation later and change its notification setting if you decide that alerts are useful again.
This is useful for a store whose coupons you may want to read, or for a service whose updates matter but do not justify a sound or vibration. It does not reduce the number of messages delivered and does not change the business’s mailing list.
Spam protection is not a promotional opt-out
Google Messages has a separate spam-protection feature for suspected spam and scams. It is not a universal switch that unsubscribes you from every company’s marketing list, and changing it does not replace the sender-level steps above.
Turning spam protection off
Only turn this feature off if you specifically want to disable Google’s spam filtering. Google documents this path:
- Tap your profile picture or initials in Google Messages.
- Open Messages settings.
- Tap Protection & Safety.
- Open Spam protection.
- Turn off Enable spam protection.
The option may not appear on every device. Google says spam protection can use on-device machine-learning models and may check message URLs with Google. Disabling it can make suspicious texts more visible; it does not ask a business to remove you from its promotional list.
For most readers, leaving spam protection enabled while separately unsubscribing from legitimate business promotions is the safer combination.
What to do with Google Messages’ new-business prompt in India
Google documents an additional consent prompt for some messages from businesses in India that have not contacted you before. The dialog can offer Allow, Block and unsubscribe, or Close.
- Allow permits the conversation.
- Block and unsubscribe blocks the business and sends the opt-out action.
- Close hides the message for now; the prompt can appear again.
If you blocked a business through that India-specific dialog and later change your mind, Google says to unblock it under Spam and blocked, then open the conversation and resubscribe.
Why you may not see Unsubscribe
Unsubscribe is not guaranteed for every conversation. Eligibility depends on the message channel, sender type, region, device, and the business’s messaging setup.
Message channel and sender type
Google’s newer dedicated help information lists the control for RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. For SMS or MMS, it lists availability in the United States for short codes and alphanumeric senders. A separate RCS help page also lists the Netherlands, so Google’s published regional lists are not fully consistent.

If it is absent, do not assume that a hidden universal switch exists. The sender or message type may not support the control in your region.

Interface differences
Phone manufacturers, app releases, and message types can place the menu in different locations. Look for a three-dot More button, the business name at the top of the thread, or an action at the bottom of the conversation. Google does not publish a universal app-version matrix that guarantees identical wording on every phone.
What to try when the control is absent
- Confirm that you opened the actual business conversation rather than a notification preview.
- Check the conversation menu and scroll to the bottom of the thread for an inline action.
- Determine whether the message is RCS, SMS, or MMS; eligibility differs by channel and region.
- If you still need some messages, silence the conversation while you decide whether blocking is acceptable.
- If you want no contact and the sender appears suspicious, use Block & report spam.
There is no documented universal workaround that creates an Unsubscribe button for an ineligible sender. If the control is missing, the sender may still provide its own opt-out instructions, but Google Messages cannot guarantee that a generic reply will produce the same result.
How to receive messages from a business again
If you unsubscribed but later need that business, open the conversation menu and choose Subscribe, when that option is available. Google may also show the option at the bottom of the conversation.

Remember that subscribing again is distinct from restoring notifications. After resubscribing, check the conversation’s notification setting if you previously chose Silent.
Privacy considerations for RCS business conversations
When you unsubscribe from an RCS business conversation, Google says it sends the STOP request from your number. The business is responsible for honoring that request. This is different from reporting spam.
Google’s RCS information says verified RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. Businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may access message content for delivery and related purposes. If you choose to report a business message as spam, Google says sender information and up to the 10 most recent business messages may be sent to Google, and the carrier may be involved. Unsubscribing and reporting therefore have different data-handling consequences.
Choose Unsubscribe when your issue is marketing consent. Choose reporting when the content genuinely appears to be spam, deceptive, or abusive. The two actions can be offered together, but they are not interchangeable.
Examples of the right choice
You still need order updates
Use Unsubscribe for a retailer’s sale announcements. Keep the conversation unblocked so a receipt, delivery notice, or support response can still arrive.
You closed an account and want no contact
Use Block. Add the reporting option only if the messages are actually unwanted spam or otherwise suspicious.
You want to read coupons later
Choose Silent. This keeps the messages available without changing the business subscription.

Use the spam-reporting path rather than treating it as an ordinary marketing preference. Be aware that Google may receive sender details and up to 10 recent messages from the business thread.

A practical decision checklist
- Only marketing is unwanted: choose Unsubscribe.
- You still need receipts, codes, or travel updates: unsubscribe rather than block.
- Every message is unwanted: choose Block; add reporting only when the message genuinely appears to be spam or abusive.
- Alerts are the problem: set the conversation to Silent.
- You are seeing many unrelated suspicious texts: review Spam protection; do not confuse it with a promotional opt-out.
- You are in India and see the new-business dialog: use Block and unsubscribe when you want both actions.
- The control is missing: treat that as an eligibility or regional limitation, not as proof that the sender has already opted you out.
Common failure modes and fixes
Promotions continue immediately after unsubscribing
A queued message may have been sent before the business processed the STOP request. Wait for the sender’s system to update. If non-essential messages continue and you no longer need any contact, block the sender.
Essential messages disappear after blocking
Blocking can stop the same sender’s codes, receipts, or travel information. Unblock the conversation under Spam & blocked if you need those messages, then use Subscribe where available.
You tapped Close on the India prompt
Closing hides that instance but does not create a permanent subscription choice; Google says the prompt can return. Use the prompt’s Allow or Block and unsubscribe option when it appears again.

You disabled spam protection but still receive promotions
That setting controls filtering for suspected spam and scams. It does not change a business’s marketing subscription. Return to the business conversation and use Unsubscribe or Block.
You cannot find the conversation after blocking
Open the Messages menu and look in Spam & blocked. Blocking moves the thread there rather than leaving it in the ordinary inbox.

Why is Unsubscribe missing in my country?
Availability varies by region, message type, sender type, device, and business setup. Google lists RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom; another RCS help page also lists the Netherlands.
