Amazon does not provide one master switch that removes every personalized suggestion, advertisement, Alexa prompt, and Echo Show promotion. To reduce personalization, change the control that matches the surface you want to affect: use Improve Your Recommendations and Your Browsing History for shopping suggestions, Your Ads Privacy Choices for personalized advertising, and Alexa or Echo Show privacy settings for device content.
These controls work independently. Excluding one product, deleting browsing activity, or opting out of interest-based ads can reduce particular signals without making Amazon completely recommendation-free or ad-free.
Which Amazon setting controls what you see?
Start by identifying where the unwanted content appears. Amazon documents shopping recommendations, advertising preferences, browsing activity, Alexa data, and Echo Show suggested content as separate controls. A setting that changes one surface should not be treated as a universal privacy switch.

This comparison has three useful axes. The first is the surface: store, advertising, Alexa, or Echo Show. The second is the activity or data control: exclude an item, remove history, or change an ad preference. The third is the expected effect: limiting one signal or ad category is different from removing every suggestion.

Menu names and their location can differ between Amazon marketplaces, the website, the mobile app, the Alexa app, and device software. If a label is not where expected, search the current account or device settings for the exact name of the control. A missing label can reflect a regional or software-version difference rather than a problem with your account.
Limit product recommendations in the Amazon store
Use Improve Your Recommendations
Amazon’s Privacy Notice identifies Improve Your Recommendations as the place to manage store recommendations. The page is useful when the problem is a particular category, product, or past purchase influencing what appears on the home page, product pages, or recommendation carousels.
- Sign in to the Amazon account whose recommendations you want to change.
- Open the account or profile area and choose Improve Your Recommendations. On some versions, use Amazon’s settings search to find that label.
- Review the items and activity Amazon presents as recommendation inputs.
- For an item you do not want influencing suggestions, turn off the Use this item for recommendations option associated with it.
- Return to the store and allow time for recommendation surfaces to refresh. Existing pages or cached app content may not change immediately.
Amazon specifically says that unchecking Use this item for recommendations removes recommendations you do not want to see for each item. This is a selective exclusion, not a promise that all recommendations disappear. Treat the page as a way to correct the signals attached to particular products, not as a complete history-erasure tool.
Review the list with a specific goal in mind. You might remove a gift bought for someone else, a work purchase that does not represent your personal interests, a one-time seasonal item, or a product from a category you no longer want emphasized. Excluding those items can make future suggestions more relevant without changing every account preference.
Exclude a single product instead of changing everything
If one purchase or viewed product is producing irrelevant suggestions, use the item-level toggle rather than trying to disable the entire shopping experience. For example, you can exclude a one-time gift, a product bought for another person, or an item that no longer reflects your interests.
Check the toggle for every relevant item. Excluding one product does not automatically exclude related purchases, searches, reviews, Lists, or Alexa shopping conversations that Amazon may also use to personalize the store. If several items belong to the same unwanted category, review each relevant entry rather than assuming one exclusion covers the category.
Do not confuse hiding a recommendation with removing an order from your account. The control described by Amazon changes whether the item is used for recommendations; it is not presented as an order-cancellation, invoice-removal, or complete account-record deletion feature.

Edit Your Browsing History
Amazon’s Privacy Notice also points to Your Browsing History. Removing entries is appropriate when recently viewed products are driving “related to items you’ve viewed” suggestions or when you do not want an accidental visit to remain part of your browsing context.

- Open Your Browsing History from the account area or find it through Amazon’s settings search.
- Remove individual products that should no longer influence browsing-based suggestions, using the controls shown beside each entry.
- If the page offers a broader history-management option in your marketplace, review its wording carefully before applying it.
- Afterward, revisit Improve Your Recommendations if a purchase or another activity still affects suggestions.
Browsing history is only one signal. Clearing it should not be described as deleting all personalization data or as an account-wide opt-out. A product can continue to be relevant because of an order, search, review, List, or Alexa interaction even after its browsing-history entry is removed.
History changes can also appear unevenly. A recommendation tile that was already loaded in a browser tab or app may remain until the page is refreshed, while another page may update sooner. Check the account setting itself first; visual changes on every Amazon page are not guaranteed to happen simultaneously.
Browse without linking new activity to your account
Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes a narrower way to browse without linking browsing history to an account: sign out and block browser cookies. This applies to that browsing situation; it is not a global request for Amazon to stop using all account, device, or transaction data.

- Use your browser’s cookie controls to block cookies, understanding that some site functions may become less convenient or unavailable.
- Do not assume that this changes activity already stored on the account or activity from another signed-in device.
This approach is most useful for a temporary, unlinked browsing session. It may interfere with sign-in persistence or other site functions, so it is different from changing the recommendation settings on your normal account. If you sign back in, activity can again be associated with that account according to the settings and technologies Amazon uses.
Change personalized advertising preferences
Personalized ads are a separate privacy choice from product recommendations. If advertisements are the concern, open Your Ads Privacy Choices in the Amazon account settings and change the available preference for personalized advertising.
- Sign in to Amazon.
- Open the privacy or advertising settings area and select Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Review the explanation of interest-based advertising and the current selection.
- Choose the available setting that declines personalized or interest-based ads, then save or confirm it if Amazon presents a confirmation control.
- Repeat the check on other browsers or devices if the preference is presented separately there.
Read the wording on the page before confirming. The setting concerns the use of information for personalized advertising; it does not describe a deletion of your shopping account or a removal of every type of advertising. If Amazon offers a separate control for a browser, app, or device, apply it where you actually see the ads.
Opting out of interest-based advertising does not mean that Amazon stops showing advertisements. It also does not necessarily stop personalized recommendations or similar features. Amazon’s Alexa guidance explicitly warns that a person may still receive personalized recommendations after declining cookies used for interest-based ads.

Ads can therefore remain contextual, operational, sponsored, or otherwise non-personalized. The change affects the advertising preference described on that page, not every form of content ranking in the Amazon store. If your goal is to stop product suggestions, return to Improve Your Recommendations; if your goal is to limit Echo Show promotions, use the device-specific controls as well.
Control Alexa personalization and Echo Show content
Alexa-enabled devices have their own privacy and suggested-content controls. Amazon’s Alexa and device guidance is separate from its general shopping recommendation instructions, and the exact labels can vary by country and software version.

Review Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data
- Open the Alexa app or the Alexa privacy area associated with your account.
- Choose Alexa Privacy to review available activity and privacy controls.
- Open Manage Your Alexa Data to inspect or manage the Alexa information and settings offered for your account.
- Look for controls related to interest-based ads, suggested content, or device personalization, and read the description before changing each one.
- Apply the change to the relevant household or device profile where Amazon provides that choice.
These controls can affect Alexa activity and device content, but they should not be treated as replacements for Improve Your Recommendations, Your Browsing History, or Your Ads Privacy Choices. A shopping recommendation controlled through the Amazon account may remain even after an Alexa ad preference changes, and an Alexa setting may not rewrite the store’s recommendation inputs.
Before changing a household device, check which account and profile it uses. Shared Echo devices can be used by more than one person, while the account settings you change belong to the account or profile currently selected. This is why a change can appear ineffective if another household member is using a different profile.

What you can and cannot do on an Echo Show
Echo Show devices may display suggested content and sponsored ads on their screens. Amazon’s UK help guidance says that sponsored Echo Show ads cannot all be turned off. It does provide a way to skip an individual ad: swipe from right to left on the screen.
Turning off interest-based ads does not create an ad-free Echo Show. It may change how advertising is personalized while leaving sponsored content or other suggestions visible. Use the device’s current suggested-content and privacy settings to limit what is available, then use the swipe gesture when an unavoidable sponsored ad appears.
The Echo Show information cited here comes from Amazon UK support material. Labels, availability, and behavior can differ in another country or with a different device software version. If your device uses different wording, search its settings for suggested content, advertising, privacy, or Alexa data rather than assuming a missing label means the control has been removed.
Why recommendations can continue after you change a setting
Amazon describes several inputs to the shopping experience in its About You announcement. They include purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, product reviews, Lists, and searches. Browsing history is another separately managed activity.

These signals explain why a recommendation may survive a single cleanup. They also explain why excluding an item is useful for a narrowly defined problem but cannot be expected to erase every related suggestion. Amazon does not state in the cited material that one signal has a fixed percentage contribution, so a single deletion or opt-out should not be expected to neutralize all other inputs.
A practical sequence for reducing personalization
If you want the broadest reduction available through the documented controls, use the settings in this order:
- Exclude sensitive or irrelevant products: In Improve Your Recommendations, turn off Use this item for recommendations for individual items that should not shape suggestions.
- Edit browsing activity: Remove products from Your Browsing History that you no longer want used for browsing-based recommendations.
- Change ad personalization: Visit Your Ads Privacy Choices and decline personalized advertising if that is your preference.
- Review Alexa settings: Check Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data for interest-based ads and suggested-content choices.
- Adjust the Echo Show: Use the device’s current suggested-content controls and swipe away sponsored ads that cannot be disabled.
- Change future browsing behavior: When you need browsing that is not linked to the account, sign out and block cookies, accepting the resulting site limitations.
Use the sequence as a checklist, not as a promise of total removal. For example, someone who only wants to stop a gift from affecting the home page may need the first step alone. Someone concerned about ads should complete the advertising step even if no store recommendation is bothersome. Someone sharing an Echo Show should check the device profile as well as the account.
After making changes, test the exact surface that caused the concern. Look at the store while signed into the intended account, check the ad preference page, and inspect the Echo Show settings on the device itself. This separates a setting that was not saved from a setting that worked but cannot affect another content source.

Troubleshooting when recommendations do not change
The menu is missing
Amazon changes navigation by marketplace, account type, app release, and device software. Use the account settings search for the exact labels Improve Your Recommendations, Your Browsing History, and Your Ads Privacy Choices. In the Alexa app, search for Alexa Privacy or Manage Your Alexa Data.
Do not assume that the web path shown in an older help article will match the mobile app. The control name and its function are more reliable than a particular sequence of buttons. If your marketplace uses translated wording, search the privacy or recommendation area for the equivalent setting.
A recommendation remains after an item is excluded
Confirm that the item’s Use this item for recommendations toggle is actually unchecked, then check whether the same suggestion is being driven by a search, review, List, purchase, or Alexa interaction. Refreshing the page or reopening the app can help display the updated state, but Amazon does not promise instant removal from every surface.
Also check whether you excluded the exact item that appears in the recommendation. A related model, color, size, or separate listing can be a different entry. If the concern is a whole category, item-level exclusions may need to be repeated for the products that continue to supply signals.

Recheck that you changed Your Ads Privacy Choices, not only a store recommendation setting. The documented outcome is a change to personalized advertising, not removal of all ads. Echo Show sponsored ads are a specific exception: Amazon says they cannot all be turned off.
Seeing an ad after opting out is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the preference failed. It may be a non-personalized or sponsored placement. Check the preference page again and distinguish an advertising question from a store-ranking question.
Another household member still sees personalized content
Verify which Amazon account, profile, browser, or Alexa household device is active. A setting changed on one account does not automatically change another account’s history or preferences, and a device can surface content associated with its configured profile.
Shared devices are especially easy to misdiagnose. Confirm the account shown in the Alexa app, the profile associated with the Echo Show, and the browser account used to test store recommendations. Make the same adjustment for each account when appropriate.

- There is no documented single switch that removes every Amazon store recommendation.
- Deleting browsing history is not the same as deleting purchase history, reviews, Lists, searches, or Alexa shopping conversations.

Does deleting browsing history stop Amazon from using my purchases?
