Short answer: Yahoo does not currently document a single account setting that turns off every AI-generated result across Yahoo Search. In the Yahoo Search app, choose Search instead of Ask AI to use traditional results; the app remembers the last method you selected. If you administer a network, Yahoo documents a narrower block for its AI Chat endpoint: map chat.search.yahoo.com to search.yahoo.com in your router or proxy, preferably with a CNAME record.
Those controls have different scopes. The app selector affects the search experience for the person using that app, while the DNS mapping applies to everyone on a network and is limited to AI Chat. SafeSearch, result filters, personal results, and search-history settings serve different purposes and are not documented as AI-result switches.
What you can and cannot turn off
Yahoo calls its AI search experience Yahoo Scout. In the Yahoo Search app, the AI mode is labeled Ask AI. Yahoo documents these as separate ways to search: Search returns traditional Yahoo Search results, while Ask AI produces a response generated by Scout.

The first two rows are the only documented ways in this guide to avoid or limit Yahoo’s AI interfaces. The remaining settings can change what appears around your results, but Yahoo does not describe them as controls for Scout or AI answers.
Use traditional Search in the Yahoo Search app
Recognize the two modes
When the app presents a method selector, Search means the conventional Yahoo Search results page. Ask AI sends the question to Yahoo Scout and returns an AI-generated response, with the ability to continue using follow-up prompts. The wording and placement of the selector can vary by app version, so look for the mode label rather than a particular icon or screen position.
Switch away from Ask AI
- Open the Yahoo Search app.
- Find the search-method selector that shows the current mode, such as Ask AI.
- Select Search rather than Ask AI.
- Enter your query and submit it from the Search mode.
- Before a later search, check the selector again if you want to confirm that Search is still active.
Yahoo says the app saves the last selected search method automatically. After you choose Search, subsequent searches in that app should start in that method unless you change it. Availability of the selector and its exact labels depend on the app version and rollout, so an app that does not show these modes may not have the same control.
What this app setting does
- It keeps your searches in the traditional Search path instead of deliberately opening Ask AI.
- It is a per-user app choice, not a policy for other people on your Wi-Fi network.
- It does not establish that every AI element is removed from every Yahoo property or web page.
- It does not change the network-level Chat endpoint described in Yahoo’s administrator instructions.
If your goal is simply to stop selecting an AI answer mode when searching on a phone, this is the least disruptive option because it changes only the app behavior you control.
Block Yahoo AI Chat for an entire network
Yahoo documents a separate administrator control for AI Chat. The instruction is to map chat.search.yahoo.com to search.yahoo.com in a router or proxy server. Yahoo recommends making the mapping a CNAME entry so the block continues to work if the IP addresses used by search.yahoo.com change.

This is not an account preference and it is not a universal Yahoo AI shutoff. It affects users whose traffic relies on that router or proxy, and Yahoo’s wording limits the method to the Chat endpoint. It should therefore be used by a household, school, office, or other network administrator who understands that the change applies to everyone on the network.
Check the scope before changing DNS
- Confirm that you administer the router, DNS service, or proxy used by the network.
- Tell affected users that a Yahoo hostname is being redirected for the whole network.
- Record the existing DNS or host entry so it can be restored.
- Decide whether the requirement is specifically to block AI Chat or to keep one person in traditional Search mode. The app selector is more appropriate for the latter.
Create the mapping
- Sign in to the router, local DNS service, or proxy administration panel.
- Open the area for DNS overrides, host mappings, aliases, or CNAME records. The label differs by vendor.
- Create an entry whose hostname is
chat.search.yahoo.com. - Set its target or canonical name to
search.yahoo.com. - Save or apply the configuration according to the vendor’s instructions.
- Allow the network’s DNS behavior to update, then test from a device that is actually using that network.
Yahoo specifically recommends a CNAME rather than hard-coding an IP address. An IP can change; a CNAME continues to refer to the current name used for regular Yahoo Search. Do not substitute an unrelated DNS service, router model, or privacy product unless your own administrator documentation requires it.

Verify, maintain, or undo the change
Test the result from more than one device on the managed network, including a device that has not previously used the Chat address. The observable behavior can depend on the router, proxy, DNS cache, and client, so use the administration panel’s own status or lookup tools where available. If Chat remains reachable, verify that the device is using the intended DNS path and that the record was entered exactly as shown; then follow the router or proxy vendor’s procedure for refreshing or applying DNS changes.
To restore the previous behavior, remove the CNAME or host mapping and apply the saved configuration. Because this is a network-wide rule, removing it restores access for all users who depend on that network path.
Limits of the network method
- It is documented for AI Chat, not for every Yahoo Scout surface or every AI-generated component.
- It does not change the Search/Ask AI selector inside an individual app.
- It does not follow a user onto a different Wi-Fi network or a mobile-data connection.
- It requires administrator access and can affect people who did not request the change.
- Yahoo does not describe it as an account-level preference that travels with a signed-in user.
What to do on desktop and mobile web
Yahoo’s Scout help describes opening Scout on desktop or through Yahoo Search mobile web or the app, entering a question, and continuing with follow-up prompts. That documentation explains how to use Scout; it does not provide a global opt-out switch for AI-generated answers.

On the web, use the ordinary Yahoo Search entry point rather than opening Scout when you want conventional results. If your organization needs to prevent the Chat hostname for everyone, the router or proxy mapping is the documented control. Do not assume that selecting Search in the mobile app changes the behavior of a desktop browser, an unsigned session on another device, or a separate network.
If the interface you see has no Search/Ask AI selector, its labels or availability may differ from the app version described by Yahoo. In that case, there is no documented account setting in the available Yahoo Help material that guarantees suppression of all AI answers.
Do not mistake other Yahoo settings for AI controls
SafeSearch
SafeSearch is a content filter. Yahoo lists Strict, Moderate, and Off choices for filtering adult material. Changing SafeSearch can alter which pages appear, but Yahoo does not describe it as a way to disable Scout, Ask AI, or AI Chat.
Result filters
Filters such as All, News, Images, Videos, Local, and Shopping, along with a time range, narrow the type or age of results. They refine a query after it is submitted; they are not an AI on/off switch.
Personal results
Yahoo’s personal-results feature can add information such as package deliveries or deals from connected mail accounts. You can deselect personal results in Search Preferences. That limits personalization from connected services; it does not turn off Scout-generated responses.

Search history and iOS app settings
Search history and device-specific settings in the iOS app control history and app personalization. Yahoo describes those settings as applying to the iOS app, not as controls for AI answers. Clearing history therefore should not be presented as a way to disable Yahoo’s AI features.
Review Search Preferences without expecting an AI switch
Yahoo provides Search Preferences access on desktop and mobile. Signed-in preferences can be changed from computers or mobile devices, while preferences for an unsigned session are saved only on the specific device or computer. This distinction matters when a setting appears to work on one device but not another.
- Open Yahoo Search on the device or browser you use.
- Open Search Preferences from Yahoo’s search settings area.
- Review the listed options for SafeSearch, personal results, history, or other available personalization controls.
- Change only the setting that matches your goal, and save it if Yahoo presents a save action.
- For AI avoidance, return to the app’s Search/Ask AI selector or use the network administrator method for AI Chat; do not treat an unrelated preference as an AI guarantee.
The available material does not list an AI-results preference in the general Search Preferences page. A signed-in preference can follow you across supported devices, but the absence of an AI option there means you should not promise that it will remove generated answers.

Troubleshoot common outcomes
Ask AI appears again in the app
Open the method selector and choose Search again. Yahoo says the last selected method is saved, but an app update, a different app installation, or a changed interface can affect what you see. Confirm that the query is being submitted from Search rather than Ask AI; the labels may not be in the same place on every version.
One device is blocked but another is not
A DNS mapping applies only to devices using the configured router or proxy. Check whether the second device is on cellular data, another Wi-Fi network, a separate proxy, or a different DNS path. The network rule cannot follow a device away from the network where it was created.

AI Chat still opens after the mapping
Verify the hostname and target exactly: chat.search.yahoo.com should point to search.yahoo.com. Confirm that the record is a CNAME or the equivalent mapping supported by the administrator’s equipment, and follow the vendor’s procedure for applying DNS changes. If the result is still available, remember that Yahoo documents this method for AI Chat, not for every Yahoo AI feature.
AI-like information remains in a regular result page
The presence of an answer-style panel does not prove that the Chat endpoint was blocked or that the Search/Ask AI selector changed. The documented network mapping is limited in scope, and Yahoo does not document a universal account switch. Use the app selector where available and treat other AI surfaces as outside the guarantee of the Chat mapping.
Personal information looks like an AI result
Package-delivery notices, deals, or other information connected to mail can be personal results. Open Search Preferences and deselect personal results if that is the material you want to remove. This is separate from Scout and does not disable AI answers.

- Define whether the requirement is individual app behavior or a network-wide Chat block.
- For individual use, select Search instead of Ask AI in the Yahoo Search app.
- For a network, map
chat.search.yahoo.comtosearch.yahoo.comas a CNAME or supported equivalent. - Document who is affected and how to undo the mapping.
- Test from devices that use the managed network and from a device outside it so the scope is clear.
- Do not describe the mapping as a block of every Yahoo AI feature.
- Keep SafeSearch, result filters, personal results, and history decisions separate from AI policy.

For a personal Yahoo Search app, choose Search and avoid Ask AI; Yahoo says the app remembers that choice. For a managed network, the documented administrator option is a CNAME mapping from chat.search.yahoo.com to search.yahoo.com, which limits AI Chat for users on that network. Yahoo does not document a single account-level switch that turns off every AI-generated Yahoo Search result, so avoid treating either control as broader than its stated scope.
