To hide YouTube comments while watching a game trailer, turn on Restricted Mode. On a computer, open your profile menu, select Restricted Mode, and switch it on. On Android, go to Profile picture → Settings → General → Restricted Mode. YouTube says that when Restricted Mode is enabled, you cannot view comments on videos you watch. It is the only native viewer setting that removes the comment section across videos; YouTube does not provide viewers with a personal blocked-word list for another channel’s video.
The quickest way to hide comments on a game trailer
Restricted Mode is designed to limit potentially mature material, but its viewer-facing result is also useful when comment sections are distracting, offensive or full of spoilers. With the mode active, comments are not displayed on the videos you watch. The trailer itself may still be available, although some videos can also be filtered because Restricted Mode is broader than a comment-only switch.
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube in the browser where you watch trailers.
- Select your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Restricted Mode from the menu.
- Turn on Activate Restricted Mode.
Reload the trailer if the page was already open. The setting applies to that browser context, so repeat the procedure in every other browser, separate browser profile or computer account where you want comments hidden.
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Switch on Restricted Mode.
Return to the trailer after changing the setting. If you use YouTube in a mobile browser as well as in the app, check that browser separately; an app setting does not automatically configure every browser or device.

On Android TV
- Open YouTube on the television.
- Open Settings.
- Select Restricted Mode or, on some versions, Safety Mode.
- Enable the setting.
TV menus can vary by YouTube app version and device manufacturer. Look for the Restricted Mode or Safety Mode entry under YouTube’s own settings rather than the television’s general parental-control menu.
What Restricted Mode actually filters
Restricted Mode is an optional, broad content filter. YouTube evaluates signals such as a video’s metadata, title, language, Community Guidelines reviews and age restrictions when deciding what to limit. Because it is not a custom comment classifier, it cannot be configured to hide only insults while leaving ordinary debate visible.
What you gain
- The comment section is hidden on videos you watch while the mode is active.
- You can apply the setting without owning or moderating the game publisher’s channel.
- The same viewer setting can reduce exposure to mature material elsewhere on YouTube.
What you give up
- Some videos may no longer appear in search or recommendations, even when the only thing you wanted to avoid was comments.
- The filter can hide borderline or mature content that you personally consider acceptable.
- There is no sensitivity slider, per-channel exception or viewer-maintained list of words to block.
YouTube distinguishes Restricted Mode from an age restriction. Age restrictions are applied to particular content under YouTube’s age rules; Restricted Mode is a viewer preference that intentionally limits the overall YouTube experience.

If a game-trailer page has no comments, do not assume the creator deleted a specific discussion. Several different controls produce a similar result.

Restricted Mode is enabled
This is the most direct explanation when comments disappear across many unrelated videos. Check the profile menu on desktop or Settings → General in the Android app. If the mode is on, YouTube’s documented behavior is that you cannot view comments on videos you watch.
The channel owner turned comments off
Creators can disable comments for their own videos. A viewer cannot restore a comments section that the owner has switched off, and Restricted Mode is not involved in that decision. Check another video from the same channel to see whether the pattern is channel-wide or limited to one trailer.
An administrator or network policy is enforcing the mode
Schools, libraries, family-management systems, mobile providers and network administrators can impose content restrictions. A policy may prevent you from changing Restricted Mode locally or may turn it back on after you switch it off. YouTube directs users with this problem to its content-restrictions troubleshooting information so they can identify whether the control comes from an administrator or the network.

Restricted Mode works at browser or device level. Turning it off in one desktop browser does not necessarily turn it off in another browser, an incognito profile, the Android app or an Android TV account. Likewise, turning it on in the app does not configure your television automatically.

Viewer filtering versus creator comment moderation
YouTube has detailed comment controls, but they are tools for channel owners and moderators. They do not give a viewer control over comments on somebody else’s game-trailer video.

Blocked-word and blocked-link comments can remain in a creator’s review queue for up to 60 days according to YouTube Help. That retention period concerns creator moderation; it does not mean Restricted Mode stores or reviews comments for the viewer.
Can you block toxic words on someone else’s trailer?
No. YouTube does not offer an ordinary viewer a personal word or phrase list that works on another channel’s comments. The blocked-words field belongs to the channel’s moderation settings, and YouTube states that it operates at channel level rather than as a one-video viewer preference.

- Hide every comment while continuing to watch: enable Restricted Mode.
- Keep comments but remove only selected insults: YouTube has no native viewer control for this on another channel.
- Moderate comments on your own trailer: use Basic or Strict moderation, a blocked-word list, blocked links, hidden users or Comments Off.
- Stop seeing a particular channel’s discussions: avoid opening its comment section; there is no viewer-side channel moderation equivalent to a creator’s hidden-user list.
If you publish a game trailer, use creator tools instead
Channel owners can choose a narrower moderation policy than Restricted Mode. Open YouTube Studio’s comment settings for the channel, then select the moderation behavior appropriate to the conversation you want to allow. The exact labels can vary slightly between Studio layouts, but the available categories are Basic, Strict, Hold all, blocked words, blocked links, hidden users and Comments Off.
Use Basic or Strict moderation for automatic screening
These modes hold comments YouTube considers potentially inappropriate before they are publicly visible. Strict moderation catches more comments, but it also increases the number of legitimate comments that require review. Choose it when reducing exposure is more important than immediate publication.
Use a blocked-word list for recurring terms
Add words or phrases that repeatedly appear in abuse, spoilers or harassment around your releases. The list is channel-level, so it can protect multiple uploads without being recreated for each trailer. It is not a perfect language filter: variations, misspellings and context can allow unwanted comments through, while benign uses can be held.
Hold links when spam is the problem
Blocked-link handling places comments containing links into review rather than allowing them to appear immediately. This is useful for promotional spam and scam attempts, but it does not replace a blocked-word policy for insults.

Hide repeat offenders or disable comments
Hidden users’ comments are suppressed across the channel. If a trailer is attracting an unmanageable pile-on, turning comments off removes the discussion entirely. These actions affect the owner’s content; they cannot be used by a viewer to change another channel’s video.
A decision guide for watching a controversial trailer
- You want zero comment exposure: turn on Restricted Mode before opening the trailer.
- You still need to find the trailer but not its discussion: use Restricted Mode, then search by the game title and trailer name. Remember that the broad filter can also affect which results are available.
- You want a normal YouTube catalog and only dislike certain words: there is no built-in viewer word list. Leave Restricted Mode off and do not open the comments, or use a separate viewing context with Restricted Mode enabled.
- Comments are absent even though you did not enable Restricted Mode: check whether the creator disabled them, then check for a school, family or network policy.
- You manage the channel: configure creator moderation rather than relying on viewers to enable Restricted Mode.
How to check and fix the setting when it does not behave as expected
Comments remain visible after you turned Restricted Mode on
- Confirm the switch is still on in the same browser, app or TV profile where the trailer is playing.
- Reload the video page or close and reopen the YouTube app.
- Check that you did not enable the setting in one browser while watching in another.
- Sign out and back in only if the setting appears to be associated with the wrong account or profile.
You cannot turn Restricted Mode off
- Look for a notice that the setting is locked or managed.
- Test a different connection only when you are authorized to do so; a school, library, family-management service, mobile provider or network administrator may be enforcing the policy.
- Use YouTube’s content-restrictions troubleshooting guidance to identify the administrator or network control rather than repeatedly changing the local switch.
A trailer disappears after you enable the mode
That can be expected. Restricted Mode considers more than comments and may limit videos using signals about metadata, language, reviews and age restrictions. Turn the mode off only if you accept seeing the broader YouTube experience again; there is no setting that keeps every filtered video while hiding only its comments.
Keeping the setting predictable across devices
Make a short device checklist if you watch trailers in several places:

Set Restricted Mode independently in each context. A network-enforced policy can override all of them, while a creator’s Comments Off setting affects everyone who opens that particular video regardless of their personal mode.
Bottom line
For a viewer who wants game-trailer comments out of sight, YouTube Restricted Mode is the native solution: enable it from the profile menu on desktop, from Settings → General on Android, or in YouTube’s Android TV settings. It hides comments but is intentionally broad, so it can also restrict mature videos and cannot be tuned to a custom list of toxic words. Creator moderation tools are more precise, but only the channel owner or an authorized moderator can use them.
