Turn off Autoplay Next Episode for each Netflix profile you want to change. On a phone or tablet, open Netflix, go to My Netflix, open the profile name, choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, and switch off Autoplay Next Episode. In a browser, open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile, open Playback settings, and clear the same option.
For less tempting browsing, also disable Autoplay Previews. Netflix does not provide a user-set daily or weekly viewing timer in the documented account controls, so a hard schedule requires your phone, computer, television, or streaming device’s screen-time or parental-control tools.
What Netflix’s autoplay controls do
Netflix has two separate autoplay behaviors. Autoplay Next Episode starts the following episode when the current one ends. Turning it off interrupts the automatic chain, but it does not stop you from selecting another episode yourself. Autoplay Previews starts trailers or clips while you browse. Disabling it removes that automatic browsing stimulation on devices that support the feature.

Turn off “Autoplay Next Episode” on Android, iPhone, or iPad
The setting belongs to a profile, not to the entire Netflix account. Repeat these steps for every profile that needs the interruption.

- Open the Netflix app on your Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top of the screen.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile again.
- Switch off Autoplay Next Episode.
- On an iPhone or iPad, tap Done when it appears.
Netflix says the preference updates automatically. If a television or another device still starts the next episode, switch to another profile and back, or sign out of Netflix and sign in again on that device.
Turn off “Autoplay Next Episode” in a web browser
- Open Netflix and go to the Account page.
- Under Profiles, select the profile you want to change.
- Open Playback settings.
- Clear Autoplay Next Episode.
- Save or confirm if Netflix presents a confirmation control.
The choice applies to that profile across supported devices after they refresh their account information. If behavior does not change immediately, switch profiles or sign out and back in.
Turn off autoplay previews
In the mobile app
Use the same profile-management route: open Netflix, choose the profile, tap My Netflix, tap the profile name, choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, and switch off Autoplay Previews. This affects previews that would otherwise begin while you browse.

In a browser
Open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile, open Playback settings, and switch off Autoplay Previews.
Devices where previews may not be available
Netflix notes that iPads and some older televisions and TV streaming devices do not support preview autoplay. On those devices, there may be no preview switch to change, or changing it may have no visible effect. The next-episode setting is separate, so check that control as well if episodes continue automatically.
Why a device may still autoplay after you change the setting
- You changed the wrong profile. Autoplay preferences are profile-specific. Edit the profile actually used for viewing.
- The device has stale account data. Switch to another profile and back, or sign out and sign in again.
- You are seeing a manual choice, not autoplay. Turning off the setting does not stop someone from pressing play on the next episode.
- The behavior is a preview. Disable Autoplay Previews separately from Autoplay Next Episode.
- The device does not support the feature. Preview autoplay is not available on iPads and some older TVs and TV streaming devices.
What Netflix’s “Are you still watching?” prompt actually limits
Netflix uses an inactivity check rather than a scheduled viewing quota. On TVs and TV streaming devices, Netflix says the prompt appears after three episodes and 90 minutes of uninterrupted watching. On other devices, it appears after three episodes in a row without using video-player controls.

The prompt asks whether you are still watching so playback does not continue when nobody is using the screen. You can dismiss it and continue, or turn off next-episode autoplay to make continuation require a deliberate selection. Because the threshold is automatic and not user-configurable, it should not be treated as a personal daily limit.
Build a stronger limit for children or shared households
Use a Kids profile
A Kids profile presents a child-oriented catalog and gives the household a separate place to apply restrictions. Select the child’s profile when changing playback and content settings so adult profiles are not altered accidentally.
Set a maturity rating
Netflix’s maturity control makes a profile show only titles at or below the rating you select. This is a content boundary, not a time counter: it controls what can be watched rather than how long someone can watch.

Block specific titles
Use blocked-title controls when a rating category is too broad. Blocked titles are removed from that profile, reducing the chance that a particular series or film becomes the default choice.
Add a profile lock
A profile lock or PIN helps prevent a child from leaving a restricted profile and opening an unrestricted one. Keep the PIN with the supervising adult and check that the unrestricted profiles themselves are also protected where appropriate.

Netflix’s documented account controls do not include a configurable daily or weekly viewing-duration timer. If the goal is “no more than a set number of minutes,” enforce that rule at the operating-system or device level instead.

- Phones and tablets: use the operating system’s screen-time, app-limit, downtime, or family-management feature to set a Netflix limit.
- Computers: use the operating system’s family controls or a managed account to restrict the Netflix app or streaming website during specified hours.
- Smart TVs and streaming devices: check the device maker’s parental-control or app-lock settings. Availability and labels vary by model and software version.
- Household schedule: combine a device-level cutoff with a Netflix profile PIN so the viewer cannot simply switch profiles to bypass the boundary.
Device controls are separate from Netflix. A Netflix setting can stop an automatic transition, while a device-level limit can block access after a schedule or allowance is reached. Configure both when you need interruption and enforcement.

- Choose the profiles. List every profile used by the person or household you want to limit.
- Disable next-episode autoplay. Apply the mobile or browser steps to each selected profile.
- Disable previews. Turn off Autoplay Previews for the same profiles on supported devices.
- Apply content boundaries. For children, use a Kids profile, set an appropriate maturity rating, and block titles that should not appear.
- Protect profile switching. Add a profile lock/PIN so a restricted viewer cannot move to an unrestricted profile.
- Set the actual time boundary. Configure the phone, computer, television, or streaming device’s screen-time or parental-control feature if a fixed daily schedule is required.
- Refresh every screen. Switch profiles or sign out and in on devices that still show the old autoplay behavior.
- Explain the boundary. Tell household members which control interrupts playback, which control restricts content, and which device rule enforces the clock. This prevents a content restriction from being mistaken for a time limit.

Common questions about limiting Netflix
Will turning off autoplay cancel my Netflix subscription or remove episodes?
No. It changes whether the next episode starts automatically for the selected profile. The catalog and account subscription are unaffected.
Do I need to change the setting on every television?
No. The preference is attached to the Netflix profile. A device may need a profile switch or sign-in refresh before it reflects the change.

Not through the documented Netflix account controls. The “Are you still watching?” prompt uses Netflix’s automatic episode-and-inactivity thresholds. For an exact daily allowance, use screen-time controls on the device or operating system.
Does disabling previews stop recommendations?
No. It stops trailers or clips from starting automatically while browsing where the feature is supported; it does not remove the recommendation rows or catalog titles.
Why can someone still watch more after the “Are you still watching?” message?
The message is an inactivity check. Dismissing it allows viewing to continue. To require a deliberate choice between episodes, disable Autoplay Next Episode; to enforce a clock-based limit, add a device-level screen-time rule.
