To turn off ordinary mute on most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Sound and vibration and select Sound. If the phone is still silent, check the separate Mute all sounds accessibility setting, Do not disturb, and the volume slider for the sound you want to hear. Samsung notes that menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version.
Turn off ordinary Mute mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sound and vibration.
- Select Sound.
Samsung defines Sound as enabling sound and vibration for calls and notifications. Vibrate keeps vibration but removes audible alerts; Mute disables both sound and vibration for calls and notifications. If the phone is already set to Sound, the problem may be a different setting rather than Mute mode.
If the phone is still silent, check these separate controls
Mute all sounds
Open Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements and turn off Mute all sounds. This is broader than ordinary Mute mode: Samsung says it can silence media, notifications, system sounds, and the other person’s voice during calls. Volume cannot be adjusted while this feature is enabled. Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting guide describes this setting and its effects.
Do not disturb
Go to Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb. Turn it off to restore ordinary calls and notifications, or adjust its exceptions if you want quiet periods but still need selected calls to ring. Samsung documents options for allowing calls from all callers, contacts, favorites, or no one, as well as an option for a repeat caller within 15 minutes. See Samsung’s Do not disturb instructions.

Individual volume sliders
Open Settings > Sound and vibration > Volume and raise the slider for the sound that is missing or too quiet. Ringtone, notification, media, and system sounds are separate categories. A volume-key press does not necessarily change ringtone volume: what it adjusts can depend on what is playing and the phone’s settings. If the ringtone slider will not rise, Samsung recommends closing apps and stopping media before trying again.
If incoming calls do not ring
First check that the phone is in Sound mode and that ringtone volume is audible. Then check the selected ringtone, Do not disturb, Airplane mode, and Settings > Modes and Routines for a mode such as Sleep or Relax that may be suppressing alerts. Samsung’s Galaxy ringtone troubleshooting guidance also identifies blocked callers, call forwarding, and sound settings in third-party calling or video-calling apps as possible causes.

Some contacts can have different ringtone behavior. Samsung documents an option that lets a contact ring even when the phone is in Vibrate or Mute. Message tones are configured separately under Settings > Sound and vibration > Notification sound; changing the ringtone does not necessarily restore message alerts. If you cannot hear the other person on a call
A silent incoming ringtone and missing audio during a call are different problems. While a call is active, press Volume up to raise in-call volume; Samsung says this volume can only be adjusted during a call. If the other person’s voice remains inaudible, check that Mute all sounds is off and follow Samsung’s guidance for receiver, speaker, and connection troubleshooting: Galaxy call-audio troubleshooting.

Restart the phone before considering more drastic steps
After checking the settings that match the symptom, restart the Galaxy phone. Samsung recommends a restart because a temporary system error can affect audio. If sound is still missing, continue with device-specific troubleshooting or contact Samsung support; the symptom alone does not prove the speaker is defective. Samsung lists factory reset as a later option if other ringtone troubleshooting fails, and advises backing up personal data first.

Samsung’s settings paths and labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If a path does not match your phone, search Settings for the feature name, such as “Mute all sounds” or “Do not disturb.”
