To silence music from just one app in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer, find the app under Apps, then mute it or set its volume to zero. To end playback rather than silence it, use Pause or Stop in the player. To silence all Windows audio, lower or mute the system volume.
Choose whether to stop playback or silence its sound
| Option | What it affects | Does playback continue? | Do other Windows sounds remain audible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause or Stop in the player | The selected playback | No | Yes |
| Mute the app in Volume mixer | That app’s audio | Usually yes; the app is silenced, not stopped | Yes |
| Mute system volume | Windows audio output | Yes, unless you also pause or stop the player | No |
If you want the music to stop playing, use the player’s Pause or Stop control. If you only need it to be inaudible while keeping other sounds, mute the app. Player controls differ, so use the control in the app that is currently playing the music.
Mute music from one app in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the music player or browser producing the sound.
- Use that app’s mute control or move its volume slider to zero.
This affects that app while leaving other app audio and system sounds available. Microsoft cautions that “App volume controls can override system volume,” so check the specific app’s setting if its music is still audible or its volume behaves differently from the system level. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide explains per-app volume and output-device controls.
Stop music that starts in the background
First identify which app or Windows feature is playing it. Check open music apps and browser tabs, then pause or stop playback in the source if you want it to end. If music begins when you start a Focus session, check the session: Windows Clock can play Spotify audio when a Spotify account is linked and a playlist or podcast is selected. Stop the session or review its audio configuration. Microsoft describes this integration in Focus: Stay on task with fewer distractions in Windows.

Mute all Windows audio
Use the volume control in the taskbar to lower the system volume or mute it. This is broader than muting one app: it silences Windows output rather than preserving other app sounds. If music itself should stop, pause or stop it in the player as well.
Where to find Volume mixer in Windows 10
In Windows 10, right-click the taskbar’s Volume icon and choose Open Volume mixer. Check the music app’s slider and mute state. Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; if you have upgraded, use the Windows 11 Settings path above. See Microsoft’s low or quiet sound guide for the Windows 10 status and audio steps.
