To disable Multi-Link Operation (MLO), open your router’s own app or administration page and switch off its MLO setting. The menu is not standardized: ASUS uses Wireless > MLO > Enable MLO, eero uses Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation, and the TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro guide places Enable MLO network under Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Use the instructions for your exact model and firmware, then allow any documented reboot to finish.

What turning off MLO changes

Multi-Link Operation is a Wi‑Fi 7 feature that lets a compatible client and access point coordinate more than one wireless band or link. A Wi‑Fi 7 network can therefore use MLO-capable connections instead of treating each band as an entirely separate choice. Disabling MLO removes that operating mode from the network profile; it does not turn off Wi‑Fi, erase the router configuration, or downgrade every radio to an older Wi‑Fi standard.

The exact result depends on the router. Some systems expose one global MLO switch, while others separately expose an MLO network profile and a Wi‑Fi 7 mode control. A phone, laptop, or smart-home device that cannot use MLO can still connect through the router’s ordinary wireless compatibility modes after the change. Conversely, an MLO-capable client will no longer be able to negotiate MLO on that network.

Official documentation does not establish a universal speed or range improvement from turning MLO off. Disable it when you are troubleshooting association problems, dealing with a legacy client, simplifying a mesh configuration, or following a compatibility requirement—not because a faster connection is guaranteed. If performance is the reason, measure the same client, location, band and test method before and after the change.

Before you disable MLO

Make the change when you can tolerate a temporary loss of connectivity. A router or mesh system may briefly stop broadcasting while it applies a wireless setting, and a reboot can leave every wireless client disconnected until startup completes. Do not begin during a meeting, a firmware update, or another activity that depends on a continuous connection.

  • Identify the platform: note the manufacturer, exact model, hardware revision where applicable, and current firmware or app version.
  • Use the right interface: some routers provide the setting only in a web administration page; eero exposes it in its mobile app.
  • Record the current state: take a screenshot or write down the existing MLO, Wi‑Fi 7, security and mesh settings so you can restore them.
  • Plan for a connection interruption: a setting change can disconnect wireless clients. Keep an Ethernet-connected computer or the router app available if possible.
  • Check the model documentation: a menu shown for one Wi‑Fi 7 model may not exist on another model from the same manufacturer.

There is no accessory required for this procedure. The documented methods use the router’s existing web interface or app. A new router, cable, networking tool, or printed manual will not itself disable MLO; the useful manual is the current one for the exact hardware and firmware.

Documented paths at a glance

Platform Interface Menu path Disable control Reboot information Important limitation
ASUS routers with the documented MLO interface Web administration page Wireless > MLO Turn off Enable MLO, then apply The cited ASUS instructions do not specify a disable-time reboot Available controls and firmware support vary by model; AiMesh behavior matters
eero systems with MLO support eero mobile app Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation Toggle Multi-link operation off eero documents about two minutes for a reboot when MLO is enabled, but does not specifically confirm a disable-time reboot Supported hardware, firmware and app versions are required; unavailable on eero Business networks

The table is a comparison of documented interfaces, not a universal map for every Wi‑Fi 7 product. Even within one brand, firmware can move a control, rename it, or expose it only on particular hardware. If your screen differs, stop at the closest official model guide instead of guessing which switch has the same effect.

ASUS: disable MLO in the web interface

Use the global MLO switch

  1. Connect to the ASUS router, preferably from a device on its local network. Open the router’s administration page using the LAN address or the ASUS router URL you normally use.
  2. Sign in with the router administrator account.
  3. Open Wireless, then select MLO.
  4. Turn off Enable MLO. ASUS describes this control as enabled by default in the documented interface.
  5. Apply or save the change. Keep the administration page open until it confirms the new setting, and reconnect a client if the wireless network briefly disappears.

Do not substitute a generic Wi‑Fi 7 setting for the MLO switch. The ASUS control that disables MLO is specifically under Wireless > MLO. If the page offers several profiles, read the profile name before saving so you do not alter a guest or secondary network unintentionally.

Distinguish MLO from related ASUS controls

ASUS also documents an MLO control inside the main network profile at Network > Main network profile > Advanced Settings > Multi-Link Operation (MLO). In the same general area, it documents a separate WiFi 7 mode control under Network > main network profile. These labels describe related but distinct functions. Turning off Wi‑Fi 7 mode is not automatically the same operation as disabling the MLO network profile, so use the control that matches your goal.

If your objective is specifically to stop multi-link negotiation, use the documented MLO control rather than changing every modern wireless feature. If your objective is to make a particular profile behave differently, confirm whether that profile has its own MLO option. The two interfaces can present related settings without being interchangeable.

Check AiMesh consequences

ASUS documents a specific AiMesh interaction: when MLO is enabled on the primary router, a non‑MLO Wi‑Fi 6E node will not broadcast a 6 GHz network. If your mesh includes such a node and you need its 6 GHz radio visible, use Wireless > MLO to disable MLO on the primary router. The exact behavior still depends on the model and firmware combination, so check the support information for every node before changing the setting.

After applying the change, verify the primary router first and then walk through each node. Check whether the expected 6 GHz network appears and whether clients can roam as they did before. If only one node behaves differently, record that model and firmware rather than assuming the whole mesh has the same capability.

eero: turn off MLO in the app

App procedure

  1. Open the eero app while your phone is connected to or managing the relevant eero network.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Advanced networking.
  4. Tap Wireless.
  5. Open Multi-link operation and toggle it off.
  6. Accept any confirmation shown by the app, then wait until the network status returns to normal before testing clients.

The eero support instructions explicitly state that enabling MLO reboots the network and that this reboot can take about two minutes. They do not explicitly state whether disabling MLO causes the same interruption on every model. Treat the app’s confirmation and status screen as authoritative for your system; do not assume that the enable-time duration applies to disabling.

Because eero is app-managed, the setting may not be available from a browser page. Make the change while the app can reach the network, and do not close the app if it displays a progress or reconnection message. Once the status is normal, reopen the same path to confirm that the toggle stayed off.

When the eero option is missing

MLO is limited to supported eero hardware and requires the firmware and app versions specified by eero. It is also unavailable on eero Business networks. If Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless has no Multi-link operation entry, verify the network type, update the app, allow the eeros to complete firmware updates, and confirm that every participating unit is supported. A missing menu is not evidence that MLO is permanently on; it usually means the feature is not exposed for that configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check all units in a multi-eero installation, not only the gateway. A mixed or unsupported system can change which options the app presents. If the menu remains absent after the app and firmware meet the stated requirements, use eero’s current model-specific support instructions rather than trying to infer a hidden setting.

Account for client compatibility

eero warns that WPA3 may be enabled on participating bands and that some legacy devices may be incompatible with MLO networks. If you are disabling MLO because an older device cannot join, note which device fails and whether it uses an older security capability. After the change, reconnect that device and check its address, internet access and local-network access separately.

Do not treat one successful phone connection as proof that every client is fixed. Test the older device, a current Wi‑Fi 7 client if available, and any device that uses local discovery. If the legacy device works after MLO is off, keep the previous security and network notes so you can restore the original configuration if another client is affected.

TP-Link Archer: clear the MLO network checkbox

Archer BE550 Pro procedure

  1. Connect to the Archer router and open its web administration interface.
  2. Sign in with the administrator credentials.
  3. Go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings.
  4. Find Enable MLO network and clear the checkbox.
  5. Save the setting.
  6. Wait for the router to reboot completely. The Archer user guide says a reboot is required for MLO setting changes to take effect.
  7. Reconnect wireless clients only after the router’s status lights or administration page indicate that startup is complete.

This path comes from the Archer BE550 Pro user guide. Other Archer models can use different labels or locations, so do not treat this menu as a universal TP-Link path. Open the guide for your exact model and hardware revision if the checkbox is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reboot is part of the setting change, not a sign that the router has been reset. Keep the administration page open if possible, wait for the normal startup indication, and then verify the checkbox rather than repeatedly clicking Save while the router is restarting.

If you cannot find an MLO setting

Confirm that MLO is actually supported

Wi‑Fi 7 branding alone does not guarantee that every firmware release exposes the same controls. Check the router model, hardware revision, firmware version and management method. Mesh systems can require all nodes to meet a support requirement, and cloud-managed systems can hide controls that are unavailable for a particular network type.

Compare the exact model number printed on the unit or in the app with the model named in the manual. A similarly named product can have a different interface or feature set. If the manufacturer lists firmware prerequisites, complete those updates through the normal supported process before diagnosing a missing switch.

Check for a different label

Look for terms such as Multi-Link Operation, MLO network or Multi-link operation. Do not confuse these with a band toggle, a 6 GHz radio switch, a Wi‑Fi 7 mode switch, band steering or a guest-network setting. Those controls can change wireless behavior without disabling MLO itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update before troubleshooting the menu

Use the manufacturer’s normal firmware or app update process, then sign out and back in to the administration interface. If a control is still absent, consult the current manual or support page for the exact model rather than applying instructions from a visually similar router.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using another brand’s path: an ASUS web menu cannot be assumed to exist on eero or TP-Link.
  • Disabling Wi‑Fi 7 instead of MLO: related labels can control different functions, particularly on ASUS.
  • Ignoring a required restart: TP-Link documents a reboot for MLO changes, while eero’s stated two-minute reboot refers to enabling MLO.
  • Changing a guest or secondary profile: confirm the network profile named on screen before applying a setting.
  • Testing during convergence: wait for the router or mesh status to return to normal before judging whether a client is compatible.
  • Assuming a speed gain: no general performance improvement from disabling MLO is established; measure your own connection if performance is the concern.

What to test after MLO is off

Verify the setting

  • Reopen the same MLO page or app screen and confirm that the control remains off after saving or rebooting.
  • On a client that previously had trouble, forget and rejoin the network only if a normal reconnect does not work.
  • Check that the client receives an IP address, reaches the router’s local address and reaches the internet.
  • Test both a modern client and the device that motivated the change; one successful connection does not prove that every band or node is operating as expected.

For a mesh, perform the checks near the primary router and then near each satellite. This separates a client problem from a node-specific or roaming problem. Record which node served the client and whether the behavior changes as you move, so a later support request includes useful model-specific information.

Measure performance without overstating the result

If you changed MLO to investigate speed, latency or stability, use the same test server, client position, time window and wired or wireless conditions before and after. Record download speed, upload speed, latency and disconnects separately. A result on one device or at one moment is a local observation, not proof that disabling MLO improves Wi‑Fi 7 generally.

Also note whether the client used the same security mode and network profile during both checks. A changed band, different access point, or reconnect at a different location can explain a result independently of MLO. Keep the comparison simple enough to repeat after re-enabling the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recover if a client remains offline

  1. Wait for any router reboot or network convergence to finish.
  2. Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on at the affected client, then reconnect.
  3. Check whether the client is trying to use a saved network profile with obsolete security settings.
  4. For a mesh, test near the primary router and then near each node to identify whether the problem is local to one access point.
  5. Restore the previous MLO state if disabling it did not address the problem, then use the router’s current model-specific support instructions for further diagnosis.

Restore only the setting you recorded, and confirm the router or app accepts it. If the problem persists with both states, MLO may not be the cause; continue with the exact model’s support procedure instead of repeatedly changing unrelated wireless options.

Should MLO stay disabled?

Leave it off when it resolves a specific compatibility or stability issue and your required devices work normally. It may also simplify a mesh deployment where a documented interaction, such as the ASUS non‑MLO Wi‑Fi 6E node behavior, matters to you. Keep it enabled when your clients and mesh are supported, the network is stable and you want to retain MLO capability. The available documentation explains how to operate the feature and its compatibility conditions; it does not establish one best setting for every household.

Review the decision after firmware or app updates, because support and menu availability can change by model and version. If you add a new Wi‑Fi 7 client or mesh node, test it with the current setting rather than assuming the old result still applies.

How to turn MLO back on

Reverse the same model-specific operation: enable Enable MLO under ASUS Wireless > MLO; switch on Multi-link operation in the eero app at Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless; or select Enable MLO network in the TP-Link Archer wireless settings. Apply or save the change and follow the router or app’s restart instructions. For eero, the documented enable process reboots the network and may take about two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I disable MLO?

Use the exact router’s app or web interface. ASUS: Wireless > MLO, turn off Enable MLO. eero: Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation, toggle it off. TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro: Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, clear Enable MLO network.

Will turning off MLO make Wi‑Fi faster?

Not necessarily. The documented instructions do not establish a universal speed, range or latency benefit. If performance is the reason for the change, compare the same client, location, test method and network conditions before and after.

Does disabling MLO turn off Wi‑Fi 7?

No universal conclusion follows from the switch. MLO is an operating mode, and ASUS separately documents a WiFi 7 mode control. Do not assume that disabling one is identical to disabling the other; use the control that matches your goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the router reboot when I turn MLO off?

TP-Link’s Archer guide says the router reboots for MLO setting changes. eero documents about two minutes for a reboot when MLO is enabled but does not explicitly confirm the same behavior for disabling. ASUS’s documented disable steps do not specify a reboot, so follow the prompt and status screen for your model.

Why is the MLO option missing on eero?

The feature requires supported eero hardware, the specified firmware and app versions, and an eligible network type. eero says MLO is unavailable on Business networks. Check every participating unit and update the app and firmware before consulting the current support page.

Can older devices still connect after MLO is disabled?

They may, using the router’s ordinary compatibility modes, but results depend on the device and security settings. eero warns that WPA3 may be enabled on participating bands and that some legacy devices can be incompatible with MLO networks. Test the affected device directly after the change.

What happens to ASUS AiMesh 6 GHz service?

ASUS documents that when MLO is enabled on the primary router, a non‑MLO Wi‑Fi 6E node will not broadcast a 6 GHz network. If that 6 GHz radio is needed, ASUS identifies Wireless > MLO as the disable path. Verify behavior against the exact node and firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy equipment to disable MLO?

No. The documented procedures use the router’s existing administration page or mobile app. A replacement router or networking accessory is not required for this settings change.

Key takeaway

There is no universal Wi‑Fi 7 MLO menu. Match the instructions to the exact router: ASUS uses a web-interface switch under Wireless > MLO, eero uses an in-app toggle under Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless, and the documented TP-Link Archer path uses Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Verify the model and firmware, note mesh and network-type limitations, and treat any performance change as something to measure on your own connection rather than a guaranteed benefit.
