There is no single Minecraft switch that universally disables Marketplace spending on every edition and device. Use the control that matches the purchase route: turn off passwordless purchases in Microsoft Store on Windows, require a passkey for purchases on Xbox, or make a child account request adult approval through Xbox family settings or Microsoft Family Safety. These controls protect the Microsoft Store/Xbox purchase paths they cover; verify the checkout flow on the device where Minecoins or Marketplace content are being bought.
Choose the control that matches your device and account
Start with the platform where the purchase is made and the type of Microsoft account being used. The same Minecraft account can be used on more than one device, but purchase-security settings are not automatically one universal switch.

Microsoft’s own wording is narrower than “block all Minecraft purchases”: “You can set Microsoft Store to require a password when you make purchases.” See Microsoft’s purchase-prevention instructions for the current Windows and Xbox paths.
Before changing a purchase setting
A short account audit prevents most failed attempts. Write down which device starts the checkout, which Microsoft account is signed in, and whether that account is an adult or a child account. Also note whether the purchase is for Minecoins, a Marketplace world, a skin pack, or another in-app item; Microsoft describes the Windows control as covering only certain in-app purchases.

- On a shared PC, open Microsoft Store and check the profile shown before editing settings.
- On Xbox, verify the gamertag and Microsoft account that will be charged, not merely the profile currently holding the controller.
- For a child, confirm the account appears in the organizer’s family list. A second gamertag, guest profile, or similarly named account can be a different account entirely.
- Have the organizer’s sign-in credentials available. Microsoft may require the account password when changing Xbox security preferences.
- List every Windows PC and Xbox console the player can use. Device-specific settings must be checked on each relevant device.
This inventory also tells you which instructions to follow first. An adult on a shared Xbox needs a passkey requirement; a child needs an approval workflow; and a Windows Store purchase needs the Store’s Purchase sign-in setting.
Windows: require sign-in for Microsoft Store purchases
On Windows, the relevant setting is in the Microsoft Store app, not in a general Minecraft world or server setting. Turning off Purchase sign-in removes the passwordless purchase option for the transactions Microsoft covers.

- Open Microsoft Store on the Windows PC.
- Select your Profile icon.
- Choose App settings.
- Find Purchase sign-in.
- Turn the switch off.
With the switch off, Microsoft Store should require account sign-in when a covered purchase is attempted. The setting is device-specific. If a child or another household member uses two Windows PCs, repeat the path on both; changing it on one PC does not configure the other.
What this Windows setting covers
Microsoft describes Purchase sign-in as applying to “certain in-app purchases.” That qualification matters for Minecraft Marketplace transactions: do not assume that every edition, launcher, account combination, or checkout screen is governed by this toggle. The control is strongest when the purchase is presented by Microsoft Store under the same Microsoft account.
Confirm the setting on a shared PC
- Check that the Store is signed in to the Microsoft account that actually pays for the purchase.
- Confirm that Purchase sign-in remains off after the Store app is reopened.
- Use the purchase flow only far enough to see whether a credential prompt appears; cancel before confirming a charge.
- Repeat the check after Windows updates if the Store interface or account has changed.
If the Marketplace checkout opens a different payment window or website, treat that as a different billing path and use the verification method in the section below rather than assuming the Store switch controls it.
Xbox: make a passkey mandatory for purchases
Xbox has a separate purchase-security control. For an adult account, set the console to ask for a passkey every time a purchase is made.

- Press the Xbox button.
- Open System → Settings.
- Select Account.
- Open Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose Change my sign-in & security preferences.
- Select Customize.
- Find Ask for my passkey to make purchases.
- Set it to Passkey required.
The console may ask the account holder for the account password before it allows changes to security settings. Use the labels currently displayed on the console if they differ slightly from this path; Microsoft periodically revises Xbox menus.
Understand what an Xbox passkey protects
The passkey prompt gates the purchase action. It does not delete Minecoins, remove saved payment details, or disable Marketplace itself. Someone who knows the account’s required credential could still complete the purchase, so do not share the passkey or leave the account signed in on an unattended console.

For a household with several Xbox consoles, check each console and each account that can initiate the purchase. A passkey setting for one adult account does not automatically impose the same requirement on a different Microsoft account.
Child accounts: require an adult approval
If the buyer is a child or teen, approval controls are usually more appropriate than simply asking the child to enter a password. The family organizer receives a request and decides whether to allow the purchase.

Enable Ask a parent on Xbox
Microsoft’s Xbox instructions require the family organizer to use the organizer account:
- Sign in as the family organizer.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings.
- Choose Account → Family settings.
- Select Manage family members, then choose the child.
- Open Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox Live privacy → View details & customize.
- Open Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
Microsoft notes that child or teen defaults can already enable this control. Check the setting rather than relying on the account’s age category. The child must be selected in the family membership list; changing the organizer’s own permissions will not change the child’s purchase behavior.
Use Family Safety approval for every purchase
Microsoft Family Safety provides a second approval route for a child account:
- Open the child’s Spending page in Microsoft Family Safety.
- Choose Manage spending.
- Enable Require approval for every purchase.
Family Safety also presents purchase requests, a notification feed, and spending activity. This gives the organizer a way to review what was requested and whether it was approved. The Xbox family setting and Family Safety setting are related but appear in different places, so use the one that matches how your family manages accounts and monitor both if the child plays on Xbox and Windows.

These controls solve different problems. Windows Purchase sign-in requires the paying account to authenticate for covered Store transactions. Xbox Passkey required adds a credential prompt for an adult account on the console. Ask a parent and Family Safety approval put the decision with the organizer instead of giving the child the adult credential.

Do not substitute an adult password for a child approval workflow. Giving a child the credential defeats the purpose of the gate and makes it difficult to tell who authorized a charge.

Check which billing path Minecraft is using
Password and approval controls are tied to the store or billing platform processing the transaction. Microsoft explains that an app using a non-Microsoft billing platform can have different purchase-security and payment-support rules; in those cases, the billing platform determines the controls. Read the explanation of in-app purchases with non-Microsoft billing platforms when the checkout does not look like Microsoft Store or Xbox checkout.
The available documentation does not establish that every Minecraft Marketplace transaction uses an alternative billing platform. Therefore, verify the actual screen instead of assuming that Marketplace always follows one rule.
Indicators that Microsoft is handling the purchase
- The purchase appears inside Microsoft Store or the Xbox purchase interface.
- The account and payment confirmation identify Microsoft as the seller or billing provider.
- The Windows Store or Xbox security setting produces a credential or approval prompt before confirmation.
Indicators that a different route may be involved
- The checkout opens outside Microsoft Store or the Xbox purchase overlay.
- The payment page names another billing provider.
- The Windows Purchase sign-in or Xbox passkey setting has no effect during a controlled, cancelled test.
If the second group applies, do not describe the Microsoft setting as a universal Marketplace block. Identify the account and billing provider shown on the checkout page and use that provider’s current purchase-security controls.
Use the right protection for each household scenario

Common problems and precise fixes
The Store still completes a purchase without asking
First check that the switch is actually off and that you changed the setting on the same Windows device being used for Minecraft. Then confirm the Store is signed in to the paying account. If the Marketplace flow opens a separate checkout, the transaction may not be one of the “certain in-app purchases” covered by Purchase sign-in; follow the billing-path check rather than repeatedly changing the Store toggle.
Xbox does not show the exact menu wording
Open the account’s security and passkey area from Settings and look for the purchase option under the customizable sign-in preferences. Microsoft’s documented labels are Ask for my passkey to make purchases and Passkey required, but console updates can move or rename nearby items. Make sure you are editing the account that will be charged.
A child can still buy without an approval request
Verify that the child is a member of the correct Microsoft family, that the organizer—not the child account—made the change, and that Ask a parent is enabled under Buy & download. For purchases made on Windows or other Microsoft-connected devices, check Family Safety’s Require approval for every purchase setting as well. A transaction processed through a different billing platform may not enter either approval workflow.

The family organizer cannot find the child
Check that the organizer is signed in to the Microsoft account that manages the family and that the child’s account, rather than a second gamertag or guest profile, is selected. Guest profiles and a different signed-in account are not protected by settings applied to the child’s account.
The setting works on one device but not another
This is expected for Windows Purchase sign-in because Microsoft says it is configured per device. Configure each shared Windows PC individually. Xbox and Family Safety controls also depend on the account and platform where the purchase starts, so test every device the child can access.

A prompt appears, but it is the wrong account
Stop before confirming the transaction. Check the Store profile, Xbox gamertag, and account named in the payment dialog. A password prompt protects the account requesting that credential; it does not automatically protect another family member’s account. Sign in with the intended account or apply the setting to the account actually being charged.
You want to remove all spending ability
The documented settings add sign-in or approval gates; they do not establish a universal Marketplace-off switch, delete Minecoins, remove saved payment methods, or close an account. Do not promise that toggling Purchase sign-in or Passkey required will accomplish those separate actions. If you need a stronger restriction, consult the current account and store controls for the exact platform and billing route.

After changing a setting, perform a controlled check before handing the device back to a child:
- Open the Minecraft Marketplace purchase flow for a low-cost item, but do not confirm the final purchase.
- Confirm that Windows asks for sign-in, Xbox asks for the required passkey, or the child account displays an approval request.
- Cancel the transaction and check that no order confirmation or charge was created.
- Repeat the test on each Windows PC, Xbox console, or account that can access the Marketplace.
- If no prompt appears, record the checkout provider shown on screen and reassess whether Microsoft Store/Xbox controls apply.
This test distinguishes a working credential gate from a setting that is enabled somewhere else. It also avoids claiming that a password prompt covers a transaction route that Microsoft’s documentation does not identify.
Keep an approval workflow manageable
For a child account, approval is an ongoing process rather than a one-time password check. Review the Family Safety notification feed and spending activity so requests do not get missed. On Xbox, confirm that the organizer receives the child’s request after enabling Ask a parent. If the child switches between Xbox and Windows, test both paths and keep a simple list of which device has which control.

When an adult account is shared, keep the passkey or account password private and avoid leaving the paying account active on an unattended console or PC. A credential gate works only if other users cannot access the credential itself. Recheck the account and billing identity whenever a family member changes profiles.
What these settings do not establish
- They do not prove that every Minecraft edition or Marketplace transaction is governed by one universal switch.
- They do not automatically configure every Windows device in a household.
- They do not remove stored payment methods or close the Microsoft account.
- They do not guarantee that a non-Microsoft billing platform will honor Microsoft Store or Xbox purchase prompts.
- They do not replace account security: keep passwords and passkeys private and sign out of shared devices when appropriate.
