To turn off Gemini’s visible Chrome controls without losing access to Gemini elsewhere, open Chrome’s More menu, choose Settings, then go to AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, switch off the relevant Show Gemini options. If the toolbar button remains, right-click it and select Unpin Gemini.
These controls hide Gemini in Chrome or remove its pinned icon; they are not a universal Gemini shutdown. You can continue using the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com. Chrome also supports opening that service with the @gemini address-bar shortcut.
What “turn off Gemini in Chrome” actually changes
Chrome exposes several independent Gemini controls. Hiding the Gemini interface affects what appears in the browser, while account activity and tab-sharing controls govern different behavior. Choosing the right control prevents you from disabling more than intended.

Google’s documented Chrome controls hide or unpin the interface. They are not described as a master switch that disables Gemini throughout Chrome or across your account.

Hide Gemini from Chrome’s interface
The following path is documented for desktop Chrome. Labels can change as the feature rolls out, but the control is under the Gemini in Chrome section of Chrome settings.
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select More (the three-dot menu) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- In the settings sidebar, open AI innovations, then select Gemini in Chrome. If you do not immediately see the item, open the settings menu or sidebar first so the available categories are visible.
- Find the Preferences section.
- Turn off each Show Gemini option that you do not want. Depending on your installation, the choices can include showing Gemini at the top of the browser and showing Gemini in the Mac menu bar or Windows system tray.
Turn off only the locations you want hidden. For example, disabling the browser option removes the in-Chrome presentation while leaving a separate operating-system entry enabled if that option is offered and still switched on.
Remove a Gemini button that is still on the toolbar
If the Gemini button remains after changing the preferences, remove its pin directly from the toolbar:

- Right-click the icon.
- Select Unpin Gemini.
Unpinning changes the toolbar layout. It does not delete Gemini, change your Google Account activity setting, or prevent you from visiting the web app.

Keep using Gemini without the Chrome control
Hiding the Chrome interface does not stop access to Gemini on the web. Open gemini.google.com directly whenever you want to start a chat.
Chrome also documents a site shortcut:
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
@gemini. - Select the Gemini chat shortcut from the suggestions.
The @gemini shortcut is optional. If you want to keep this route, do not deactivate the Gemini site shortcut in Chrome’s settings. Removing the visible Gemini button and leaving the shortcut enabled gives you a low-profile way to open Gemini when you deliberately choose it.
Stop Chrome from sharing the current tab automatically
Some readers do not want to hide Gemini; they only want to prevent a new chat from receiving the page they are viewing. In Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, open the Permissions section and turn off Share current tab by default.

This changes the default sharing behavior. It does not remove the Gemini icon, unpin the toolbar button, or disable Gemini. You can still share a tab in a chat when you explicitly choose that action.

Do not change Gemini Apps Activity unless you mean to
Gemini Apps Activity is an account-level setting, separate from Chrome’s Gemini in Chrome preferences. Turning it off is not required to hide the browser interface, and hiding the interface does not itself change that activity setting.
Use the account activity control only when your goal is to change how Gemini Apps activity is handled for your Google Account. It is a broader account decision than removing a browser button, so check which outcome you want before changing it.
Which setting should you use?
- You only dislike the icon: right-click the toolbar icon and choose Unpin Gemini.
- You want no Gemini controls visible in Chrome: disable the relevant Show Gemini options under AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Preferences.
- You want Gemini available but not to receive tabs automatically: turn off Share current tab by default under Permissions.
- You want to alter account activity handling: review Gemini Apps Activity separately; it is not a Chrome-interface switch.
- You want occasional access after hiding the controls: use gemini.google.com, or keep Chrome’s
@geminishortcut enabled.
Why the Gemini in Chrome menu may be missing
Google says Gemini in Chrome is rolling out over time, so it may not be available in every country or territory yet. The feature can also be unavailable because an organization administrator has disabled access. In either case, the missing menu is not evidence that another universal switch is hidden elsewhere.
Use this checklist when the setting is not shown:
- Confirm that you are using desktop Chrome; the documented menu path is for desktop, not every mobile version.
- Check the full settings sidebar under AI innovations rather than relying on a toolbar icon.
- Consider whether the feature has reached your country or account as part of Google’s rollout.
- If Chrome is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether Gemini access is restricted.
- Recognize that labels and availability can change as Chrome updates; a different label or absent option may reflect a newer rollout state.
Google does not provide a universal workaround for an account, country, or organization in which Gemini in Chrome is unavailable. You can still try the Gemini web app if your account and region permit it.

What happens after you hide or unpin Gemini?
Your web access is separate
Removing the Chrome presentation does not remove the Gemini website from your account. Opening the web app directly remains the simplest fallback when you want Gemini occasionally rather than as a persistent browser control.
Your account activity setting is unchanged
Chrome’s visibility preferences do not automatically turn Gemini Apps Activity on or off. If activity handling matters to you, inspect that account setting independently instead of assuming the browser change covered it.
Your tab-sharing preference is independent
Hiding Gemini and disabling automatic tab sharing solve different problems. A hidden interface does not imply that the sharing default changed, and changing the sharing default does not hide the interface.
How to restore Gemini later
You can reverse the interface changes from the same Chrome settings area:

- Open More > Settings.
- Go to AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, turn the desired Show Gemini option back on.
- If you only unpinned the toolbar icon, use Chrome’s available toolbar customization or the Gemini control to pin it again when offered.
Re-enabling a display option restores the Chrome presentation; it does not by itself alter Gemini Apps Activity or the tab-sharing permission.
Practical privacy check before using Gemini
If your concern is what Gemini can see rather than where its icon appears, review the sharing default before starting a chat. With Share current tab by default disabled, a new chat will not automatically receive the tab simply because you opened Gemini. You still need to make deliberate sharing choices when a task requires page context.
That permission check complements, but does not replace, the account-level review of Gemini Apps Activity. Treat interface visibility, tab context, and activity retention as three separate decisions.
Desktop and mobile scope
The documented instructions apply to desktop Chrome. Do not assume that the same AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome path exists on every Android, iPhone, or iPad release. Mobile Chrome may use different controls, and Gemini in Chrome availability can vary by operating system, country, account, and rollout stage.
If you need Gemini on a phone or tablet after hiding it on a computer, use the Gemini service through the access methods available for that device and account rather than expecting the desktop preferences to transfer.
